I've noticed 'Live Forever' reasonably high in a lot of votes so I'm hoping that can do it. I'm confident it will finish high up regardless though!

I initially assumed it would be Linkin Park.

  • Or maybe Bananarama's version leans in more to people's pop tastes rather than being to do with recency? A 40 year old song isn't really that much more recent compared to a 56 year old song!

I have created a Spotify playlist in the order of Rollo's post if you want listen to everything again before voting.

I shall be awaiting a Robyn victory.

And if something else wins then I’ll be editing Rollo’s posts with the correct result.

Hi Scone,

I'm just checking each song has 43 votes and have 44 for Venus by Shocking Blue which I've traced back to your vote. You gave it 34 and 22 points. I didn't notice that at the time. One of these scores should be for Yesterday by the Beatles which doesn't appear in your vote. Can you let me know which one of these scores is for Shocking Blue and which one is for The Beatles. Thanks.

@Scone1 Further to that, I've now noticed you gave two scores for Bat Out Of Hell (31 and 19) and no score for In The End. Can you also let me know what your scores should be for those two songs. Thanks.

Ooops 22 for the beatles

Linkin Park – In the End 19

Sorry

50. The Stone Roses - Fools Gold / What The World Is Waiting For 828pts

Writers - Ian Brown, John Squire

Top scores - Jaz13music 49, DaTilt 46, Jester 44

Low scores - rio309 2, deepinside 2, JackJones 2

Average score - 19.2

This was the single that won a tie-break over Bjork's 'Hyperballad' to qualify from the first semi-final so it's not a surprise to see it finish in last place. What The World Is Waiting For was originally intended to be the A side but the record label's A&R man really liked Fools Gold. The band were not convinced so the single ended up as a double A side. Fools Gold is now obviously the better known song.

This was intended as a pastiche of punk rock and was a UK hit in 1978. Plastic Bertrand's real name is Roger Jouret. Both he and the song's writer, Lou Deprijck, have claimed to be the vocalist on its recording. Plastic Bertrand had one more top 40 hit and went on to represent Luxembourg in the 1987 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing in 21st place out of 22.

Ah one of my favourites out first. Fools Gold one of the greatest indie anthems and one of the first to adopt dance music, standing out from everything else including their own fantastic debut album, it was way ahead of its time. Psychedelic funk at its best, I think the band were possessed by the spirit of Sly Stone when they recorded it!

Ah shoot dunno how I missed this oh well as long as the crap oasis song doesnt win im not too fussed

This was the follow-up to the Arkansas band's number 1 single 'Bring Me To Life'. They went on to have two more top 10 singles, 'My Immortal' and 'Call Me When You're Sober'.

I noticed 'Ça plane pour moi' being pelted with +1 scores, so that finishing low is not a surprise, but didn't clock Stone Roses performing poorly in the final at all, aw 😪

'Fools Gold' is a classic.

Oh that's a really disappointing last placer, Fools Gold is a classic, it does a wonderful job slowly building over it's runtime and a classic riff throughout. Admittedly my vote was mainly for that rather than the other side, but you can't go wrong with debut era Stone Roses.

I like the other two as well - Going Under is another epic single from Evanescence and was a nice contrast to the stripped back My Immortal, and I hadn't seeked out Ça plane pour moi, but I recognised it instantly from being on an advert when I was younger, fun song x

🙄

Plastic Bertrand might have placed higher if it wasn't in that advert that was on so much a few years ago.

Fools' Gold has one of the best basslines.

Fools Gold finishing last is a shame, a real UK classic and way better than a certain other song in the final from a Manchester band which will likely win. Ca Plane Pour Moi is pretty funny but it can get annoying at times, I actually had it stuck in my head during a work shift recently and it drove me mad! Going Under ending up so low is also a shame, love Evanescence.

Yeah it doesn't feel right for a song as iconic and seminal as 'Fools Gold' to finish last here. Let's hope their fellow Mancunians avenge them...

'Going Under' is brilliant, certainly just as good as 'Bring Me To Life'!

Yeah but that's not part of this rate :/
