The surprising thing about Northern Star is it started out at #10! It's fair to say it's one of those albums that recovered as the campaign went on - 'I Said Never Again' bumped it up to #5 later in its run and 'I Turn To You' gave it its #4 peak.

You'll have to introduce me to this song sometime! 😋😂

EDIT - just seen the many other replies picking up of this... a bit late to the party. 😅

Oh that's crazy! Was sure Northern Star had hit the top spot - didn't realise It stalled at 4.

I guess NBTSA and ITTY were so big, I just assumed she already had a number 2 album

It really wasn't doing that well until NBTSA took it to #5 months later and then ITTY pushed it to it's #4 peak. One of those albums that really took off in 2000 but not so much in 1999. A shame she was nominated for Best Female at the 2000 Brits instead of the 2001 ones as I think she would have had a real decent chance of winning off the back of NS success. Sadly then you were not allowed to be nominated again from the same album cycle (I'm sure the rules have changed now)

Mel C so close to her first ever number 1 😭😭😭

Album... she has 2 #1 singles 😂

And actually Northern Star was #1 in Sweden plus Beautiful Intentions went to #1 (and something stupid like 6x platinum) in Portugal! 🤯

I hope Mel C gets the #1. Had a listen through the album and pleasantly surprised - a number of bops on it!

Id love it to happen but dont think it will unfortunately but i would so so so love to be wrong.

It is probably her best chance of it happening though as she never really has been in contention before with an album.

Yeah it's actually a pretty decent album. I mean she's NEVER going to top the likes of 'I Turn To You' in her career (that's an 11/10 banger) but this is actually a great effort with some pretty catchy songs and she more than deserves to have a #1 album by this point in her career so I'm rooting for her! I'm also thinking Kneecap will maybe be a little more front-loaded than her? But it's whether they can both hold off Jacko, and I'm doubtful they can.

We'll get Wednesday mids this week, right?

Hopefully Mel can surpass kneecap and make it to number 2 if not number 1, she does deserve it after all this time. Shame her streams are so low.

I know this rant is not old but the last couple of weeks have been bad for 1-Out albums

Skindred’s drop was embarrassing in my view and Melanie C’s would be just as bad

Personally I don't think it is. Unless you're a streaming artist you'll always have a hefty drop on week 2.

Look at even Taylor's drop on week 2 (60/70% drop) and she even had streaming on her side. It's really common for most acts.

Looking at last weeks album top 40 I count 12/13 albums that have charted for more than 10 weeks that are not greatest hits,

Heck it we omitted Bad and the 2 beiber albums due to extenuating circumstances thats literally 10 albums with less than 10 weeks on the chart and of them likely 3 will reach 10 weeks, (harry, noah and Raye)

Basically albums arnt built for longevity anymore so all these 1 outs or high falls are pretty normal

I guess anyone these days who's going to be interested in buying a physical album will do it in the first week, and if you're one of many artists with negligible streams there's nothing to hold you up after that. It's just the way the market has shifted.

can someone explain how come different albums of MJ charting last week and different appearing in this week mids? (Essential)

Its the way they count the streams, the GH that sells most physically and digitally gets allocated the streaming points its very complicated and confusing

Today's album numbers from PopSquare. Mel is unfortunately falling behind now:

#1 - Kneecap - 17,237
#2 - Michael Jackson - 16,881
#3 - Melanie C - 15,379

Shame it looks like KNEECAP won't be hanging on then especially as it appears to be down to the reallocation of MJ streams. Still very respectable numbers for them though!

(An MJ/KNEECAP top 2 is quite a minefield for the BBC for various reasons lmao)

I know the topic has moved on a bit but I am genuinely astonished to learn that none of the Spice Girls have managed a top 3 album before 😲

Even more impressive that all 3 members of LM have (the ones that have released albums)

Madge at 22! Lol she’ll be low top 40 come Friday. Sabrina not distracting herself with numbers. She did it ALL for love 🤪

Allegedly… but generally Number Ones sells more than The Essential (still remains to be seen this week) - for example it’s had 15 weeks in the sales chart this year compared with 1 for The Essential yet The Essential is usually the one that charts higher.

So either:

The record company is allowed to nominate one album at a time (and for one week nominated Michael - Soundtrack and earlier in the year nominated Number Ones for 1 week.)

Or:

The priority is given to the album that would chart highest if allocated the streams for its top 16 tracks.

From what I can see, everyone in this group disagrees with me on that, but I’m adamant that one of these scenarios must be the case.

Ah fair enough you could be right I was just going by Alan's write up in the sales thread

"Quote

Topping the box office chart despite a critical drubbing, Michael Jackson biopic Michael has reignited massive interest in the late ‘king of pop’, who died nearly 17 years ago. The official soundtrack set, Michael: Songs From The Motion Picture leads the way, debuting at No.4 (13,244 sales). 2003 compilation Number Ones re-enters at No.5 (9,267 sales), while 1982’s Thriller surges 65-8 (7,251 sales), and 1987’s Bad rockets 52-13 (6,302 sales).

The only Jackson album in the chart heading the wrong way is 2005 compilation The Essential, which spent six weeks at No.1 following his death in 2009, but which slides 5-14 (6,268 sales) this week. The cause of that blip is the complicated relationship between the track listings of Michael, Number Ones and The Essential, with pure sales order dictating where the streams from common tracks (both solo and Jacksons/Jackson 5 material) are directed for chart purposes. In this particular case, The Essential is the loser. For the record, with pure sales of 4,124, all of the soundtrack’s 13 tracks contributed to its streams. With 1,151 pure sales, Number Ones came next but was denied streaming points from the nine tracks the two albums share. With 388 pure sales, The Essential is the last of the three, and was not allocated streams from any tracks it shared with either of the other two"
