I discovered Colour Girl's garage take on 'Can't Get Used To Losing You' about a year ago, added it to my shuffle playlist, then it disappeared soon after and still hasn't returned - boo!

The most upsetting omission from streaming is officially “Let Your Head Go” and “This Groove” by Victoria Beckham.

I can’t believe in the big year of 2025 we are STILL waiting for this

I got Now Dance 2008 cheaply today and the massive banger that is Can't Stop Moving by Sonny J is on there, and I thought 'wow, I haven't heard this in YEARS'. Turns out it's not on Spotify of course.

What a song, it feels like they pushed it a couple of times and it had good airplay and got used on a lot of TV shows, yet never did anything beyond scraping the top 40. I don't see how its style is a million miles away from, say, Afraid To Feel by LF System, so maybe it was just pushed in the wrong era.

Can't Stop Moving is one I've been waiting to come back. I believe it used to be there as it's available internationally. The Mirwais Mix from 2008 was the best

All this makes me thankful for my iTunes library. But at the same time, I don't understand why people get so worked up about particular missing songs, when surely all you need to do is make a little bit of effort track down an MP3 or CD and add it as a local file? Apart from meaning you have to find space for the file on your phone (which you don't even need to do with Apple Music at least), or not being able to share it on a public playlist, I don't really get the big fuss. Someone explain what I'm missing?

It's available on Apple, so clearly there's still some differences between what's available on each of the streaming services!

(I always preferred Handsfree (If You Hold My Hand): that did even less chartwise, annoyingly)

Yes, I've noticed that generally if something is on iTunes then it's usually also on Apple Music, so they do have a lot of songs/radio edits Spotify don't have (the opposite is probably true too in some cases although can't think of any right now).

Mya and Blackstreet’s Take Me There. It wasn’t on Spotify, then it was for a while, now it’s gone again. Just a remix is still there but not the original.

Tons of 90s dance hits that only exist on there as the long 12” versions and not the shorter radio edits as played and found on the CDs back in the day, which was a bit annoying when making my favourite song playlist recently - as lovely as it is to hear the full ten minutes of something, two minutes either side of that is usually just an increasing/decreasing drum rhythm and I have twenty other songs I want to listen to!

Of that list, Bizarre Inc’s ‘Such a Feeling’ is only on there as a soundalike karaoke cover, which is amusing given that there’s only about two lines in the song.

From memory, both summers this was released in (2007 and 2008) were extraordinarily wet and miserable which wouldn’t have helped, as it’s such a feel good summer song. I think the second release used a Mirwais remix as the lead track on the CD, but on iTunes it was the original that was downloaded the most, at least it just snuck into top 40 that second time.

Very niche but a particular version of 'Boss Man' by Sean Paul & Lady Saw that I remember from a compilation album. In the version on spotify, their verses are exchanged in order which changes the whole flow of the song.

I think for me personally, it's nice to have them all together on streaming partly for sharing playlists with friends and family and being able to show songs you love to other people in an easy way. Also, when I upload MP3s as local files to Spotify (which I still do a lot - I use my iTunes still about the same amount as Spotify), the volume level is a lot higher - it can probably be adjusted but I'm not sure how. So if I have them shuffling on a playlist there can be volume jumps, which is annoying. It's also just aesthetically nicer within the Spotify app for me to have it properly uploaded than to have loads of local files in the playlist that come up with larger fonts and sometimes grainy artwork. My top 100 of 2001 playlist always annoys me for that reason. As No.2, 4, 6, 8 and 11 I have uploaded from local files and they come up with that bigger font size on the album name, and I can't click to search by artist on local files etc. Clearly, it's not a huge issue, just a niggle, so I'd love to see these tracks available. No.2 and 8 are just songs from free magazine CDs so are never going to get uploaded but Will I, Love You Anyway and Everybody are surprising songs not to be on streaming.

Also, I always think it's a shame that artists have songs missing that could rack up thousands or even millions of streams potentially, and they are missing out on the chance of a song becoming a sleeper retro hit. I know it's a very unlikely thing to happen, but if something is on streaming then people can include it more easily in their TikTok videos etc, and make it easier for others to add the track to their playlists etc, and there's a chance stuff could pick up mini viral steam.

When Pop Music Activism managed to get Australian Popstars' winners Bardot's back catalogue onto streaming, that was fantastic for me, as I have the debut album and a couple of their singles at home in boxes, but I have no idea where, so I was more able to easily listen to these songs again and also share that great pop album with people, and was able to listen to remixes etc I hadn't heard before from single EPs, whereas it would have cost me a lot of money to get hold of those CDs from Australia. So it's especially useful for niche releases from other territories.

Having said all that - I will never let go of my iTunes library, at least not until the program ceases to exist. At the end of every year I make a top 100 playlist of that year, and download every song on it from iTunes so that I have a hard copy. Because I've been burnt so many times before with old favourites just disappearing from streaming.

Good point on the weather, it's such a summer track. I can't remember if I ever heard the Mirwais version, it doesn't ring any bells. It feels like if not a hit at the time, it should have become a cult classic, but then it's not really ever going to get that opportunity if it's not available on streaming services.

It wouldn't be the first time I've vastly overpredicted a summer dance anthem to huge success only for it to limp into the top 40, another example being 2005's Little Love by Lil' Love!

I have that Sonny J track on CD Single. It was the era when I bought all my personal chart #1s on single, and I was convinced that it was going to be a hit with strong Radio 1 backing. A bit like Peter Bjorn And John the previous year (which did at least sneak into the Top 40 at #35). I can't remember if it was the 2007 original or the 2008 re-release but I have a feeling it was the original (when it made #80 in October 2007).

I loved them so much that I also bought the follow-ups “Enfant Terrible” (which only made #20 for me) and “Hands Free (If You Hold My Hand)” (which stalled at #2 behind Elbow's “One Day Like This” in June 2008), strangely both of those are available to stream!

Here's the sample btw:

A couple that I wish were on streaming/for sale:

Lisa Lougheed “Run With Us”

Not a hit at all, however I’m not sure if it ever got a release in the UK. I've got an mp3 rip from a 7” vinyl that someone kindly uploaded, but it'd be nice to have it available more widely to the public.. a childhood favourite for me!

Zoë “Lightning”

The only single in chart history to peak with 3 weeks at #37, that's iconic enough for it to deserve to be on streaming services. Also I need it to complete my meteorologically themed playlist.

Sunscreem “Love U More”

They've put the album version up, but I prefer the single mix with its drums & twinkly intro. Why no single mix when they've put the single mixes for “Perfect Motion” and “Please Save Me”? The latter barely made the Top 40. I had to get the original CD single from discogs so I could have the original mix.

'Love U More' is a brilliant song! I've never realised the single version isn't on Spotify.

I wish the radio mix of Damian Rice - Cannonball was on streaming.

Has just been added it seems:

One that I looked for the other day was the 00s remix of Lou Reed’s ‘Satellite of Love’.

I remember radio hammering it at the time, and me being surprised it wasn’t a bigger hit.
