I'm a duty manager at Co-Op and there's no chance I am going to be enforcing it, we've been told it is up to us individually and personally I don't want to invite even more abuse than we already get for stupid stuff. We don't have security or anything so we can't just rely on that which I think would be a solid solution perhaps. I think the best we can do is lead by example but that's easier said than done as it's kind of all kicked off and half the staff don't want to wear masks either... I'd say in the days leading up to today, it was probably about 50%, maybe a little lower in terms of compliance, it'll be interesting to see today as I'm working tonight if it rises, I'd like to think it will rise to the point where most are complying!

The law is that we actually don't have to wear them IF there are other mitigations in place such as screens at the till which we do have, or closed off area for stock replenishment but we haven't been granted any equipment to be able to do that as of yet, but the company has said that we must wear them or face disciplinary action etc. But whilst it's a bit uncomfortable, the least any of us can do, employee or customer, is wear a bit of fabric on our face for a few hours and get on with things.

In Scotland almost everyone has been wearing masks without any problems at all, idk what the issue is down south.

We have a big fat liar as our head of government; you have Nicola Sturgeon.

You mean Cummings is a liar as well as Boris? :o

I don't get the confusion about mask wearing like clearly of you are sitting down for a meal in a restaurant you can't wear a mask but if your getting take away you should wear it as normal what's the big deal? It's mainly people who don't want to do this who are trying to undermine it.

I’ve only seen Ikea stop Someone in Germany for entering without a mask, and that was over a month ago. Otherwise no one challenges because there isn’t much need.

Public transport however hasn’t been quite as compliant so the transport company is fining folk now but DeutscheBahn isn’t which is a bit annoying as they control the SBahn in Berlin.

Like Andrew, when I was home in Scotland I saw universal compliance without issue! I’m not sure why the gov has made such a middle of it. It’s simple. Are you currently stuffing your face with food or drinks? No? Then wear a f***ing mask. Einfach.

I understand it perfectly but the best way it should be done to avoid confusion for some people is that if you’re in a restaurant or take out place and you’re not sat at a table, you have to wear a mask. For instance, if you’re sat at nandos or spoons then you get up to order your food at the counter, you have to wear a mask. That’s the best way to do this rule

I've been in England a week and its utterly nuts how different the reaction is here. So many folk have zero whatsoever concern fir safety. No masks. Squishing past each other when there's not even any need to get there urgently. Today I was in the supermarket and two women literally pinned me in in the self service machines (for baskets only) by cramming huge trolleys through the thin passageway to them and literally getting stuck. What the hell England???
Pleasnatly surprised after yday's shift, I'd say I saw about 10-15 people not complying, not many more than that! A few of those did apologise and said they genuinely forgot and of course they would have been a couple who are exempt.

Where is this though? From what I have seen most people are compliant and aware of others.

Of course there are exceptions and it does seem like old habits are creeping back in, but I hardly think this is exclusive just to England. It's a human issue, not one related to a specific country. The challenge now is not to let complaceny happen which is going to be very difficult.

Yeah, on the whole the U.K. are controlling the virus most successfully than most of Europe at this point (consistently lower daily figures than France, Spain, Germany etc. according to Worldometers), so I think that largely all four countries are being sensible enough.
I just wish they’d let me know a date when I can go swimming in Weeyals. Knowing my luck, they’ll announce September 1st next week.

Exactly. I mean it is pretty naive to think the UK won't experience something similar again, but the infection rate is creeping up again throughout Europe probably down to complacency and international travel being so much more fluid.

I get people want to go on holiday. And I get the travel industry is in disarray. But it's undoubtedly going to be the cause of a lot of the infections, as this is what caused the virus tp spread so fast in the first place.

1100 died in the US today from C19 and 773 more new infections in England according to the Ch4 news.

I think that anyone going on holiday abroad this year anywhere without 14 day quarantining when you get back is selfish and puts people's lives at risk back home when they come back from holiday and go to shops and supermarkets where older people and people with underlying health conditions may be shopping. Yes the case numbers seem low in a lot of holiday destination countries but still a lot of cases go undetected through and also airports and aeroplane environments are a big risk factor in the spread.

This is not a competition lmao

Not being rude, but the UK has consistenly been behind the rest of Europe for a while. Mainland Europe is trying to fight.the 2nd wave right now, especially Belgium and The Netherlands cause we're too small to do local lockdowns. The rest are clusters of infections. I hope the UK can handle those clusters in the way Spain, Germany and France are right now.

I think it’s wrong to judge people for going abroad. It might be a little misguided and not something I’d personally do, but the UK government was so keen for people to go abroad that there are now a number of Brits in Spain who are finding out they face a two week quarantine when they return and were told before they went that this would not be the case. Any plans they have upon return including going to work are now out the window. I’m not criticising the government for reintroducing this for Spain now but these people only went away because they were told they could.

So it looks like I’ll be stuck in my own four walls for a fortnight after Thursday then.

It makes absolutely zero sense for that to be the case but nothing at all surprises me with this government. I am currently in Tenerife which has fewer cases than my home and I’m also further away from Spanish outbreaks than the UK is. Including the Canary Islands in this would have been like locking down Devon and Cornwall when locking down Leicester after their case spike

Everything they implement is usually so slow, but instant introduction of 14 day quarantine because of an outbreak over 1000 miles away - f*** off
