13 pointsThis week we celebrate BJSC's 18th birthday! The contest was established on 23rd November 2007, making Sunday just gone the big day! Happy birthday BJSC and thank you for all the amazing memories, great musical discoveries, and the friendships it has helped to form. Come and join in the festivities if you haven't already confirmed!13 points- BJSC 180: Confirmations

You do realise no one else has access to your personal recordings right xx11 points- FSR Rontvia National Thread 3.0 / The Greatest Hits of FSR Rontvia released
Street parties to mark SADU's win and official Best Of compilation released After a wait of 11 and a half years, FSR Rontvia has returned to the top of the scoreboard with Estonian folk/pop act SADU's Luukered. The group arrived to a hero's welcome in the capital of Constarvan after performing free concerts in Greenfroze, Skall and Republique d'Askorza, to thank their audiences for the generous gold medals awarded on Sunday. Ricardo Delta of the RTVN said: "We won eight of our first 64 contests - one in every eight entered - and then waited 115 contests for our ninth victory, but it's an amazing feeling to clamber to the top again after six second place entries in the interim and we're proud to have been successfully represented by the first ever Estonian lanuage entry in BJSC. The song has climbed to No.1 in FSR Rontvia this week, ahead of Black Box Recorder's These Are The Things, which sits at No.2 after winning Bop Idol, a popular music contest in another galaxy. We are ecstatic to have the chance to host the landmark 180th contest and will kick off proceedings properly tomorrow." In the meantime, an official compilation has been released locally and internationally to highlight 100 of FSR Rontvia's greatest hits. Picking the biggest, most memorable, and favourite moments from the 179 songs we have sent was not an easy task, but the four disc compilation is available on deluxe CD and vinyl, while it is also available to stream on Spotify. All of our 29 top three hits are present and correct, including the nine winners and 11 silver medallists. Disc 1 (pop bloc FSR) kicks off with our double winner Sheelah and our first ever winner, Love Song by Sara Bareilles, before moving on to second place smashes from Delta Goodrem, Jessica Winter, Holy Molly and Anna Abreu, before lots of our other favourite pop and schlager entries follow. Disc 2 (world music/spoken word/rock bloc FSR) opens with current winner SADU and stirring top five pieces from Ortiga, Dzivia and Billx & Otyken before taking in some of our other foreign language hits (and favourite misses) and then moving on to two songs that would later become mega global hits, by Hozier and Walk The Moon, a section of our favourite spoken word entries, and our rock and metal highlights before finishing with the 13 minute Dutch orchestral/ballad/rock epic by Sophie Straat that topped the end of year charts in FSR Rontvia last year. Disc 3 (dance/electronic bloc FSR) starts with our biggest dance entry, the winner RAMelia by trance legend RAM, followed by top five smashes from Prance Faris, Rivaz, Kosmonova and Michael Woods before moving on to the harder electronic sounds of Cassie Raptor, Hudson Mohawke, iushi vu and DJ Sabrina, South African house from DJ Kent & The Arrows, GoldFish and The Kiffness and then various other curios, favourites, Example's first hit (also sent several months before release) and other trance selections. Finally, Disc 4 mops up entries from when we temporarily dabbled in various other blocs, like the shimmering electro or Scandipop of winners Beautiful Small Machines, Chart Music and Lykke Li, the beautiful M.A.G.I.C. from The Sound of Arrows, and another early winner from US duo Uh Huh Her. Other big hits are covered on this disc from the likes of Midnight Kids, Pixie Lott (again, sent a year before it hit the UK charts), and of course Sheelah's first winner Psycho. The album rounds off with some of our mellower entries and ballads including the future star Freya Ridings (whose Lost Without You we sent in this live version included) and of course, rounding off with the eternal hope of our first ever entry, taking you back to the start with Delta Goodrem's Believe Again. Several top ten hits have been excluded to make way for mid-table favourites, niche gems, and domestic smash hit DNQs from the likes of DJ Kent & The Arrows, Pomplamoose & dodie, Dolcenera, Mira Craig, Sheppard and DaithĆ, all of which are some of our absolute favourite entries we have sent despite their failures in the contest. A few of the versions on Spotify are not the versions we sent (Example, GoldFish, DJ Kent & The Arrows, Pixie Lott, The Sound of Arrows and Michael Woods, while Chart Music - essentially an early demo version for Sally Shapiro - has been replaced by their version), while a few others are not available in any form. The full tracklist and playlist is below, and we thank each and every one of you who has ever even given us a single point in any contest for listening, and for supporting FSR Rontvia for 19 years. 7 pointsre the variants I think the majority of the variants debate comes from someone like Taylor releasing extra versions at convenient moments, which we know she did a lot with THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. It's all fair game, but I get why it attracts criticism because she's prone to doing it over multiple weeks, which not many others do (beyond, say, a late release Blood Records exclusive vinyl, or a full re-issue like Tate McRae's doing this week). It's not wrong or unfair and anyone can do it, but I totally get why it looked shady in the past. On a wider scale, we all know variants are largely keeping the physical album market afloat, and Taylor is just one of many who utilise it to its full potential - again, it's all fair game, and I don't think any one person can be criticised more than another for this, because everyone is able to play the game should they want to. As for RAYE, a couple of vinyl variants is nothing major, and it's fair for her to release them, and I don't think she should be criticised for it. I don't really know why this comparison's started up as the Taylor variant debate hasn't felt quite so prominent recently, The Life of a Showgirl's variants were largely (but not entirely, I know) contained to week 1 and it hasn't felt like she's employed tactics that could be seen as shady to block other artists from #1 at the last second. This certainly doesn't apply to RAYE so probably a good idea to let this discussion drop x7 points- Streaming Services Chart Discussion; W/C 14/11/25

6 pointsit's my turn to contribute to this series now and what a year I've got. 2006 particularly stands out for being out with the old, in with the new. This year saw the end of two long-running British music staples. In February, the final regular issue of Smash Hits magazine was published, after nearly 30 years on the shelves. This blow was followed by another one that July, this time on the television, as it was also time to wave goodbye to regular episodes of Top of the Pops, an even lengthier phenomenon of over 40 years. Consumption habits were clearly changing. Apple had found their place in the legal music download market in a time when shady file sharing was posing a threat to the music industry. Their iPods were all the rage and iTunes was the dominant platform to purchase music files on. The transition from physical CDs to downloads was really making its mark on the singles chart in 2006. For instance, 'Crazy' by Gnarls Barkley became the first song to top the chart on downloads alone. That is one of 24 #1 hits that I will be ranking in this thread. On a personal level, I spent most of 2006 as an 8-year-old in year 4 at school. I turned 9 that August and started year 5 the following month, the penultimate year of primary school. So I was very young, but already into the Now! That's What I Call Music series and absorbing pop culture around me; I'm sure this year will bring back many memories. I've just opened up my certificates folder to get into the headspace of my 2006 self and apparently that year I was achieving certificates/badges/belts in gymnastics, karate and swimming, while also "working hard at practicing her recorder" - simpler times x Back to the music... obviously every year comes with both the good and the bad, there's some dross to weed out here for sure, but on the whole I think I have a pretty strong top 10. Something was in the water that year. I look forward to stepping back in time with you all soon and sharing my thoughts on these chart-toppers. Feel free to let me know what you think too. š6 points- BJSC 180: Confirmations

6 pointsSmiley Kylie⦠itās literally been 6 years of following how Amazon Christmas exclusives do in the chart, and the trajectory is more or less the same every time. Itās abundantly clear by now that the key factor in the success of all of them is Amazonās massive push with streaming alongside Alexa prioritising these songs when Christmas songs are requested. Itās literally the only reason XMAS is in the midweeks⦠and yes, it is completely logical to compare it to Tom Grennanās Amazon Christmas song from last year because⦠itās precisely and 100% the same gimmick so far? So please donāt be so dismissive, that post of yours was quite rude. Weāre contributing our knowledge about this to be helpful and provide context. Yet despite you not having had a close interest in Amazon exclusives prior to Kylieās involvement, you believe you know better about it⦠š§ well, youāve proved that you donāt fully understand, if you think this boils down to ādifferent fan base, different song, different strategyā.6 points- Streaming Services Chart Discussion; W/C 21/11/25
Iāve said it before I do think thereās a chicken and egg aspect to this. Wham! is at the top of the playlists because itās the most popular and not the other way round in my opinion. People put the playlist on because it has their favourites near the top, and if it didnāt theyād play a different one. Not saying the playlists donāt affect the numbers of course, and itās true that British Christmas songs are done dirty by them. But I donāt think excluding streams from them would be fair as theyāre still deliberate plays (plus I bet youād broadly find the same songs still at the top anyway).6 points- Jade ranks the 2006 #1s

-late reaction- (I missed almost all of the second half of the results live as well lol but this time because they were too early in the day and I wasn't home yet!! so this thread is further contributing to my reaction giving/receiving imbalance as I've just been posting about in the Lounge ) Congrats Rich, wow you're on fire with the song contests at the moment - unfortunately this was another one I didn't vote for whoops, among such a strong field of songs I cannot say this one registered for me at all as a likely big hit but I obviously missed something with it for it to go on to win by a reasonably comfortable margin, perhaps I ought to give it another listen. It is good to see a pretty inspired winner anyway, Black Box Recorder were actually the only artist from the list that I had never heard of at all before as far as I recall...! The rest of my votes unmasked in the second batch of results being from Whoddy, Dan and Julian - mixed fates for those songs, 'Jump In The Pool' was definitely the song I knew best from the list and it is a brilliant song I was happy to revisit so happy it did so well but also fairly happy it didn't quite win as it'd have felt a little too obvious. On the other hand I am a little baffled at how badly Imogen Heap did as I'm sure she's generally quite popular on here and this was a fab song from her! Thanks for the discovery anyways. Pleased that my 12 from FKA twigs ended up making the top 5 but otherwise not the greatest results from my votes, I only voted for 4 of the top 10, poor brave Lamb and Fiona Apple being narrowly denied top 10 spots by Paris Hilton of all people lmao (I do have some nostalgia for that song due to plug.dj memories but it's still a bit naff xx) and had hoped Cherry Ghost and AWOLNATION might have done a bit better than that too. I finished 3 places higher than I expected though, yay! Thanks to dandy* and Rollo for a couple of bronze medals providing just over half of my total points and to AllStar, Cow, Jonjo, Mattias and Whoddy for the rest of my points, I did worry it might get completely lost and struggle to get any points at all (not least being drawn right after Cherry Ghost in the running order which fills a pretty similar niche, as Rich commented during the listenthrough iirc) so genuinely quite happy with that. Not too sure Sampha would have done that much better in the end to be honest! 5 pointsFantastic choice of podium placers! 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' is an enthralling burst of energy and a fun, witty time lyrically indeed. My mum's music taste is fairly on point so she bought the accompanying album on CD at the time and would play it quite often in the car. I have since added it to my own vinyl collection as an adult and what an album it is, storming debut. Arctic Monkeys and SuBo trading a record sums up the British charts perfectly! I'm pleasantly surprised to see 'Hung Up' so high for some reason but certainly approve! I think that song would've been my first exposure to ABBA in any form as my family didn't pass them on to me and we were a good few years away from the Mamma Mia movie. I agree that the sample is woven in masterfully. The Confessions on a Dancefloor era was a welcome re-invention and would be my second favourite Madonna album overall, only behind Ray of Light. I had forgotten what else was still to come but of course... it's DARE *.* I am more of a 'Feel Good Inc.' girl on the contrary but do still appreciate 'DARE' a lot too, very inviting hooks and electropop influences, yet still with some left-field flair thanks to the genius choice of Shaun Ryder on vocals. Indeed 'Feel Good Inc.' has experienced a huge resurgence this year but 'DARE' is still doing well in its own right as well, 673 million streams on Spotify and counting <3 Thank you Chez for putting this countdown together, I was intrigued as we often have very similar taste and a strong ranking was topped off with such enthusiasm in the commentary, a great read. Indeed it's my turn next :o I did wonder if I'd just want to hide in a cave for months after the work that went into BJSC hosting, but thankfully, putting a banner together for 2006 has already got me fired up again yay :D watch this space...5 points- Chez Wombat ranks the 2005 #1s

Thank you very much all for following and commenting throughout, I really appreciate and read them all, even if I could only respond via liking. Once I started this cultural analysis style of reviewing, I kinda couldn't stop which perhaps burnt me out on some days, but I really enjoyed it overall and it was interesting for me as well as I really quite love looking at histories of pop culture and how certain trends started, as well as casting a critical eye on a time I was too young to do that. I'm really glad people liked the commentaries and I'm happy to have taught some of you anything you didn't already know. It'd be dishonest of me to say this was entirely me and not influenced/taking some facts off Tom Ewing's Popular series (as well as Wikipedia naturally), so do go and check out that blog if you're like me, and love big review projects like that (maybe this will give me the motivation to resume my second album bucket list x) And in some way you could say this pace was by-design as, now she's free of BJSC hosting, I am pleased to hand over to @Jade to take you into 2006 (and check out gooddelta's 1998 ranking in the 20th Century forum while you're at it x)5 points- Radio 1 Discussion

5 pointsThe issue with Taylor Swift is that she can be accused of being inconsistent. Her initial campaign about the ownership of her music could be portrayed about standing up for emerging artists. She was saying that the contracts she signed early in her career were unfair. That's fine. However, her strategy of regular stunts to boost her album sales can be said to deprive other acts of the promotion they would get from a number one album.5 points- 2025 singles year to date estimates

4 pointsIf you don't follow the Christmas charts and how Amazon exclusives work you won't really understand what we're saying. Amazon heavily auto play the Amazon Christmas Exclusive (For instance when someone says Alexa play Christmas songs - It will usually Play the Exclusive twice in every 10 christmas songs if not more) Sadly it's just playlists that help the exclusive rather than people seeking it out to play (It's basically artificial streams like most playlists) She'll definitely be top 10 easily without downloads / physicals but to stand at chance at a Christmas number 1 she needs to be pulling in the same streaming numbers as Tom / Sam Ryder / Katy / Jess Glynne etc at the very least. Kylie has a great fanbase as we know so if she's say number 1 /2 in the first midweeks sales flash (Which most of the Exclusives have been) it will assemble the fanbase to download and buy all the physicals they can which will massively help trying to secure her the Christmas number 1.4 points- Christmas #1 Race 2025

4 pointsNice finish Chez, delighted to see Madonna made the top two. That is my favourite single of hers - no mean feat over 20 years into her career to push out a song so huge and fresh sounding, it was No.1 on my chart for six weeks. Great writeup too. Dare is really cool, a surprise chart topper indeed in the context of their career (you do wonder how Feel Good Inc didn't get there - I suppose bigger competition at the time - and Clint Eastwood - but then they were a new act and indie wasn't that in vogue at the time at the top of the charts so it did well enough considering). But Dare was a deserving one and Shaun Ryder puts in a star turn on it, with a very entertaining video too. Really good thread to follow along, in which I learnt a lot, and was reminded of a lot too, really interesting nuggets of info, thanks very much for such a stellar few weeks of content. 4 pointsLast year it was The Killers. The previous year it was Wham! 4 years ago they were neck and neck. Theyāve been getting roughly 600,000 each each year. The reason why The Killers were in the lead last year was because of their use in the film Saltburn. This year, however, oldies are taking over the chart more than ever before (hence Iris in the top 40) but we donāt know yet if this will impact on Christmas songs - and Mr Brightside is one of the songs benefiting. So possibly Mr Brightside will take a permanent lead, but itās difficult to say at the moment.
