James Arthur probably a lot stronger on streaming than those two so I can see him getting the #1 by the end of the week. I generally like him and didn’t even know until right now that he just released an album so his numbers probably more likely to grow but very close three way race

The Smile are currently higher on Apple Music than James.

I think it'll be The Reytons though.

oh was expecting far more from The Smile, 15K minimum, Reytons will catch up for sure

sure the Reytons are gonna be the only ones campaigning :(

Kinda low sales sales for Tom Odell too :/

I don't think the sales are low for Tom at all. His last album, Best Day of My Life, finished the week on 6,882. No midweek sales for it but on Wednesday it was #7, and the #5 had sold 5,951 so obviously it was on less than that. The figure for #5 there is only marginally more than what Black Friday is currently on. He's doing great, especially without many physical formats (only two CDs, one of which is a deluxe "lyric & notebook" edition, and two vinyls), clearly receiving a little bump from the title track being a bigger hit than anything he's put out in a long time.
Interesting seeing how close the top 3 are! The Reytons' last album sold 12,252 copies across 32 different formats - I fancy the number 1 will need a bit more than that this week, especially if James capitalises and releases some new versions. There's currently only 5 versions I can see on his website (2 CDs, 2 Vinyls, and a deluxe download).

I kinda thought he would do slightly better with the hit single on this album and AL doing well again.

Both were TikTok hits though, and those often don't have much impact on artists' careers beyond that.

Totally agree - why is anyone bringing up Kylie? It's irrelevant - no records have been broken (Kylie only has 35 top 10s). Hopefully Madonna is about to get her 64 th Top 10 single, which is amazing.

Kylie was brought up because it was extremely impressive & above all expectations that she managed a Top 10 single as the sole artist. It wasn’t about breaking records? Before that happened, people assumed that she’d be lucky to ever go Top 40 again. A similar situation to Madonna, who hasn’t had a Top 40 single under her own steam since 2015.

Popular potentially going Top 10… personally I’ll be pleased that Madonna will be in the Top 10 again at long last. It’s just a very different situation to Kylie. The odds of Madonna getting a Top 10 by being a featured artist on a song by The Weeknd, the #1 streamed artist worldwide, was always more favourable.

Kylie did well to get on top 10 with that track. But we’re NOT talking about her. She’s not up for a top 10 this week…. I just don’t get the idea of trying to bring Kylie up.

Popular is the bigger hit, Padam Padam is Kylie’s achievement alone, it all balances out imo and the comparisons are unnecessary. I’m just very happy both of them are getting top 10s in the 2020s

Fair! I wouldn't have brought Kylie up myself in this thread, but I agreed with what was said regarding lead artist/feature artist and how it feels different (I also felt the same about Shania in regards to the success of Anne-Marie - Unhealthy - didn't exactly feel like it was down to Shania). Nevertheless I'll be happy if Popular goes Top 10, and it looks like it has a really good chance of holding on too!

Yeah, the difference between lead artist and featured artist is basically the point I was trying to get across, so I don't see why Kylie isn't a valid comparison. If Kylie had achieved a top 10 single by singing a verse on a Weeknd song, it wouldn't have been nearly as impressive as achieving a top 10 as lead artist. That's all I was trying to say! (Suddenly I really want to hear a Weeknd/Kylie collab )

Obviously Kylie's achievement of a solo top 10 is on another level as having a top 10 as feature

it's the same as Jess Glynne and her number 1s, half of which are features

but Madonna's achievement is also important, don't think it should be underrated, for someone who peaked in the 80s with 22 top 10 hits to still go top 10 in 2024 at age 65, even as feature, people have to be willing to collaborate with you

James Arthur added 5k sales and is #1

But now another contender has raced ahead for the top spot on the Official Albums Chart - James Arthur has pulled off a stunning coup throughout the night, leapfrogging both The Smile and The Reytons to become the act to beat for Number 1 on Friday with this fifth studio album, Bitter Sweet Love.

Adding over 5,000 units overnight - mostly comprised of physical sales of the album - James now has a clear lead over yesterday's leaders; nearly 4,000 chart units now separate him from his nearest competition, The Smile.

Yeah it's a shame it won't get to 10k but should beat the last albums week 1 total. Interested to see how many of this weeks entries do for the end of the week as many of them could go straight out of the top 100 next week.....

I think it's a pity, Tom Odell did the unthinkable and managed to get a 2nd tiktok hit

but still those tiktokers don't care or bother for the album

he's also got great traditional promo (ie Graham Norton last week) so I'm disappointed he cannot do 10K

I thought there was quite a bit of buzz unlike last time

The Reytons have signings today and tomorrow, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can catch up. I suspect James will stay at #1 though.

They have their pop up store too so think that’ll give them a boost.

where did those James Arthur 5K came from out of the blue? sure fake cassettes? :D

Considering The Reytons have 16 different formats on their website, I don't think they could really point fingers
