Stupid putting it the other side of the weekend. Everyone is gonna have a giant party this weekend defeating the whole bloody purpose of the change.

Is there anything this gov is capable of doing right?

It’s what we’re doing (well not a party but a socially distanced BBQ) for Camden’s birthday. Was meant to be Saturday 19th but we’re now texting around to see if anyone can do this Saturday at short notice.

It’s pretty worrying that slot of older and vulnerable people will die because of this second peak!
Imagine having an eat out to help out scheme and then tell people it's illegal to meet up with groups larger than six...

Banning gatherings to 6 people seems a stupid idea. Isn’t the problem really that the group that appears to the problem probably won’t listen to these rules? I guess it gives the police more powers.

Hate to be the one that says it’s so bloody annoying but this is the third time this year these announcements have ruined plans. I’m all for the greater good but seems ridiculous to enforce this when they’re practically begging everyone to go back to workplaces.. falls on deaf ears.

I assume it’s so police have more powers to break up house parties and it clarifies that law so they can prevent these things.
Not quite sure why it was ever increased to 30 in the first place, that was quite the jump back up and now back down.

Wait for the first person to try as their defence "Yes, I did break the law but only in a very specific and limited way".

Except the scheme ended for most places at the end of August.

So you can be sat in class with say 7 class mates but those 7 can't come to your house for a sleepover or share a pizza on your birthday? Ridiculous.

Yes and now the gov are blaming the public for the rise in cases, yet were desperate for people to get back eating out to stimulate the economy. Which is it gov?
As far as I can see today they're specifically blaming young people not socially distancing at private house and garden parties and also pubs. Not schools as they've been open less than a week.

As much as schools are necessary to be re-opening for children's sake, surely that's one of the biggest breeding grounds for it outside of public transport? I don't see how encouraging everyone to get back to work and school and then banning meet-ups of more than 6 elsewhere makes logical sense to contain the virus? Surely it should be everywhere follows these rules or not at all? It seems that the government want us to partake in economically productive activities only regardless of the risk involved?
Does this 6 person rule apply to children? Say 6 adults are meeting up and one brings their 2 year old which makes 6 adults and 1 child is that against the rules? Probably a stupid question I know.

Boris has said today that furlough definitely won't be extended beyond 31st October as it's just keeping people in "suspended animation"

It comes as it was revealed up to £3.5billion has been paid out in wrong or fraudulent furlough schemes, HMRC fears.

From The Mirror online.

In his first press conference since July, the PM also announced moves to ramp up enforcement of the tough rules to make sure everyone is following them - or they risk being slapped with fines of at least £100.

And medical experts warned a second spike in coronavirus was being fuelled by young people failing to follow the rules on social distancing and hygiene.

From Monday people in England will be unable to gather in groups of more than six - including children - and if they do they could even be arrested.

The rules will apply indoors and outdoors, after police chiefs said that the rules were too confusing.

Weddings, funerals, workplaces and some other gatherings will be exempt from the rules.

Hah! I'm using that one. :D

I think a lot of people will be pretty angry that they can be in an office of say 8 people, albeit socially distanced where possible, but can't have 8 people in their back garden.

The scheme was the ONLY thing the gov has done right this entire pandemic. Ending it now when you have multiple sectors of the economy still suspended and legally prevented from trading is a f***ing disgrace. What are theatre staff and the folk who work at arenas and sport stadiums supposed to do? They legally cannot work so now they’re gonna be forced into JSA and into poverty.

Disgusting.

And 3,5bn£ hasn’t been paid out fraudulently at all. It’s the upper end of a HMRC forecast from the start of the scheme that has just been made public and sensationalised by illiterate far-right “journalists”. Lack of controls is not the fault of the hundreds of thousands of people who depend on furlough because the government has prevented their sector from functioning properly (rightly) due to a public health emergency.

Personally will take a few % of businesses trying it on if that’s the cost of keeping millions with a stable income and out of the food banks. Lord knows thanks to the Tories those lines are already busy enough.

I'm... not surprised at the rise! Where I am, I feel like no one's really social distancing? Certainly not 2m. Literally No one my age is doing it but I've also seen a lot of older people who obviously don't live together not social distancing. I used to feel guilty about meeting up with friends with no social distancing, but I don't have to distance from 1000 people in a confined school building so it makes no sense that I'm expected to do so from my peers outside.

I think once the pubs opened and the daily news conferences people kind of stopped thinking about.

From the headlines of the conference today it sounds like we're a while away from an exit strategy and they are obviously concerned about a bad winter, which I agree could be horrendous. The main thing for me is we need large scale events or for the Government to subsidise those people who can't return to work. I don't agree with extending the Furlough scheme as a whole, but for those industries still unable to open there needs to be some Government intervention.
