It’s also worth noting that Wales and Scotland were already committed to free school meals vouchers for the Summer holidays without needing a footballer to shame them into it.

No. We just can't afford it. Have you seen the rise in unemployment figures today? Extra benefits needed equals less to spend elsewhere.

As Barbara Castle once said 'We want Jam now'!!

It costs £112m a year. Absolute peanuts in the grand scheme of things. Of which some, but not much will return to Gov in form of VAT on foods.

To cover the rest they could close half of a tax loophole and make more than that in a month

You can't roll out the 'we can't afford it' and 'spend it elsewhere' line when you support a UK government that's happily beckoning a form of Brexit which makes the country's economy 9% smaller (according to the government's own figures).

It should be impossible for Tories to get away with voicing concerns about public finances and the economy now.

How many u-turns is that now :')

Absolute shambles. At least common sense and decency prevailed on this issue in the end.

Three in the last two weeks. More U-Turns than me trying to go around the supermarket to maintain 'social distancing' (c March-May 2020).

Does anyone know what is happening here?

Student nurses who were asked to join the NHS early say their contracts have now been cut short — but the government say otherwise.

Is anyone really surprised by this it's why they never challenge the market narrative when dealing with one of the biggest issues in British society at the minute!

Sounds legit. I'll have to bear that in mind when I'm arrested for defacing Robert Jenrick's home. "Sorry officer, but it's wrong to question me over this as we're in the middle of a pandemic, kthxbye".

If only I could be surprised by that arrogance.
