The situation in India continues to get worse. 200k+ cases and 1k+ deaths per day over multiple days now. The large amount of cases/case increases won't impact death rates for another 6-8 weeks. We could be seeing the situation in India becoming like what it was in the US at the peak and Brazil now. I just hope it doesn't lead to the rise of multiple new variants which the vaccines are less effective against.

Yet Boris Johnson (and a team of officials) are planning to go to India for trade talks soon. What sort of numpty thinks that is a good idea?

The new Covid variant with the worrying double mutation which first emerged in India was first discovered in India in 25th March so why weren't travel restrictions put in place then?

And why is India still not on the red list of countries in terms of UK travel quarantine policy now?

This is why I think this probably won't be the last lockdown, the UK government is NEXT TO USELESS when it comes to enforcing travel restrictions to keep out newly discovered dangerous Covid variants!

They'll all quarantine upon their return so it's fine.

They would t want to inhibit the liberty of our wonderful people now would they.

In all seriousness though the new double variant is just a better spreader there’s no evidence of it making people sicker.

I mean there is issues with making it more expensive for people in the UK who may have family in India to go there by putting it on the red list I understand that. Perhaps quarantine hotel stays in the UK could be made free for those people.

The biggest issue with the double mutation is possible vaccine resistance, if its one step down the mutation line from the other variants we were previously worried about that could mean its vaccine resistant.

We will have to keep a close eye on it! Do Most viruses not mutate and eventually become less deadly like in 1921?

Do you ever have anything positive to say? :P

I honestly can’t wait until I can stop doing lateral flow tests twice a week.
Apologies got confused, the Indian variant doesn't appear to be much different to the SA and Brazil ones so perhaps I was worrying too much :drama: But the Indian outbreak of Covid is still worrying, thankfully the government there doesnt seem to be anti-lockdown there unlike the Brazil government.
Northern Ireland has now moved on to the 35-39 age range. Getting agonisingly close to getting my vaccination. They better not go straight to the over 18s next and do over 30s next (although given that the AZ vaccine won’t be given to the under 30s there might not be as much overlap between the two groups).
Interesting you get both vaccine dates when doing it online for the centres, I got mine from the gp and just have to wait for the second phone call

India added to UK Covid red travel list. Seems like Boris might have to do his trade talk meeting via Zoom or postpone it then.

It was postponed just before this announcement. As usual, Johnson dithered over making a decision until there was only one option left. Of course, that won't stop the Tories calling Keir Starmer Capt. Hindsight even though the opposition were calling for a postponement several days ago,

The situation in India is so sad. :( Many stories of hospitals at full capacity and people dying in ambulances whilst going from hospital to hospital to try and find empty beds. Crematoriums in overdrive - indicating the real death toll is much higher than being reported. They're also breaking down due to being used so much.

To think we've still got a few weeks before all the 200k+ daily cases feed into deaths. In fact India is seeing almost 300k daily cases now. The actual figure is likely to be much higher.

It's so awful.

And yet no vaccine patents have been waived yet.

~315,000 cases in India today and ~2,100 deaths. :(

It's absolutely mad there. There will be some massive under-reporting too, so it's only likely to go up. I think it was something like 4% of passengers returning to England were positive.. that is from a random sample too.

If you thought our Government was incompetent at times, Modi took it to a whole new level.

Did you not see the example they gave on Peston lastnyt? Showed data from a plane that went from Mumbai to Hong Kong last week where out of 100 passengers 50 were infected all bunched round the original infected person and most only realised after day 12 in quarantine in a hotel. India and other countries need sorted before everyone is sorted when it comes to this.
