Posted October 27, 200816 yr No Christmas for Top Of The Pops Source: MW 09:24 | Monday October 27, 2008 By Ben Cardew Pop music fans face disappointing Christmas TV viewing this year, after the BBC pulled the plug on its traditional festive edition of Top Of The Pops. The iconic music show, which was axed as a weekly show by the BBC in July 2006 after a 42-year run, has long been a staple of the Christmas TV schedules, pulling in millions of viewers to its afternoon show. Even after the weekly edition came off the airwaves, the Corporation continued with the Christmas special: the 2007 show aired on BBC One on Christmas Day, with performances from artist including Kaiser Chiefs, Girls Aloud, The Proclaimers, Kate Nash, Katie Melua and Robyn. At the time, BBC head of music entertainment Mark Cooper told Music Week that the show “had to earn its place every year”. Despite the decision, the BBC is going ahead with a Top Of The Pops 2 Christmas special this year, as well as a seven-show run of the spin-off show. BBC Audio & Music executive producer Mark Hagen says that viewers can expect “90 minutes of festive mayhem” from the 90-minute TOTP2 special, which is traditionally the biggest-rated show of the year. The programme will pair classic Christmas songs from the likes of Wizzard and Slade, with “more unusual items from the festive stocking” he adds. In the run-up to Christmas, the BBC will air seven 45-minute episodes of TOTP2, with a similarly festive theme. Recurring themes in the new run of TOTP2 include classic one-hit wonders, the defining hits of 2008, as well as showcasing some of the artists who have died this year such as Pink Floyd’s Richard Wright. =============================== I think this belongs in here, it will get better viewed
October 27, 200816 yr I think they're probably scared of it being so good that people will reiterate their demands for it to be rightfully brought back which would result in them being proven wrong about taking it off the air in the first place. -_- Come on you can't have Christmas without Christmas Top Of The Pops!
October 27, 200816 yr Ugh how annoying, I always watched it and I hate TOTP2 - not a good replacement. :( They need to bring it back permanently, not canceling the only time they show it these days. -_-
October 27, 200816 yr Coz Christmas TOTP2 will be THRILLING :/ I know! A show full of old christmas songs? Who would have thought of that? GENIUS! :o :o :o
October 27, 200816 yr How do they expect a xmas TOTP to earn its place for airing when its been cancelled  I dont watch TV on Christmas day so its not a massive loss for me but its still a bit
October 27, 200816 yr Its a f***ing farce. I hope TOTP2 records new performances from those 'defining songs of 2008'.
October 27, 200816 yr I know! A show full of old christmas songs? Who would have thought of that? GENIUS! :o :o :o And they'll probably all be on the chart of (Jess checks diary) December 21st.
October 27, 200816 yr If theres no TOTP at Crimbo-then TOTP is no longer running AT ALL. Which makes the TOTP2 title a bit stupid.
October 27, 200816 yr WTF? I thought they'd keep it this year especially after a few stars and celebs recently saying they miss TOTP! :o
October 27, 200816 yr I didn't even know it was still going actually, makes sense to axe it since the weekly show has long gone now. I'll bet we'll still get 'Noel's Christmas presents' though. Thankfully we're all still eating Christmas dinner when the Queen's speech comes on and so miss it nearly every year. :P
