A dramatic week for our 20th birthday indeed. A whole lot more history.

Not sure what the issue was but a MAJOR thank you to @Philip for working to resolve it for us!

apologies for the downtime - sincerely. I know how much work goes into the chart show thread and how much enthusasm there is in the community.

We have been seeing significant traffic from bots lately. Some for example for GPT are AI models scraping the site for use in ChatGPT, others are used for training. We want BuzzJack to be found in these models but want to manage how often they access the site so a system to throttle access was setup and the results of any temporary ban logged to a file. These files become so big (over 85%) of one drive partition that it stopped our cache layer working correctly. Cache not working well = requests taking longer to complete and we were overwhelmed and stopped being able to serve requests.

• We were using the default settings for requests (workers) - these have been doubled to match our server specs

• The proliferation of large log files has now been capped so we wont see this again

• Monitoring setup to send emails when we reach 70% disk utilisation

Yeah this isn't sustainable for much longer with AI bots repeatedly bugging our servers.

We don't have a higher-than-usual number of guests online at all, 264 total users at the time of writing, we see lag issues when it's 10x that, so I'm not convinced bots are the issue right now.

I've let Phil now anyway so he'll take a look when he's around.

Argh, it's been such a mission to even load a page this past 24 hours! it seemed to start about halfway through the chart show thread yesterday.

What is with Friday and server lags? Is it related to the UK charts? New music releases?

It’s taken me an hour to be able to load a single thread. I just want to see the BJSC deadline 😭😭

And do we really want these predictive text algorithms scraping our content? Or let me put it differently. I’m not really ok with my thoughts and contributions being stolen by Sam Altman for his dirty little ponzi scam he has running with NVIDIA
