Thanks to the 53 people who participated in the first week of this (even if you just clicked null vote #dannyboy), much higher engagement than I expected, hooray!

Official results from week 1:

[ 24 ] Sub Focus and Dimension - Ready To Fly (#52)

[ 21 ] Taylor Swift - Bejeweled (#63)

[ 16 ] Taylor Swift - You're On Your Own, Kid (#65)

[ 13 ] Miguel - Sure Thing (#83)

[ 9 ] Coi Leray - Players (#68)

[ 9 ] Øneheart and reidenshi - snowfall (#71)

[ 8 ] Jengi - Bel Mercy (#93)

[ 5 ] Metro Boomin and Future - Too Many Nights (feat. Don Toliver) (#88)

[ 4 ] INTERWORLD - METAMORPHOSIS (#77)

[ 2 ] Libianca - People (#92)

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2023 week 1 and auto-qualifying for the January monthly round is Sub Focus and Dimension - Ready To Fly.

I was kind of expecting one of the Taylor tracks to win here - and indeed she got 2nd and 3rd both with healthy vote totals so imagine both songs have a good chance of still making it to the January vote too - but instead it's a win for this track combining drum n bass with hardcore/rave which is poised to potentially give English DJ Sub Focus his first top 40 hit for over 9 years (since 2013's #10 hit 'Turn Back Time'), as well as a first top 40 ever for fellow English DJ Dimension, the pair having previously charted together with 2019 #51 hit 'Desire'.

Miguel's belatedly charting TikTok hit also cracks double figure votes in fourth place, with Coi Leray and Øneheart/reidenshi just behind.

Weekly winners to date:

01 // 12/01/23 // Sub Focus and Dimension - Ready To Fly

A shorter list of 6 songs to choose between this week - and let's be real only 2 or 3 at a push are likely to be big vote magnets here  - totalling a bit over 18 minutes, with Popcaan giving us the first new hit of the year that's over 4 minutes long. Here's the link to the Spotify playlist again (it's the same as last week's so it'll be updated if you already saved it to your library).

Once again please vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

I've decided I am going to move to posting these threads on Saturday instead so this poll will only be open for about 5 days and a bit but that should still be plenty. x

Rumble is outstanding whilst Traumatised & Blame Brexit are also good. Cardboard box is not great, i really wish Not My Job had taken off that was a fantastic track. We Caa Done & Ditto are ok.

ranked:

#1 NewJeans - Ditto << i'm guessing no one except me will see the appeal of this but a WONDERFUL track, the soft and melancholic production really shines on here

#2 Skrillex x Fred Again x Flowdan - Rumble << a dark and grimy banger, apparently too much for Buzzjack's chart forum to handle (a song like Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites would probably be enough to make them faint), liking Flowdan's deadpan vocal and even the pitch shifted bits are cool

#3 FLO - Cardboard Box << nice r&b tune with a sticky chorus, Not My Job is even better so hopefully they can bring out more stuff of this quality

#4 Potter Payper - Blame Brexit << clickbait i say!!! anyway this aint doing it for me, beat kinda sucks tbh

#5 Popcaan x Drake - We Caa Done << stop with the accent please

#6 Clavish - Traumatised << zzzzz

I wasn't that impressed with Rumble at first, but having just played it on a soundbar it really lives up to its title.

FLO's song is fine, but not the best of theirs I've heard. I thought it best to vote for just one of those two songs to split them as I assumed they would be out in front of the rest - not the case as it stands...

Listened to Rumble twice last week and it's horrific, no desire to listen to that again.

Of the other 5 I voted Ditto and Cardboard Box, which are both decent enough, though Cardboard Box not really my thing to choose to listen to. Popcaan the least offensive of the others.

1 'Rumble' - amazed that a song that sounds like this is a top 20 hit but I love it, great throwback to the early days of dubstep plus jungle and (actual) grime flavours and the pitch shifted hook is pretty sticky too. Flowdan's main hook reminds me a bit of the gimmick from 'Who Want Smoke??' by Nardo Wick which was also a banger. Fave new hit of the year so far so guess I'm being a mainstream hoe as it's the only one that's debuted top 40 lmao 9.5/10

2 'Ditto' - now this was a lovely surprise!! I tend to find most mainstream K-Pop very samey and just not very interesting, often very dated as well, but this actually has quite a unique and refreshing sound to it, I was thinking it's almost jungle-y in the production as well although I see Wikipedia categorises it as Baltimore club, a low-key banger in any case and definitely intrigued to see what's to come from them, very happy they are the next K-Pop group to make a breakthrough and I already see them being a lot more interesting than BTS and BLACKPINK 8.5/10

3 'Traumatised' - and this was a pleasant surprise too, I haven't cared at all for Clavish's previous hits as I tend to find his voice a bit jarring and he just has boring content over uninspiring instrumentals but the string-infused beat on this one actually kinda slaps and I'm enjoying his delivery more than usual too. I had read elsewhere that he namedrops Tory Lanez in this song so I expected to cringe at that but it wasn't that bad, at least it was kind of dissing him if for the wrong reasons lol 8/10

4 'Cardboard Box' - I'm happy FLO have finally charted but this is like my 2nd least favourite song they've put out so far oops! I do like the verses and they kill it vocally but the chorus feels a little bit too juvenile and cheesy for me to want to return to it. 'Immature' or 'Not My Job' deserved. Still overall quite good tho 7/10

5 'We Caa Done' - has grown on me a bit but hard to get over how inauthentic sounding the Drake hook is, the first half of it sounds kinda cool but then when he descends into just repeating the title over and over it gets a bit tedious. Popcaan's parts are good. Might have been more into this with a stronger hook and less Drake 6.5/10

6 'Blame Brexit' - worst of the week but still not bad, I appreciate Potter as a strong lyrical-focused rapper but most of his songs struggle to break out of 'appreciation' and into me actually wanting to revisit them, this is no exception. I don't care enough about his lyricism to overlook a pretty boring instrumental and lack of hook. Lol at the clickbait title though 6/10

Voted for the top 3 (just a coincidence that I've voted for exactly half the songs both weeks so far). These results so far are definitely a bit of a surprise so interested to see if they hold up!

1. Popcaan - We Caa Done (feat. Drake) (#61)

2. Skrillex, Fred again.. and Flowdan - Rumble (#19)

3. FLO - Cardboard Box (#76)

4. Clavish - Traumatised (#63)

5. NewJeans - Ditto (#95)

6. Potter Payper - Blame Brexit (#75)

Voting for my top 3: Popcaan, Skrillex, FLO. I actually like all 6 this week to varying degrees. Clavish was very close to the top 3 but narrowly missed out, mainly because I am a lot more familiar with FLO's (even if it is far from their best).

Rumble was the only one I was inclined to vote for this week.

Does Traumatised sample Thong Song?! LOL

I voted Rumble and Ditto, the latter is such a PinkPantheress copycat tho.

Also, shout out to Turn Back Time. The only Sub Focus top 40 hit to climb to its peak!

Yesss at Ready To Fly winning the first one! Voted for Ditto this week

  1. Excellent (9/10)
  2. Ditto

    Very Good (8/10)

  3. Rumble
  4. We Caa Done
  5. Cardboard Box
  6. Blame Brexit

    Solid (high 7)

  7. Traumatised (very close to making an 8, if it wasn’t for a few questionable lines)

Oh, and here's last week's entries ranked too

  1. GOLDEN
  2. Ready To Fly

    Excellent

  3. Too Many Nights

    Very Good

  5. Bejeweled
  6. Players
  7. Sure Thing
  8. You’re On Your Own Kid

2nd and 3rd tied at the moment!

Will get the next round of this up tomorrow evening probably around this time so still time for more votes here! Not much doubt about the winner next week methinks x

Finally remembered to do this! I only voted for FLO and Skrillex but NewJeans/Clavish were decent too.

1. FLO - Cardboard Box

2. Skrillex, Fred again.. and Flowdan - Rumble

3. NewJeans - Ditto

4. Clavish - Traumatised

5. Popcaan - We Caa Done (feat. Drake)

6. Potter Payper - Blame Brexit

I missed last week but You're On Your Own, Kid would've been an easy 1st place for me, shame to see it only coming 3rd.
