Biography

Jimin had spent only six months as a K-pop trainee when he debuted in BTS—the least amount of any of the band’s members. With his natural charisma and strong background in contemporary dance, Jimin was considered a shoo-in for the group, but it would be years before he would get comfortable with his vocals. After more than a decade with BTS, though, Jimin would become one of the most distinctive voices in K-pop. Born in Korea’s southern city of Busan as 박지민 (or Park Jimin) in 1995, Jimin moved to Seoul at 16 to become a trainee at Big Hit Entertainment. In 2013, he debuted alongside RM, JIN, SUGA, j-hope, V, and Jung Kook as a dancer and vocalist in 방탄소년단 (or Bangtan Sonyeondan, aka BTS). They would go on to become one of the most successful musical artists of all time. In 2016, when BTS made international waves with the single “Blood Sweat & Tears,” it was Jimin’s raspy, sensual intro that lured in many new listeners. He further cemented his reputation as a uniquely expressive performer with the release of BTS solo songs “Lie” (2016), “Serendipity” (2017), and “Filter” (2020). In 2023, during a BTS group hiatus, Jimin collaborated with Taeyang, of BIGBANG, on the R&B track “VIBE” and released a solo mini-album called FACE. A six-track record written over a period of 10 months about Jimin’s intense feelings during the initial pandemic period, FACE hit at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, with synth-pop lead single “Like Crazy” debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Co-written by Jimin, the album is about confronting one’s self in order to become a better artist. “Finally free,” he sings again and again on “Set Me Free, Pt. 2,” a self-liberation song that features Jimin rapping—a reminder that finding one’s voice is not only a continuous, lifelong process for an artist, but one that can lead in unexpected directions. - Apple Music

Biography

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” Though he didn’t release a new album in 2021, he was a constant part of the cultural conversation, releasing a slew of singles, performing at the Super Bowl and on Saturday Night Live (think: “Ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd”) and winning the Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year. Though he didn’t release a new album in 2021, he was a constant part of the cultural conversation, dropping a slew of singles, performing at the Super Bowl and on Saturday Night Live (think: “Ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd”), and winning the Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year. After a banner 2021, he unleashed 2022’s Dawn FM, a cross-decade synth-pop exhibition for the ages. Featuring flourishes of new wave (“Gasoline”), astral rock (“Here We Go... Again”), and other genres in between, the album tightropes the retro and the modern—a singular vision curated by a singular artist. - Apple Music

Chappell might give her a run for her money? Plus we have a number of big album releases this year I believe - so plenty of other artists may be able to contest (The Weeknd releasing end of Jan in particular).

The only time Chappell has been above her is this week and that's because she completely went all out to take it. I mean it's possible for sure but Short n Sweet is just holding on too well I think. Plus I think if either are releasing a deluxe this year, it's Short N Sweet. Weeknd could definitely take it though, also if Taylor releases early enough one of her TV's

Biography

Sabrina Carpenter has made the transition from teen-TV star to pop-dominating force look remarkably easy. It helps that the actor and singer-songwriter—born in 1999 in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania—pursued both sides of her career in tandem, releasing music while establishing a regular presence on the Disney Channel and through other acting gigs, including on Broadway. And on her first two albums—2015’s Eyes Wide Open and 2016’s EVOLution—Carpenter set herself apart from her teenage peers with her deft delivery and her eagerness to embrace plenty of dance music sounds. Singular Act I and Singular Act II—a two-part album that dropped in 2018 and 2019—provided yet more proof of her fast-developing abilities as a singer and songwriter who had moved past teen-star stereotypes to become a full-fledged club powerhouse. Later, Carpenter stepped back sonically to express herself more personally, as on the intimately acoustic “skinny dipping,” from her fifth album, emails i can’t send. Still, the sheer fun of it all has never waned. Just listen to one of the many ad-libbed outros in her live performances of the album’s pop hit “Nonsense,” or indeed the lyrical playfulness of “Espresso,” the flirty funk banger that became summer 2024’s defining hit—and which provided Carpenter’s official breakout moment. Next came the Jack Antonoff-produced “Please Please Please” (which became the summer’s second-biggest hit) and her sixth record Short n’ Sweet, a showcase of the most winking, witty music of Carpenter’s career so far. But if it saw the newly crowned pop princess take aim at past relationships, it also saw her take aim at herself. “A lot of what I really love about this album is the accountability,” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “I will call myself out just as much as I will call out someone else.” - Apple Music

I think Chappell has a good chance if they push another single after "Pink Pony Club" and she gets a boost from the BRITS (assume she may perform?). I think her next album isn't ready for this year apparently so might as well keep pushing her debut!

I'll be interested to see how The Weeknd does. He has 3 top 40 hits so far from it with "Timless" being a good sized hit. I think the start of the campaign has gone better than Dawn FM. Hoping he'll have a really great 4th single on the album to release as a focus track.

meh they should be supporting Chappel and play Pink Pony Club

instead they play the boring Sabrina songs x 3

really fail to see the appeal of this, the definition of boredom

Biography

Teddy Swims’ soaring, sonorous howls defy both gravity and genre. Born Jaten Dimsdale in 1992 (outside Atlanta, GA), the singer-songwriter credits his father for introducing him to Al Green, but his influences have spread far and wide ever since. Before going viral in 2019 with showstopping covers of Michael Jackson and Shania Twain, Dimsdale was tackling alt-rock, hair metal, and soul in four different bands. He had also created the alias Teddy Swims as a hip-hop project. But upon releasing his 2020 major-label debut single, “Picky,” and later his heart-baring 2023 debut album, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) (featuring the scorching hit “Lose Control”), the vocal powerhouse has used that versatility to sculpt his own soul-soaked, country-tinged, pop-conscious style—every bit of it highly emotionally charged. “I end up writing the same feeling down in as many ways and perspectives as I possibly can,” he told Apple Music—adding, with a laugh, “It’s my duty to hurt.” - Apple Music

I really like "Bad Dreams" so happy to see it getting more weeks in the top 10!

Sabrina is also rumored to perform at the BRITs, and it'll be followed up by her tour immediately. Like I said i won't rule it out entirely but I think everything Chappell has going for her in the coming year, Sabrina has plus she's ahead most weeks and she has a potential deluxe and a tour
