Friday at 20:315 days 'Club Cant Handle Me' is very poppy dance in production but the chorus is great! It's like how 'Green Light' by Roll Deep was saved by a great pop chorus. Edited Friday at 20:345 days by TheSnake
Friday at 20:425 days Time to wheel out my Grange Hill (90s version) mash-up of Flo Rida. I remember thinking for ages, 'what does this melody remind me of?' and then it came to me. Former BJ member Hitstastic helped with the mixing. It needs a remaster these days as it's 16 years old but I do think the idea holds up, especially in the middle eight rap.I do like the original, I always thought it was Nicole Scherzinger on the chorus, but must just be a soundalike.Telephone is a really good one too, loved that climb to No.1 when the video came out! I love when a superstar collab is actually good, as it doesn't always happen. Edited Friday at 20:425 days by gooddelta
Friday at 20:465 days 'Telephone' was a more musically basic direction after the creative genius of 'Bad Romance', but still good fun! The majority of my memories related to this single release are around that video, though. I was completely in awe and it was the talk of school the next day! I had quite a few Gaga loons in my friendship group and we changed our Facebook profile pictures to stills from the video I remember someone choosing the honey bun that got thrown to the ground for theirs lmao. PlentyOfFish product placement in the video screams early 2010s also! The repeated "put your hands up" in 'Club Can't Handle Me' feels very of the era. It's a decent enough song although I mostly associate it with blocking The Saturdays from #1. I wasn't too mad about 'Missing You' slipping to #3 by the end of the week as that was a pretty bland affair.

Friday at 21:095 days Author Shows I wasn't really deep in the charts even as late as August, I had forgotten completely about The Saturdays and the "'Missing You' 'nearly' got to #1" drama. Either that or it shows I didn't care about The Saturdays (sadly my last.fm records from the subsequent years has me playing them more times than I'd care to admit, so that can't be it)I checked on the background vocals for 'Club...', with Wiki as the starting point, but also cross-referencing it with other places that also mention this mysterious Carmen Key character as the vocalist (and also one of the writers!), with this song listed as a highlight in her bio (lol). But then if I check out the Nicole Scherzinger theory using similar research methods, I can find a fair few sources saying that is the case.Apple Music has Carmen Key credited on the background vocals so I suppose that's the correct answer but I'm intrigued as to how the idea of Nicole being on there was so widespread.
Friday at 21:585 days I normally don’t like Flo Rida, but Club Can’t Handle Me isn’t that bad. Shame it denied The Saturdays though.
Saturday at 00:275 days 'Telephone' at the time it was the ultimate heavyweight collaboration between Gaga and Beyonce. 'Video Phone' though that was interesting to say the least. Again I can remember the music video for 'Telephone' premiering after 9pm on 4Music.
Saturday at 11:054 days Flo-Rida as main artist had only one top 10 from me - and that was 2012's Good Feeling (I liked the Etta James bits). This one was a more-by-the-numbers 22 peak and now I play it again, it bomps along nicely, there's no massive hook to speak of, and it's well-produced, I wouldnt turn it off, but I can see why it doesnt stick in my memory much 16 years on. The song is the main issue - there's not a lot to it.
Saturday at 12:004 days Author 11. Cee Lo Green – Fuck You2 weeks at #1 (entered 10th October): 01-01-04-04-06-10-15-12-13-21-16-13-12-11-16-24-29-38-35-19-14-18-24-33-39-41-42-48-54-54-59-68-67-79-82-92-87-83-86-99-100Kept off #1: Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow – ShameEOY #12One more. One more instance in 2010 of delving into the Midas touch that The Smeezingtons had over UK charts this year as one of their number, Bruno Mars, soared to stardom. Both of his songs in this countdown have already gone, but there’s one more breezy and light pop-RnB song to come that Bruno had a big hand in writing, and that is ‘Fuck You’, bane of radio station censors and the biggest solo hit for one Cee Lo Green.Quite possibly more commonly known as ‘Forget You’, given how good for airplay this song is, this song was released in a fair few versions, the standard clean version of ‘Forget You’, the also clean version, ‘FU’, and of course the uncensored version because we don’t have the watershed on this site, plus the odd remix here and there to add performers, but those are the important ones. Certainly at the time UK radio stations were just playing ‘Forget You’, at least in my memory, and there it got a little bit overplayed, this and ‘Just The Way You Are’ were easily the two most common songs to hear on UK radio in the second half of 2010, so Bruno Mars' dominance would be assured. Very big chart run and at this point I was absolutely listening to the chart show every week so got big exposure to this for a long time after. That said, this comes from one half of the genius that made up Gnarls Barkley and ‘Crazy’ and with time away from hearing it and taking note of its composition, it’s a very well-made song, with some of the Smeezingtons' best ever production. Cee Lo’s soulful voice is incredible here, and it’s packed full of memorable and fun lines that Cee Lo delivers really well despite the quirkiness ‘I guess he’s an Xbox, and I’m more Atari’, ‘Yeah, go run and tell your little boyfriend’, and it flows together pretty beautifully. It’s not quite as fun or obviously singable as ‘Crazy’, and ironically for a song telling someone to fuck off, I don’t feel all that much emphasis and therefore need for the swear word here, meaning ‘Forget You’ might even be slightly better which would be an insane thing to say about a censored version normally. It is only a small criticism, and either way, it’s a great package of a song, and the message, a sort of cold nonchalance after being treated badly is very empowering, and Cee Lo looks fantastic in the video, as one should if you're laying a beatdown about how you are far better off even though a previous love interest has left you. Or the music industry. Apparently. Cee Lo was chosen for this song as one of the guys who could say all this stuff and stay classy while doing it so that may be why his style is oozing out from this. Also a good and understandable critique for a production team trying their best to make it big, the Smeezingtons trio had been trying to break in for the best part of half a decade at this point. Although quite obviously given the success of this and all the other songs that Bruno Mars was singing on, another example of capitalism subsuming all critiques into itself by making the production team a stunning success and the song radio background fodder, going on to write standard industry radio pop, by writing a 'fuck you'. Though certainly not radio fodder without its quality when you actually take the time to listen to it. It kept off possibly the most forgettable #2 of this year, the thinly veiled warmup to Progress that was 'Shame'. I mildly liked that but it has nothing on this song. Yet again though, despite Cee Lo Green delivering a generationally good vocal performance here like he did on 'Crazy', he seemed unable to get more than one huge hit at a time, and despite this leading off his only solo album that anyone has ever heard of, The Lady Killer, and a few more follow-up singles that did okay and that I thought were good for the time, 'Bright Lights Better City' was certainly fun enough the year after, this remains his only significant moment as a solo artist. Next up, the top 10. At this point, I love all of the songs remaining a lot, hopefully most of you still have a few favourites left and that's all I'll say about that.
Saturday at 12:584 days I think that would be in my top 10 (though I think most of what is still to come are ones I enjoy too), very overplayed but deservedly so as one of the best hit songs of the year, it's strange thinking it was originally had an expletive in it as the clean version has really eclipsed it that I often forget it wasn't called Forget You originally, the X-Box-Atari line is still very cool. I did prefer Bright Lights Bigger City though and wish that could've been a hit.Club Can't Handle Me is one of the better songs from both artists, it's very of the time and I don't go back to it much, but it works well and indeed miles better than the Saturdays song it beat (another very clear memory from my early days on Buzzjack).Telephone is OK, but I think was definitely riding the video hype and Gaga's general superstardom, not sure it quite holds up that well as a song these days. Bruno Mars' songs are similar, I do think a lot of his early 2010s material hasn't aged the best compared to what came after, Just The Way You Are is still a competently sung and put together song, but it is quite typical of that sickly sweet 'you're amazing despite how you don't see yourself' acoustic singer-songwriter mega seller of which there are several more to come.Dynamite has the most brainless lyrics ever, but it's still pretty fun purely as a throwback to that mindless party sound. He had already become way too Americanised though and I can't defend what came after.
Saturday at 13:164 days I do like “Telephone” and might have it slightly higher, but thinking about it it’s the little touches like the jangly intro and the breaking up that I really like rather than the main thrust of the song which isn’t anything that special. It’s hard not to smile at “Club Can’t Handle Me” - it’s a time capsule but a very fun one.I do actually think the 2 syllable “Forget You” scans better aside from any profanity considerations. It was so overplayed but it’s an extremely well written and sung track.
Saturday at 14:344 days 'Forget You' was my #1 of 2010 though I'd probably have 'Teenage Dream' there now which was my #2. Still love it whenever I hear, not that often tbh. It's a really fun, soulful track. Liked 'Bright Lights Bigger City' as well as several of Gnarls Barkley's singles too.Not fussed that it prevented Gary and Robbie from getting there either. 'Shame' is just alright but nothing special.
Saturday at 14:454 days 'Forget You' was good but yeah way overplayed on the radio/music channels.Keeping 'Shame' by Gary and Robbie off #1 wasn't a shame, not one of their best songs.'Bright Lights Bigger City' from Cee Lo's album was great like a Bond theme tune.'Anyway' and also 'Satisfied' from his album were very nice too. Saturday at 17:114 days Love F You, a big uplifting soulful song which still sounds great, especially in its less played original form.
Sunday at 00:374 days I went off F You quickly at the time as my sister was obsessed with it. She even had it set up as the ringtone for when her work called her. 🤣I do really like Shame and would’ve liked to see that get to #1, but I’m not complaining.
Sunday at 00:414 days I remember Cee Lo Green and Paloma Faith performing Forget You together at the 2011 Brit Awards, but I can’t find a decent quality version of it anywhere.
Sunday at 10:033 days Bright :Lights was my chart-topper for Cee Lo thats his best track post Crazy, but Forget You is pretty good too. I wasnt interested in the expletive version, too stark, crude and blunt for a pop song. As I have said many times on BJ, if your song creatively needs an F word in it (see title of pre-Queen excellent Adam Lambert non-radio-play single) then surely removing said word is purely for financial reasons and a watering down of the "art". In this case it absolutely wasnt needed in the first place, so maybe that was more trying to generate headlines, cynically. Cee-Lo is a great singer, and a decent animated monster in the movies, but I dont expect he will be turning up on hit records any time soon.
Sunday at 10:303 days 'Forget You' is so cheesy but it's such a feel good song. It never fails to put a smile on my face.I would have put this in my top 5 of 2010. Edited Sunday at 10:323 days by Charlielargepotatoes
Sunday at 16:313 days Just The Way You Are was good at the time but thankfully Bruno had surpassed that in quality multiple times (especially with his next lead single which should have got to #1).Telephone was a huge pop event at the time! The song is admittedly quite basic(?) for Gaga’s standards but that video more than makes up for it. I remember a rumour circulating in 2012-13 that the sequel would be ‘Ratchet’ with Gaga, Bey and Azealia - a shame that never materialised. 🤭Never really cared for Forget You but no denying its catchiness. Always preferred Bright Lights Bigger City tbh.
