The charts are a measure of what's currently popular, people need to deal with the fact that at some points that might be a lot of older songs. And anyway why 3 years? How would they arbitrarily decide on a threshold?

3 years is too generous. HMV wouldn't stock CD singles after a few months. I wouldn't want to lose songs discovered later than their release. Like Cruel Summer. So maybe the limit needs to be 2 years after their first appearance in the top 40? If its been top 40, its been a hit and run its course. If it comes back, its not a rediscovery of a formerly forgotten track but a revival.

Yes. The new tracks getting the same kind of exposure/promotion on Spotify as they do Apple Music would give them a bigger boost than what they achieve on AM, thus positioning them in a stronger position to get added to key playlists more frequently and the turn over not being as horrible as it is. New music by smaller/"more local" artists always start off stronger on Apple Music than they do Spotify, due to AM "Geo-Blocking" their playlists iirc. So if they had that kind of exposure on Spotify immediately - the biggest streaming platform - it could only be a good thing imo.

What does it matter to Spotify whether the music people stream is old or new?

This - and if they are not getting pressure from labels (who are getting the £ regardless if it’s new or older acts) then they have no reason to change.

I have a conspiracy theory that Spotify purposely doesn't update the UK Top 50 playlist on time when big artists are dropping fast. That gives them an extra day higher up the playlist, the higher up the playlist, the more likely they are to be listened to.
