I also agree that 'Take A Bow' is really dull. Retrospectively, I only appreciate it getting to the top to keep Rihanna's annual #1 streak from 'Umbrella' to 'The Monster' alive. This song was written by Ne-Yo if I remember correctly but he certainly did a better job with his own 'Closer', good tune. That really takes me back to the days of Piczo! Not sure if others remember that, but you could build your own website and it seemed to be a popular choice of background music to use on your homepage. I never had Bebo or MySpace in the 2000s but instead hung out on Piczo and MSN socially.

'Sex On Fire' has been overplayed to death and is still a juggernaut into the streaming era, but I do enjoy it musically - especially the riffs. Noughties memories include Jamie 'Afro' Archer singing it for his X Factor audition song and my dad rinsing the accompanying album in the car, inescapable.

I have two strong favourites this year (curious to see if they're the same as Chez's x) and they're both in your top 10, yay!

Uh oh! I did think a lot of people would have revealed that song already!

Maybe it’ll be next!

Yeah Take That and Katy Perry are the only ones left that I’m not really fussed about. I’d love Pink or Duffy to be top but I don’t think they will.

Enjoy both 'Closer' and 'Sex On Fire', though understandably did tire of the latter for a while. Always preferred 'Use Somebody' though.

There's 1 that would be very low down for me still to come but it's not any that have been mentioned yet as well as two others I dont care for much.

Closer is indeed a tune! I still love and it was a thoroughly deserved number 1, which would easily be in my top 10.

Sex On Fire is over rated these days, I’m over it now.

That's a decent enough top 10 on the whole. I'd definitely have Sex on Fire in there over some of them - another one here who finds Greatest Day the lest good of TT's big comeback songs (the way it's ended up a typical wedding song doesn't help either) but I'm good with the other 9

I bought both the Ne-Yo and Kings Of Leon albums that housed these singles. Closer is a great track and still rinsed by radio to this day. I liked how reliably relevant he remained for a while, scoring a No.1 single on every even numbered year from 2006-2012 (plus the Pitbull feature thrown in for good measure in 2011).

Sex On Fire I liked at the time, but Use Somebody was the reason I bought that album.

Also agreed with others on Take That, the weakest single from their 2006-2011 comeback imperial phase for me (I think I'd even rather listen to I'd Wait For Life). A song written with the intention of being anthemic but just sounding like one long intro and ironically far less anthemic than the likes of Patience, Shine, Rule The World and The Flood.

Solid top ten left though overall!

Back from hols to catch up now! Every track was better than the one before in the rundown and it was going wonderfully until Madonna turned up way too low 😄One of the records of the year for me, love it and may be my top number one or near it. Basshunter and dull Rihanna would be below Singing In The Rain for me. Sex On Fire is the best so far bar Madonna, with Ne-yo behind that KOL.

10 Coldplay Viva La Vida

#2s held off #1: None

Next up is a little known group called Coldplay!

The group had first appeared on the charts almost a decade earlier and quickly became a juggernaut on the world stage. By 2008, they'd released three massive selling number one albums and released countless hits. But somehow none of them had reached the top spot in the UK Charts. They had peaked at number two twice with 'In My Place' and 'Speed of Sound', although I think we can all agree they had bigger songs in their discography (i.e. 'Yellow' and personal faves of mine, 'Trouble', 'Fix You' and 'The Scientist').

And for this release the stars aligned. The similarly titled album had hit number one the week before and the momentum that came with that helped this song to finally give the group their debut number one. Future releases would solidify Coldplay's ability to create anthemic songs, perfectly suited to large arena audiences.

9 Katy Perry I Kissed A Girl

#2s held off #1: The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved, Eric Prydz - Pjanoo

I've always loved how subjective music is - and that extends to how you can personally like/relate to songs.

If I'd done this ranking in 2008, this song would probably have appeared near the top. I looooove a good pop song, with a catchy hook. Always have, always will. And this hit all the marks when it was released. There's a reason it spent five weeks at the top (and thankfully ended Kid Rock's reign).

Based on chart stats, it was a debut release ~ debut number one scenario. But Katy's success did not come out of nowhere. Seven years earlier, under her actual name 'Katy (short for Kathery) Hudson' released her debut album 'Katy Hudson'. I remember reading the story of this album and how it came from a singer so far removed from the singer we know today - heavily routed in Christian Pop and not a cheeky lyric in sight.

Not to be confused with the actress Kate Hudson, Katy changed her industry name to 'Katy Perry' and left her Christian routes behind. Before her debut Katy Perry album she released the EP 'Ur So Gay'. For those of you who remember that song, I'll let you make your minds up about what you think about the song now!

And then we move onto 'I Kissed A Girl'. In a way it's quite surprising that this song was so embraced by the music world. Some saw it as offensive to the LGBTQIA+ community, fetishising what it means to have a same sex kiss. Others saw it as a gateway to starting their own journey. To be honest, I am never sure what I think (and the aforementioned 'Ur So Gay' song). I kind of have to take it as something of the era - which in itself is a slight echoing of the heavily gendered culture of the 90's and early 00's.

Katy would go from strength to strength, scoring four more number one singles and countless other hits. She's recently had quite a dramatic decline from the top, but remains a constant figure in the US due to her role on the American Idol panel.

And oh dear guys, still no Take That. I must be really trolling the lot of you!

But sorry (not sorry), there's a reason I love every song still to appear!

Slight spoiler - the next song is a song I liked but didn't love upon release. Over time I've found myself appreciating it more :)

Songs still to appear in alphabetical order:

Beyonce - If I Were A Boy

Duffy - Mercy

Estelle ft Kanye West - American Boy

Girls Aloud - The Promise

Leona Lewis - Run

Pink - So What

Take That - Greatest Day

The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name
