The fact that Wham have overtaken Mariah on Spotify today instead of late November/early December suggests to me that more people are in fact actively listening to Christmas music as opposed to just listening to playlists. When its passive playlist listening, Mariah gets more streams as she’s #1 on every playlist, and when this switches to active streaming Wham overtakes as its more popular

 

Nope, it's only "more popular" due to rhe O.C.C actively sabotaging Mariah and attacking her for success. They did NOT do this ro rhe malw band. That song was deeply unpopular before rhe O.C.C went lal on it following GM's death.

Not sure I follow your logic - usually Wham! have overtaken when streams are higher and there is therefore likely to be more passive listening, and we've often seen Mariah overtake Wham! again on the way down after Christmas.

 

Playlists and what gets played the most are quite a chicken / egg situation, as playlisters will move songs up if they think they will be more popular. I don't think either song has a monopoly on track #1 in Christmas playlists, but both are probably within the first few songs more often than not.

At this stage I would just like any Christmas song to do better than those 2 , I don't hate either just those 2 get over played

Would make sense to defer some physicals of Now And Then to next week if they can so it doesn’t plummet. Beginning to think if they’d played a blinder with the strategy - released on a Friday and held quite a lot of the physicals back, they may have contended for 2 weeks at #1.

Atp, is it looking like Dua has it next week?? Esp. if the song hits *hard like it's vibing it will from the brief snippets. Beatles song feels like 1 week thing. It's not at all bad but obv. its mostly frontloaded. More about who else is releasing that may be a threat?

Dua going in at #1 seems very likely at this point. Beatles won't be a challenger in week 2, the main thing is whether she'll have enough momentum to prevent 'Prada' climbing to #1 by default. Which I think she will.

Happy to see more Vinyls in stock for The Beatles! I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up with the biggest vinyl week for a single for a while. Do we know the biggest vinyl sales weeks on the singles chart?

Think people are underestimating PP/CC. I'm not convinced it'll definitely go #1 but I do think it's in with a shot. CC's last single was a 10-week (or 12-week without ACR) #1 after all, and while it was of course a collab with another very popular artist there's no denying that CC had a big impact on its popularity as well.

Very unlikely The Beatles would be a challenger in week 2. I think the odds are most favourable to Dua debuting at the top, especially with physicals involved. If she were to some degree wind up relying on those physicals and/or hype, we could even squeeze out another tight battle for the top the week after before the charts become a write off for a month.

If Dua is a big hit it’s likely she will stay until mid December despite the Xmas songs unless they are even bigger than normal (which they generally have been so far)!
