Administrators for collapsed entertainment retailer Zavvi are to close 22 UK stores, with the loss of 178 jobs. Job Losses As Zavvi Stores Close Ernst & Young said the closures would be effective immediately.

Joint administrator Tom Jack said: "Despite record consumer demand since Christmas, it is no longer possible to support continued trading across all of the Zavvi stores.

"Unfortunately the current difficulties faced on the UK high street seem to be discouraging retailers from investing in a significant number of new stores."

He said the 178 workers would receive support from the Insolvency Service's Redundancy Payment Office and Jobcentre Plus.

The remaining 92 Zavvi stores will continue to trade as efforts to sell the business continue.

The job losses come as computer maker Dell announced 1,900 redundancies from a manufacturing plant in Ireland.

There are also fears for 2,800 staff at fine china and crystal maker Waterford Wedgwood, which went into administration at the start of the week.

Damn - I wish that dreadful shop in Oxford Street would close..

Pleased Exeter isn't one of the first to go :D
ooops Chatham store is going and Hempstead Valley, that's my local Zavvi stores, I have to travel to Maidstone to get my music now, we don't have a HMV store in the Medway area.
The beginning of the end for Zavvi then

Yep, it sure is, and the "end" was really beginning when Zavvi shut down its shop in Camden earlier on last year.... But, really, they have no one to blame but themselves.... They took on the formidable mantle and presence of Virgin Megastores and really did NOTHING to distinguish themselves or make the stores look good or appealing... The Green/Black colour scheme was utterly APPALLING and almost puke-inducing in comparison to Virgin's brash Red/White/Black and their immediately identifiable corporate image... Absolutely NO ONE I knew ever referred to it as "Zavvi Megastore", me and my mates always called the shops in Oxford St and Piccadilly 'Virgin', of course most of us still remember the shop in Piccadily as being Tower Records....

Liverpool Clayton was a planned closure from before the administration, as a result of the new LiverpoolOne store. Looks like our outlets have all gone too. :(

Looks clear now that the Zavvi name will go if they can't sell it as one big company, as over 60 names are interested apparently, taking on a number of stores no doubt.

I can't believe that people are wishing that stores would close?!?!?!? You might not like the store but others do and people are employed by them. Choose not to shop there but don't wish it away.

You might not like Zavvi but any music presence on the High Street is a bonus.

Am I just being a bit over-sensitive because soon the music industry will be completely dictated by the buyers at Tesco and ASDA? I'm just praying that HMV hangs in there as they must be due to report their sales figures soon.

Thank GOD!

Mines only a small Zavvi as soon as I saw 22 stores closing I honestly thought our local one was going.

Literally Zavvi is the only entertainment store now, we don't have a HMV the nearest ones Reading..

I must admit though I went into Zavvi on Early Sat morning and it was full..I guess because of the reductions.

It was funny though someone was having a big argument with the Manager as they brought a DVD and wanted to return it after breaking the seal..mmm..I sense they watched it then wanted to take it back! :D Plonkers!

The DVD was scratched too I couldn't help but listen as most of the store was doing..

This is terrible so many are without a job now..I feel soo sorry for them.

I was going out to work but I'm going to Uni now at least I Can get a Degree and then hopefully this country will be sorted out in 3 years..Here's hoping!

Yeah, Exeter's though are rubbish. :D

The music area ain't organised properly, some people don't even know what are the bands' genre, what the album sounds like, etc.

e.g. Gym Class Heroes' The Quilt is at the metal category. WTH!!

:( Noooo this is the Zavvi I use.

Guess if I wanna use it, its gonna be the Meadow Hall one..

Totally agree - Also Tesco whilst good do not stock the more obscure releases and in standard stores have no back catalogue. Tesco Metro stores and most Tesco standard Stores offer a Top 50 chart at most with Tesco Extra's offering a Top 100 - Not an ideal situation to be left with tbh!

I would imagine that the Oxford Street store would be the last of any Zavvi's to close - it was on Oxford Street that Richard Branson opened the first ever Virgin store. I don't know if the store is in the exact same location but that store does have a history behind it that the others don't...

should have kept the Virgin name, sounds better than Chavy Zavvi.

What i am slightly more concerned about than Zavvi's fate is what will happen to all the Virgin mobile stores. I am a Virgin customer and i don't really wanna change network :(

sure Branson would strike a deal with a new shop to provide stalls much like 3 did with Superdrug (weird choice wasn't it?) as Virgin mob is still his and not Zavvi's. They won't can the airtime provider i'm sure!

The fate of Zavvi will have no impact on Virgin mobile - Virgin mobile contract and PAYG phones can be bought from all Supermarkets and most phone stores.

I would die if that happened :(

The big mistake that Zavvi made was turning the shop from 60% CDs 40% DVDs to 60% DVDs 40% CDs <_<

If only Branson took over it again and changed them back to Virgin :(
