I do think it can leave a sour taste in the mouth if the musician you love has certain views.

So if Kylie Minogue said in an interview: Oh Brexit I thought it was a great idea and I think UK government is right to stop migrant boats, Padam Padam would fall down the charts like a stone and never be heard of again but if she said the opposite suddenly she would be the darling of left wing views and be sent to the top of the charts for having such an empowering and sensible view?

Says more about the general public if you like or dislike an artist because of their views.

I don't imagine Coldplay, U2 etc would still be around if their political views were the opposite.

So I listened to “Sprinter” last night.

Baffled as to why it is in the music charts at all.

Could it become the “worst” number 1 since “Mr. Blobby” ?

We've seen cases of artists having "extreme" political views and it seems to have basically no effect on their chart success. Kanye West and Nicki Minaj are recent examples who seem to have not been effected at all (Nicki arguably is a bit more successful than before).

There were another two artists last year who had a big hit and even got playlisted by Radio 1, and they are VERY deep into conspiracy theories, to the point of doing entire albums and documentaries about them.

That's quite the claim.

It was Dave himself last year with Starlight.

Wow! Dave really doing it for Rap. Love to see it.

are you referring to (i think it was just one of) the featured artists on Balling remix there? because I recall radio 1 actually played only the original version not the one with the rappers on it

I am unsure the rules on if we are allowed to post updates (strange if we aren't on a chart predictions thread) but Padam is back up to 10 today.

 For me it’s only the worst since Lewis. And Lewis was the worst since previous Lewis.

It’s a mistake to think the British public is left wing in the first place, let alone that an artist with particular politics wouldn’t be successful.

oh nice to see Kylie back in the top 10

agree for me the Lewis singles, especially Pointless, are some of the worst number #1s in recent times

the Dave song I heard it once and thought it was the typical Dave song I dont get the appeal but mostly cos I'm not into that kind of music/lyrics

Yeah. I guess you're thinking of Mr. Traumatik, but Devilman who's also on the song seems to believe in the same kind of things as well.

To be honest I just assumed Radio 1 were playing the remix (that's what the Spotify algorithm kept feeding me so I thought it was the main version). I was so shocked when I saw it in the charts and on the Radio 1 playlist, but I was scared to talk about it on here because I assumed Radio 1 just didn't research into them and I hated the thought of being the one to expose it and then maybe someone else here reporting them to the station and getting them removed. Maybe Radio 1 already knew after all if they never played the remix.

its fine to post during the week, the rule is no spoilers for the sunday first look or the friday official chart ahead of radio 1 broadcasting the chart positions

Weird question about Right Said Fred. They last had a top 40 hit 30 years ago and is considered a novelty group. Of course they aren't charting.

Either way... good to see Kylie back at 10! Any news on Louise? I wonder if those digital downloads exclusives has helped her hold up somewhat.

Worst since LadBaby I think is a fair claim.

Best since Starlight I think is a fair claim.

Thank you!

I agree they can pick and chose what they play on their playlists, I think if they want to run the official chart countdown they shouldn’t skip a climber or non-mover (or in Cliff’s case a #1) because it doesn’t fit their demographic or target audience.

Give the chart countdown to someone else if their are songs they feel are not a fit to their station.

Yeh I agree just to clarify they SHOULD play it on the chart as it’s based on the GPs consumption

Repeating what so many others have said but Yes, if Radio 1 are going to be home to the Official Charts, they should play all the new entries and climbers and (arguably) everything in the Top 10 (giving for clean edits of certain songs).

Play what you want for the rest of the time, but for those 2 hours play what the public are dictating through the charts.

I remember back in the 90s when they played every song in the Top 40, pretty much so no matter what. So if Daniel O'Donnell made the charts (which he did several times) then Radio 1 played him - even if they did make snide comments afterwards.

I just don't get what R1 do at the moment when Flowers is played on First Look going down in the lower quarter of the charts on it's 21st week, but Kylie is skipped going up in the top half on it's third week.

There are countless other examples which happen every week on the Friday chart show.

Louise’s greatest hits doesn’t show up as an album on her Spotify page so I kind of assumed it wasn’t out yet, that’s odd. Her “latest release” on there is the High Hopes single.

You have to go to compilations for a version of the album to show up, but that version doesn't include some of the singles. It's something to do with the rights apparently.
