Coldplay are yet to have an album which HASN'T sold at least 4xplatinum. Under 250k in two weeks is not very good for them.

As has been said, the market has decreased significantly since their last album and it's May etc. Besides, 'Mylo Xyloto' sold 67k in its second week and it looks like 'Ghost Stories' could beat that with Graham Norton promo this week so they're not miles off (so far).

Everybody is affected by the dying album market. I'm even expecting Take That to open on 250k or less, maybe lower after the tax fiddling of three of them, poor Jason Orange

Wonder what sales Ed Sheeran will open on.

I'm just wondering what people were expecting of 'Ghost Stories' if they think its sales so far are 'poor'. They're not a lot worse than the sales that 'Mylo Xyloto' had in its first 2 weeks and that was an October release. I don't expect this album to come close to the sales of 'Mylo Xyloto' for the simple reason that it's hard to imagine them pulling off a massive boost from a performance this time around, so it probably will end up having relatively low overall sales but really what else can you expect from an album that has a grand total of one, maybe two at a push commercially-friendly songs on it? It's doing very well so far IMO.
People do,like to sweep in these days and go 'zomg low album sales! Life over!'. Often any kind of context seems to be missed. I'm more impressed Ghost Stories hasn't differed too much from Mylo Xyloto with the first week sales clearly indicating the decline of the last few years.

Coldplay are doing well considering we're in May. A big drop in the second week is expected - they had MONTHS to gain pre-orders so sales were heavily front loaded.

Michael Jackson appears to be holding fairly well considering he's not here to promote the album or single.

No Big Weekend performances or Graham Norton appearances for Jacko. There is only a small gap between 3rd and 6th though, so I guess he could be out of the top 5 by the weekend unless something happens to stir up interest.

I'm quite surprised Mariah is on track for a top10 entry. It's close though, so she could be out by the weekend.

If things don't improved I think they should start thinking about lowering certification thresholds - although that's just my opinion :S
Do you know where Happy - Pharrell and Sheezus (album) - Lily Allen are today? :)

Lily Allen is #16

And not to mention it only has 9 songs on it as a whole!

Its first week sales were amazing, so much higher than I was expecting. I'll admit it wouldn't look great to see it go below 100k this week, but hopefully it won't and it's just a sign of low sales anyway. I'm pretty sure people were saying this about Mylo Xyloto and will probably still say it about Take That/Adele as well, with the sales constantly falling, you can't really expect astronomical sales all round.

For me just looking at the release schedule I thought they would stay at number one until Kasabian released their new album, I never expected Sam Smith to outsell them so quickly

In terms of sales we saw Daft Punk last year drop sales in thier second week at number one so its to be expected but I just thought they would get more than a week at number one so its just a surprise! I know Sam has had 3 huge number ones but that doesn't always guarantee album success

On the singles I'm happy to see Second City at number one and 1D out the top 10, just hope its not long until John Legend goes away! Loving Palomas run too, her longest run in the top 10 I hope she can make it top 5 at some point though I doubt it

So Lazy, he really needs to get promoting his material.

Mariah is still in the Top 10, good for her. Considering there is a small gap, it should be interesting where she will finish by Sunday.

As for lowering certification thresholds, I think the numbers are fine for now. Yes, the album sales are horrendous as a whole on a weekly basis but for the big acts and strong-retention albums, they sell well above the Silver and Gold mark in a few months. By October, we should have a sizable number of albums which would have achieved Platinum level.

If things don't improved I think they should start thinking about lowering certification thresholds - although that's just my opinion :S

I actually suggested that last year I think. Didn't get much feedback though.

If I saw that post I would've agreed with you :)

Jesus, Foxes falling 16 places to 29 :drama:

I know sales on Amazon MP3 are a small % of downloads but Sam and Mariah have both been reduced to £4.99 on there today - Should help both especially Mariah seeing as sales in the lower part of the Top 10 are so close.

I giggled

However on another note it just goes to show that a well planned marketing campaign is more important than mass TV performances etc,
