To explain my thinking a little bit: Radio doesn't create hits any more and they know it so they need to cater their audience the best they can. There are researches and surveys to find out what the people like and what they don't. Usually it's about certain sounds or genres that listeners tend to react hostile towards to, not specific artists.

It would have been 100% BAFFLING decision if they had playlisted Gaga's Hold My Hand for instance. That song sounds nothing like what radio 1 plays usually. And it's completely fine, people got to know it from other stations, streaming services etc etc.

Now, it gets trickier when it comes to aging popstar that actually releases music that the target audience might react positively towards to, OR when something old is suddenly so big that it cannot be avoided (like Running Up that Hill last year). I think they COULD playlist Padam Padam, but they probably consider it as a one-off by her so they won't.

All in all, it has nothing to do with the quality of the song, it's about the idea of how the listeners react when they hear it.

EDIT: I also think that if PP breaks through big time globally, they could start playing it more, but it needs more than #6 on midweeks... potentially a Hot 100 debut or sth.

EDIT #2: It might hurt Kylie that she's on BMG and not on big label, but I'm not an expert there.

As I haven't taken notice of the charts for about 15 years, after listening nearly every Sunday for 17 years before, did radio 1 playlist Kate Bush and did they play it on the first look?

But it's only #3 on the real most important streaming service Deezer so that's all that really matters

I have tweeted them huns and have let them know I am from here. I have also included my MP on the tweet as this is wrong. Kylie is being discriminated against due to her age and gender.

I have gone to the papers about this as well huns. Enough is enough.

Please retweet my tweets so radio1 listens.

I understand not playlisting Kylie or Madonna if they wanna cater for a younger audience, this I get

but the chart update, should reflect newbies and climbers and should have nothing to do with what the station caters

I don’t think anyone is asking Radio 1 to playlist Padam Padam (though given it’s current success, the audience would surely not object to that) just simply asking for it to get played at significant times-so anything chart related where it’s had a big climb. It’s odd but not unheard of for Radio 1 to completely ignore a track that they didn’t seem worthy. Anyone remember Moves Like Jagger? They funnily then playlisted everything Maroon 5 did for at least half a decade after refusing to play that.

I reckon they may playlist Kylie again one day-but only if this continues smashing and Ed Sheeran decides to monopolise and collaborate with her.

But still it’d be nice for people to stop calling posters ‘a mess’ just for being upset about something. I keep bringing up the poor attitudes in this part of the forum and being promptly ignored so I guess I’m not sure why I’m mentioning it again.

Anyone, I’ve hopped over to Radio 2 and don’t regret it.

Central Cee getting an actual number one. Such a grim notion.

Thought you actually said "Such a grim NATION" 😁😁😁

I must be missing something here, but I don't really think Radio 1 (or radio in general for that matter) is important enough to make an impact on the charts. I consider myself a Kylie fan but there's something I don't quite get and it's the fact that so many people here act like Padam Padam not being playlisted by R1 is the end of the world, when -spoiler alert- it isn't.

Exactly if they don't want to playlist it fine, but ignore a high climber is wrong.

I am from an age that remembers radio not playing popular songs in the very late 80s early 90s, playing a SAW song or anything that wasn't "cool" and then in the mid 90s radio 1 not wanting to play anything that wasn't popular with Jo Wiley or Pete Lamacq. I even remember when Jo Whiley was covering the top 40 one Sunday and mocked any song that was "pop" and not her cool "Britpop or indie" song.

So radio 1 isn't doing anything new not playlisting but it is doing something new deliberately missing out a song for whatever reason they come up with on a chart countdown even if it is only First Look, the Sunday evening 6-7pm is traditional time people listened to the channel.

I couldn’t care less if they playlisted PP or not, as has been mentioned it holds far less significance than it did previously.

I just think a chart show should at least play climbers, new entries and non-movers.

They haven't supported Lady Gaga in years  not since Rain on Me if I recall

These artists don't NEED any airplay from R1. R1 is important for emerging artists, not big established superstars.

It'd be nice if they playlisted artists like Gaga, Kylie or Madonna, but it's not that important.

Hasn’t she had like one single since then?

Well said hun! I agree with everything you said there.

Well I started by just wanting radio 1 to play kylie on the first look chart but after this diss, I habe set my sites one step higher. Now I know it will make little difference if they playlist Kylie hun but now I feel they should because of their agism ways. It is very sad to see.

Either would be applicable!
