June 13Jun 13 It was quite openly desperate of X Factor to recruit JLS and One Direction due to the sales figures/interest in the finalists singles falling year by year (not that it worked at all), and hilariously inappropriate when there's a 'woo, JLS 1D!' on what's supposed to be an emotional charity single, and even funnier is it's just before the choir drowns them out which makes their contribution limited to just that...the whole thing is quite spectacularly bad, definitely for the best this was the last finalists song. That year definitely also felt like the beginning of the end of X Factor's dominance, outside of giving us one of the few genuine long lasting stars as the winners, it felt significantly less buzzy (didn't help that the judges were completely refreshed).
June 14Jun 14 Author #30 coming within the next hour and I think it may be a bit of a shock.surprise to most people.
June 14Jun 14 Author 30 – Glad You Came – The Wanted2 Weeks at #1 / Weekly Sales – 117,165 & 73,769#24 in EOY 2011 – Total Sales of 496,100Coming in second last in the countdown is what I’m guessing is the first surprise of the countdown. Glad You Came by The Wanted was the second single from the bands second album Battleground, it was also their second #1 single after their debut single All Time Low reached #1 in 2010. Glad You Came can be considered an international breakthrough through hit for The Wanted, reaching #3 in America, #2 in Canada, #13 in New Zealand and #20 in Australia. Debuting at #1 with healthy sales of #117,165, it stayed their for two weeks selling 73, 769 copies in its second week. It was the only new entry in the UK top 10 on the week of it’s debut with Little Bad Girl by David Guetta, Taio Cruz & Ludacris being the next highest new entry at #16.On the song itself I’m not really a fan of it and never really have been if I’m being honest. I feel that there are plenty of other songs about ‘being out at the club’ or ‘partying’ that I just preferred much more than this one.
June 14Jun 14 I would say on balance this was my favourite single from The Wanted, although at the same time it's not a huge favourite of mine or anything. I think the Euro sound (the production felt inspired by Edward Maya/Inna etc) worked and lyrically they sold the vibe quite well (it felt quite natural to see them doing a club track as they often gave off a bit of a 'lads on tour' vibe to me).I was surprised it did that well in the US, as it feels very European, but guess club bangers and boybands were marketable at the time.I haven't looked at the whole list but suspect it would be in my top 20.
June 14Jun 14 Really enjoy 'Glad You Came' and would be much further up for me but it is interesting to seeing a total opposite opinion nonetheless!
June 14Jun 14 Didn't like it at the time thought they were culturally appropriating the accordion from Portuguese-speaking-world holiday music! Now I think its rather good.
June 14Jun 14 No complaints about the bottom placed song here - The X Factor really ran that charity song concept into the ground, and this manages to be even more unlistenable than the three which came before. The "JLS 1D!" cameo was clearly just to add a few sales.I'd certainly put a few other songs below 'Glad You Came', but I'm not a huge fan and prefer their earlier #1. "Hand you another drink, drink it if you can" is a rather cloying example of trying to sound rebellious but still cater for a young audience.
June 14Jun 14 Yeah I'd also have 'Glad You Came' a little higher I imagine, I liked how it was leaning into the summery dance trends that were taking off and I find it more interesting than 'All Time Low' at least in sound, lyrically it's a bit eh.
June 14Jun 14 I really dont mind that version of Wishing On A Star - granted its not worthy to be compared to the fabulous Rose Royce original, but they dont ruin it for the most part with quite a few good singers involved. Glad You Came is a good pop track and I generally enjoyed The Wanted tracks. Sobering to think both records so far feature a member who died tragically young. That seems so wrong.
June 14Jun 14 Wishing on a star was bad even by x factor charity standards, no wonder they moved it to the winners song being the charity single from here onwardsGlad you came , wasnt a bad song by any stretch of the imagination but we were definitely in the oversaturated boy band era , this wouldnt of been any different if JLS, One direction or even Rixton released it so this low seems fair
June 15Jun 15 Author 29 – She Makes Me Wanna – JLS ft Dev1 Week at #1 / Weekly Sales – 98,016#53 in EOY 2011 – Total Sales of 341,800Back-to-back boyband songs dropping out with the JLS single She Makes Me Wanna finishing in 29th place. A collaboration with the ‘it’ producer’ of the last few years in RedOne, the song was a result of JLS winning an auction in 2010 for the chance to record a song with RedOne. Featuring vocals from US singer Dev She Makes Me Wanna became the groups fifth #1 from 7 releases selling just under 100,000 copies in it’s first week on sale. Despite the high profile collaboration with RedOne the song did not make an impact on the chats outside of the UK and Ireland. The week this went to #1 was also the first chart week after the tragic passing of Amy Winehouse. That week Amy had 5 songs in the top 40 and 6 in the top 50. (Back to Black #8, Tears Dry On Their Own #27, Rehab #29, Love Is A Losing Game #33, You Know I’m No Good #37, Valerie #41 and Valerie[Mark Ronson version] #45).On the song itself it wasn’t one I was overly familiar with before listening to it for this, in fact the only JLS songs I knew were Beat Again and Take A Chance On Me. I listened to it a few times for this and similarly to Glad You Came it just never really did anything for me against the other #1’s in this countdown.
June 15Jun 15 I was still watching X Factor in 2011 and remember rooting for Amelia Lily when she was brought back after Frankie Cocozza was kicked out. There was some other great talent that year too like Little Mix and Misha B. Also... Johnny Robinson was a thing x I agree that the 'Wishing On A Star' cover was really poor though, a limp rendition and tacking on 1D/JLS for that barely there cameo reeked of desperation, even if for charity.I quite like the Euro summer instrumental of 'Glad You Came' and it's interesting that the final word of each line in the pre-chorus spills into the first word of the next line, but overall it's fairly basic. On balance I'd have it a bit higher but am not too mad as I do find it a tad overrated in the world of boyband songs. It was quite something to watch it do so well at the time though! Like you say, it went top three on the Billboard Hot 100, plus made it on to Glee.Boybands taking a battering so far! Dev being on a #1 single was fun but overall I find 'She Makes Me Wanna' pretty throwaway. I had forgotten how popular Geographical listing was in 2011 until being reminded of 'On The Floor' the other day and now this!
June 15Jun 15 Yeah this is crap, a little better than The Club Is Alive, but not by much and just felt like a desperate attempt to copy the in sound to get an easy hit, right down to reeling off the countries and cities like Jade mentions.I'm realising how most of their singles were really trend chasing to what was around at the time. I wonder what their stuff would sound like if they'd been active from 2013-2016? UK house music influenced maybe? Or would they have released more stuff like the singles from their debut album that at least felt a little more natural than what followed.I don't think it's a great look to have no individuality and just copy whatever is popular at the time. Having said that I did like some their songs that didn't get to No.1 like One Shot and particularly Eyes Wide Shut, although granted the latter was just copying Calvin Harris' I'm Not Alone synth, but somehow it felt warmer and more authentic than these naff songs about the club that they kept coming out with. These are the kinds of songs that made me so tired of the club banger era when it was happening in real time. I look back on it more fondly now by only listening to the good singles to come out of the era/movement, and not this kind of stuff.Love that auction factoid though @Paddington James lol. The fact that RedOne was auctioning off his services at all is brilliant, imagine if Adele had won Edited June 15Jun 15 by gooddelta
