Posted October 11, 20195 yr M0quXl_od3g 9EcjWd-O4jI It's 30 years since two of the most influential dance records held the Top 2 in the UK charts. 'Ride On Time' is based on a sample of Loleatta Holloway's 1980 disco hit 'Love Sensation' (a song that has gone on to be sampled numerous times over the years). Controversy struck over the uncredited use of Holloway's vocal, leading to the song being re-recorded during its run at #1 with M People's Heather Small replacing the vocal. The song is credited for being the first high profile example of Italo house. 'Pump Up the Jam' fuses hip-hop and deep house, making it an early example of hip-house. It's notable for becoming the first house track to become a hit in the US where it peaked at #2 and completed 1990 as the 13th best selling song. In the UK, 'Ride On Time' enjoyed a six week reign at #1, holding 'Pump Up the Jam' at #2 for the latter two weeks. 'Ride On Time' has gone on to shift over 1.1m units whilst 'Pump Up the Jam' has surpassed half a million. 30 years on, which is your favourite?

October 11, 20195 yr Author I know it's only a year off but I remember being so surprised to learn these were both from the 80s. They feel distinctly 90s and you can notice they're influence in so many of the biggest 90s dance classics. Both ahead of their time and timeless, as these go down a storm on the dancefloor now and fit very well among today's dance records. It's very close but I've gone for 'Pump Up the Jam'.
October 11, 20195 yr Both are classiques but I've gone for 'Pump Up The Jam'! I couldn't believe it when I found out that 'Ride On Time' wasn't a 90s song, very ahead of the curve.
October 11, 20195 yr This is why I love watching top of the pops episodes from the 1980s on bbc 4(see thread in the Retro forum for proof). You really get to see how sounds and especially dance music developed through the era in the charts. They are currently on the 1987/88 episodes and you can hear and see it each week from MARRS Pump Up The Volume hitting no1 in Sept 1987 to the first ever house record in the top 40 the previous year in Oct 1986. Now into 1988 we have the classic S-Express theme. Looking forward to Black Box in 1989. Remember in the 1983 episodes too when I first heard the classic 'Temptation' by Heaven 17 being astounded that it was that old as it really sounded like something from 20 years later (albeit it was rereleased in the mid 90s). Black Box is the best for me!
October 11, 20195 yr Ride on Time easily, absolute classic  Pump Up The Jam is great too, but I'm less familiar with it.
October 11, 20195 yr Both are great but I much prefer Pump Up The Jam. Definitely the bigger hit here. Edited October 11, 20195 yr by Euphorique
October 11, 20195 yr Easily Ride on Time, thats a classic, great dance record Pump up the jam is not a classic, just a bad example of eurodance
October 11, 20195 yr Ride On Time - Loleatta Holloway's vocals are such a powerhouse. I always preferred Technotronic's Get Up to Pump Up The Jam anyway. Edited October 11, 20195 yr by jimwatts
October 11, 20195 yr ^agree on that, Get Up was much better, a masterpiece compared to Pump up the jam
October 11, 20195 yr Ride On Time takes this with consummate ease. Pump Up The Jam is pretty average I've always thought.
October 11, 20195 yr Pump up the jam is not a classic Yes, it is. Massive worldwide hit, still remembered today. Also one of the first of its kind. The definition of an hiphouse dance classic. Edited October 11, 20195 yr by Euphorique
October 11, 20195 yr I voted for Ride On Time but Pump Up The Jam is decent as well. Both songs are better than pretty much everything in the charts at the moment!
October 11, 20195 yr Ride on Time but only Loletta vocals I have always hated Heather Small's version so much so I remember age 14 going around with my parents to every record shop trying to get the original and only the remix was on the shelves.
