Can't make out the general feeling from the conference - seems like all the Tories loved it but everyone else thought it was flat. I did find it mad she said the "anti-coalition" against growth, which is pretty much half of their middle-class voters who are against any housing development on green belt land. This whole "tough woman of steel" act just seems crazy - I think if she tanks the pound again she will get battered. Her and her whole team just seem compltely absorbed from real life. Strip workers of all their rights, expect everyone to work harder for less and still expect their vote? The Cabinet and strategists are honestly bonkers.

Generally think we are a few weeks away from the backbenchers making their move against her. At this point I'm inclined to think there will be a GE next year, don't think the tactic of "blame Russia" will work much unless they backtrack and tax energy companies (which Truss obvs won't as it's against "growth").

I can see the backbench/ Sunak supporters/ those who have some backbone (like the smallest inch of one) will block things from going through parliament.

If everything is then in a state of paralysis (bit like Brexit with May) then yeah I can see Truss calling an election.

I hope she does... Tory wipeout incoming

I don't think Truss will call an election unless she is forced in to a position where she has to call an election or faces being removed via a coup. But I think we are some way off of that.

Biggest one for me is if they commit to inflation rises with benefits. In the end, I think Truss will cave to pressure. Be interesting to see the latest set of polls after the Tories have had the media focus all week, but she is completely blindsided picking a fight with just about everyone.

Talk now about blackouts over winter.

The eagle-eyed among us will recall we were threatened with blackouts, devauation of the pound, tax rises & cuts to public services if we voted for Jeremy Corbyn.

The media of course will totally ignore this. <_<

The Tories tried blaming the economy crash on Putin on Question Time tonight, can't believe the stuff they are coming out with. They are seriously pooped.
And Truss is saying that she is ruling out any kind of guidance about using less energy because we're not a (picking item from Thatcherite, ultra right wing bingo) "We're not a nanny state" - erm, but there is such a thing as collective responsibility not that this horrific excuse for a human being would know anything about that. Seriously, if we have a shortage of energy (and I won't even talk about the mismanagement by the Tory governments that would have caused this) then it is a no brainer that we should tell people and businesses to waste energy frivolously compared to vital life saving purposes.

Because her mates at the energy companies can get the money still for people over using energy and then if/when blackouts happen we can all "blame Putin". I can see her game already.

She is completely toast. I think even the people giving her the benefit of the doubt will turn on her in a few months.

Looks like it could be another U Turn. I mean there is so much wastage going on which is terrible for the environment (in the not so long term) but if shortages now it is criminal not to advise people. It might piss off a few GB News gammons but you can't underestimate ignorance of some of the public in these matters.

Blackouts will kill the UK. I don’t just mean the literal number of people who will actually die I also mean the UK as a country. That will be it dead. There will be no coming back. England simply does not pull its weight in electric generation and we all suffer as a result.

Truss took aim at Scotland this week for not building nuclear power and how Scotland is suffering an energy crisis… Scotland is a net exporter of energy to England. Scotland has 18GW in construction/planning/licensed of wind power alone. A 1GW nuclear power plant is nothing. Especially as in the time it would take to construct, Scotland could build out 20+ times the capacity in renewables.

There is an Energy Crisis in the UK, but it’s England that is the problem. England does not produce enough electric on its own to meet its needs. It is reliant on Wales, Scotland and the European interconnection to meet its shortfall. The reason is that successive Tory administrations have refused to fund things like on and offshore wind capacity. Had they done so, the UK would be in a remarkably different place right now in terms of its electric mix and therefore what it could do to regulate the price of electric through the national grid

Connor Burns - a minister whose had rumours about for years, has been sacked as Trade Minister due to misconduct at the Tory conference. Maybe first by election under Truss Government - and expect a Labour win. 10000 majority to overturn if so - acheviable in these times, especially with tactical voting!
Frankly if there are blackouts that will be it for me with the UK and I will be looking into leaving. I moved here for a better life in the first place and things have just been going downhill for at least the last five years if not longer.

What's a 3 hour blackout anyway? Just go to bed for that time. :D Fridges and freezers will be fine in that time providing you don't keep opening them as it's colder weather. Even my tropical fish would be fine for 3 hours. Would not worry at all. They say it wouldn't be evening peak time anyway but day time.

Don't think there'll be any but hey ho wouldn't be the end of the world. We coped in the 70's and they were in the evening as I remember having candles lit. TV shut down at 10.30.

I love that you enjoyed your blackouts so much you can’t wait for them to come back.

I’m getting really tired of ‘we did it in the 70s’ being an excuse for these things. If you thought it was so great, it probably did harm you in the long run.

That is either the most obvious bit of trolling ever posted to the internet, or the most braindead statement ever posted to the internet and I can’t quite decide which it is

And the papers were SCREAMING at us not to vote for Corbyn due t9 blackouts... Now we might have them under the Tories, it's, oh, just go to bed and have a siesta?! Fawwwk me!!!

Erm where did I say I enjoyed them? I said WE COPED. If it was, say, 12 hours, then yes it would be bad but 3 hours.

I mean come on Chris, while people coped, to be having blackouts in 2022 in a war that we are not directly involved with just shows something fundementally wrong? Liz Truss was the one who signed off the gas storage facilities to be sold as well.

I can totally understand the appeal people have to Johnson and the "One Nation" Tory branch, but I honestly cannot understand why anyone who doesn't earn 6 figures supports Truss and the current influence. These people are not true Conservatives, they are literally UKIP masquerading in power with no idea how to govern because they are blinded by extremism.
