February 18, 201115 yr I'm not sure I buy this argument about sales being more important than chart position, either. It's not as if GaGa is desperate for the wonga and, looking back, it always looks better to say 'number 1 single' than 'number 3 single (but it got really good sales, honest)' lol. When you get to GaGa's standing, I reckon chart position over sales every time. The UK chart isn't the only chart you know... And do you honestly believe record companies would take the opportunity for a song to be remembered as a #1 over them making more money from it? Edited February 18, 201115 yr by Bray
February 18, 201115 yr SLY is the best number 1 in a long time - if it gets there! Not that I don't like other number 1s, I just love SLY almost too much! Plus 21 selling another 100k! :o Could be on over a million by the EOY chart!

February 18, 201115 yr There is a huge difference between knowing that GaGa has a new single soon and to know exactly when it's out! The most amount of people who knew the release of BTW were fans! Still, you could say itunes send email to all the people who had bought GaGa's songs! Believe me, people outside Buzzjack aren't so obsessed with music, to know exactly when something is out! Yes, I see that, but my point is that "Born This Way" has been hyped for little under a year, whilst "Hold It Against Me" didn't really get much hype until it debuted on radio.
February 18, 201115 yr Yes, I see that, but my point is that "Born This Way" has been hyped for little under a year, whilst "Hold It Against Me" didn't really get much hype until it debuted on radio. There was no significant hype for BTW until the day before its premiere at the very earliest... or maybe that's just me, I didn't notice any hype about it outside this site until last Thursday.
February 18, 201115 yr 21 will definitely sell a million by the end of the year, question is: could it sell 2 million? It's definitely got the potential. Having bought '21', I honestly think it's a much stronger album than what '19' was. Where most artists tend to struggle with the "difficult second album", Adele has managed to create an album that is better than her debut. I also reckon we'll be hearing a lot from Adele on The X Factor 2011. I have a really bad gut feeling 'Someone Like You' is going to be the new 'Make You Feel My Love' which whilst it's fantastic for Adele as the song will continue selling throughout the year, it means we're also going to hear several butcherings of the song purely in the name of "entertainment". :(
February 18, 201115 yr Adele was able to take her time with the second album. The reason why so many second albums are disappointing is that they are produced too quickly. In today's climate, an act often needs to have half the second album written before the first one is released - assuming they write it themselves of course. Adele also had the massive good fortune to see Make You Feel My Love getting her back in the public eye at just the right time. I'm not saying she would have flopped without it, just that it was very welcome publicity for the new album.
February 18, 201115 yr Make You Feel My Love is exactly what most artists would want to have with their lead single from a new album. A song that's everywhere and gets everybody hyped up for your new album, and sort of reminds everybody you exist.
February 18, 201115 yr 21 will definitely sell a million by the end of the year, question is: could it sell 2 million? Could sell a million by summer even!!
February 18, 201115 yr 21 will definitely sell a million by the end of the year, question is: could it sell 2 million? i would like to think so but i very much doubt it, not many artists can sell 2 million copies of an album in the UK anymore, i think it will defo sell a million and will probably end up around the 1.3 million mark max a number 2 single, a number 1 album and (hopefully a number 1 single) isnt bad going is it :D
February 19, 201115 yr Ugh, overrated song at #1. Sorry guys :P I haven't heard the whole song... But most of her other singles (bar the rather bland Make You Feel My Love) top it for me... :P
February 19, 201115 yr This is Adele's year, she's got loads of potential massive singles on '21', she's already selling in humongous numbers at any time of year let alone Jan/Feb! I'm going to go mad (I haven't been drinking, honest!) and predict '21' will be a Back To Bedlam-type sales success. And, yes i know how many that sold in 2005. SLY is Adele's 'You're Beautiful' (though i think won't get so annoying from overplaying) and will open doors for album sales all over the World...plus, of course, she's definitely going to be on X Factor this year and SLY will be warbled by contestants from auditions to boot camp to finals. Mark my words, '21' has every chance of being a record-breaker extraordinaire... Edited February 19, 201115 yr by bellboys
February 19, 201115 yr Make You Feel My Love is exactly what most artists would want to have with their lead single from a new album. A song that's everywhere and gets everybody hyped up for your new album, and sort of reminds everybody you exist. Definitely. It's just that Adele managed to achieve it with a single from her first album rather than anything from the second album. And good luck to her. Success in the music industry is often down to luck. At least Adele has some talent to add to that luck.
February 19, 201115 yr Whilst i'm not denying that MYFML's ubiquity on X factor wasn't a stroke of luck for Adele, I genuinely feel what really swayed it for her this time was her SLY performance on Jools Holland in November 2010. I'm sure there would be people who suggest this was carefully stage managed and I'm sure there's something in that - but Adele had to deliver or it was curtains (Duffy also appeared on Jools before her album flopped like an 80 year old who's lost his viagra tablets so it's not just a matter of getting the artist on shows, they have to deliver. And Adele absolutely did.) Similarly, a slot on the Brits even though she couldn't be nominated. Stroke of luck/great management/preferential treatment? No idea but did she DELIVER again? 110% . Like those of us who had witnessed the Later performance predicted in here (it's all there to be seen now) singing SLY on The Brits was going to have one consequence - she would steal the show. And so it came to pass... :teresa:  Edited February 19, 201115 yr by bellboys

Mark my words, '21' has every chance of being a record-breaker extraordinaire... To be fair, the best-selling artists of 2010 were Glee Cast, Eminem and Rihanna, and I would NOT have predicted this in February 2010. So whilst Adele is off to a fantastic start, I'm not sure yet if this will be "her" year yet. It might be though. Who knows? I wouldn't be surprised if she was year-end top 3 in the albums tbh. I think that performance she did of SLY on Jools Holland clearly had an effect on people. Just the fact that even 3 months after she performs it, when the song finally gets put on iTunes, it charts at #36 (I think). The fact that people remembered it all that time, even so much as to download it is quite impressive.
February 19, 201115 yr Yes, like I said, SLY is Adele's 'You're Beautiful' but won't get as annoying as quickly. Makes me wonder if this is why she sang SLY and not Rolling in the Deep on Later, maybe this was always going to be the killer track from the album? Then have the album version totally different (and in most ppls opinion inferior) to the live version so that they had additional sales channels later on, for instance if/when she appeared on the Brits, which given her background may have already been promised her? Ooohh, conspiracy theory... Edited February 19, 201115 yr by bellboys

Mark my words, '21' has every chance of being a record-breaker extraordinaire... I think she has really big chances to sell a lot! I think that until July she will sell 1m (with 3 singles until then) and then 4th single performed on X Factor and there you go! And if she appears on X Factor near Christmas period then she will benefit a lot more. Probably she will sell around 1.8-2m?!
February 19, 201115 yr Even as it stands 2011 is or has been a big year for Adele, im not sure if 21 will hit the the massive 3 million sales like james blunt did but i can see 21 selling around 1.5 in total which is extremely good. For me i dont mind Adele,i wouldnt buy her material although if she was performing on tv i wouldnt switch off either, i like someone like you but its not something i would buy myself. She seems a nice down to earth person and there is no doubt the woman has talent so best of luck to her.
