So there are 4 x 7in vinyl, a 12in vinyl and cassette.

I know the label won’t care so much about chasing chart positions and would much rather flog £18 vinyl singles but only 3 out of the 5 variants will be count towards the charts right? So we could get split sales/chart positions.

Released at 2pm on Thursday.

So what happens to the 10 hours of streams? Are they lost forever?

Yes I would believe so as they don't count and they have no average from the week to use, what a shame!

BiB: correct. For the physical release, only 3 variants will be chart eligible. As mentioned above, there's also a CD single release so that means there are 7 variants of which only 3 are chart eligible.

It’s actually 100% better than I was expecting - I’m actually a bit pissed that they’ve gone with a Thursday release, I’m sure there have been a massive amount of curiosity streams today that have been lost for chart purposes.

Are they chart ineligible or will the other formats just count towards another chart entry? Like Oasis' 'Some Might Say' appearing at #71 due to a fourth format, whilst also appearing at #2, back in 1995.

They are chart ineligible. The rules were changed after Oasis and later Blur ('Country House'), occupied two chart places with the same record in 1995. The chart rules state:

A maximum of three physical formats for each title is eligible for the singles chart. The first 3 formats to be domestically released will feature in the Chart unless the record company elects a different combination before release. 4th and subsequent physical formats of a single will not be eligible for a chart position.

Amazing that they only allow 3 formats for singles but let artists have as many as they like for albums. Why?

The format rules for singles were introduced to reduce pressure on labels to have to fill multiple formats of singles with extra tracks, at cost to record labels when singles were largely loss leaders. Some labels also complained that other labels and acts had an advantage in being able to release multiple formats of singles as they could afford it. This unfair advantage was believed to be reflected in higher chart positions as fans bought all formats of a release. These rules were drawn up in the physical sales age but have continued to this day.

The albums market wasn't seen to have problems in quite the same way though chart rules did at one time restrict how albums could have sales combined. Live versions of albums, remix album and deluxe versions all had times when sales couldn't be combined with the original (live albums continue to have this restriction). But multiple formats of the same basic album were allowed because at one time they would normally be sold at full price and not discounted in week one as singles were. The problems that existed with singles could be said to now apply to albums but given how poor physical album sales are I doubt the OCC would seek to have restrictions imposed on how many formats could be released.

If streams for Thursdays are not counted, how does a week of streams calculate then? Do they take the Friday to Wednesday stream total and divide by 6 and multiply by 7 to get a de facto 7 day average? Why doesn't the chart incorporate Thursday streams into the following week's chart instead for more accurate reflection of the consumption?
It's crazy that the industry has just accepted it for years that Thursday streams are not counted. Imagine if Now and Then had been streamed enough times yesterday alone to go to No.1 (appreciate they'd have needed an opening day tally of 4 million ) and it was just...not even top 100. Maybe only then - with The Beatles being denied a No.1 with their final single - would this practice be publicly called into question.

As per the pinned FAQ thread, it's not based on a simple average, it's calculated with a machine learning algorithm.

Putting them into next week’s chart would be wrong though as the charts are very specifically meant to reflect the week in question. (I know estimating them and ditching the Thursday streams is wrong too in a different way but I can see why they don’t move them to the following week.)

I think publishing the charts on Saturday would be better, but I’m sure they’ve considered that and decided against it for whatever reason.

It isn’t really public knowledge though is it? I’m sure people in the industry know it like we know it, but I don’t think there’s an official document anywhere confirming that they aren’t counted. I was thrown out of a Stop Ladbaby Facebook group last Christmas and called a saboteur for saying people were wasting their time streaming on the Thursday and should download instead LMAO. But it occurred to me that there wasn’t even an official source I could use to back up what I knew.
