Did anyone see the new Health Secretary's comment about "cowering" to the virus?

This guy is an absolute prick. When the mask slips, this exemplifies the Tory mindset for me. Tone-deaf, devoid of showing empathy on a basic level or anything resembling human emotion and an inwardly looking selfish outlook ("Having COVID barely affected me, f*** everyone else")

Over 2 million people had to shield for months on end without having a choice in the matter, only for him to make a thoughtless comment like that.

It’s a big shift in tone given many of the people ‘cowering’ are doing so because of the narrative initially set out by the government or even just because the government did such a bad job of protecting them that there is no way we can trust them when they say it’s safe.

Also not a good look the same day the anti vaxxers come out and demonstrate. Scenes in Cardiff were horrific with anti lockdown protesters shouting abuse right outside Mark Drakeford’s house.

He's trying a different approach to the previous disgraced Health Secretary and attempting to curry favour from the populist factions of the party who are more in favour of not being as hesitant about the easing of restrictions, it's a deliberate and calculated move on his part but transparently shows him for the absolute monster he is.

I constantly lament the fact these soulless psychopaths are at the helm in charge of ruining running this country

(into the ground)

Javid has apologised for his choice of words, admitting that they were ill-judged. Apologising was the right thing to do although it would have been better if he had done so yesterday or, even better, thought a little more carefully in the first place.

So we've dropped about 42% in daily cases since last week and currently just over 29K positive tests were recorded in the UK yesterday which means they're absolutely free falling. :)

It seems to be either the Euros had a bigger impact that we expected and this is the cases tailing off from then or it's schools closing. I'd like to think it's herd immunity at this point but the drops are really steep and I always imagined that would be a slower, gradual decline.

Either way it's really exciting to watch and I just hope this trend continues and they don't fly up again in the next few days.

It's definitely the Euros, the final was a confirmed super spreader event inside and outside the stadium then you forget every single pub is full with people shouting and singing. The same pattern happened in Scotland, and as Silas said a few days ago - similar patterns in the likes ot Italy too. I think cases will go up again (and of course, you're gonna have 30% of cases who just don't get tested) but I really do think we're past the peak.

I went out on Friday night and most places are still having table service only, just with more tables. Loads of places shutting earlier than usual too. Obviously I did end up in a tiny bar with a dancefloor, which felt mad. But I'm double jabbed and of the opinion if we don't try and get back to some normal, what we experience now will become normal.

Hopefully Scotland follows England in lifting all restrictions when they are due to on August 9th. I think the review is in another week. I feel it’s about the right time now, cases really are falling and everyone has now been offered a first dose. Hospital and ICU admissions remain fairly low (in the whole of Scotland today there were 480 covid patients in hospital and 64 of these were in ICU). With me being young, the thing I’ve missed the most is nightclubs, it’s just not felt right going out to the pub and having to go home after with no nightclub! If all goes to plan, I’m supposed to be going for my birthday night out the weekend after all restrictions are due to be lifted. I just hope I’m not disappointed and Nicola Sturgeon realises it’s probably the right time now. Especially after England has done it she may feel more pressure.

It would be so good to go out again.

I just want society to feel more like normal. So many things are still off the table. Things being legalised hasn't caught up to people feeling comfortable to do them where I live e.g. meeting social groups of people you don't already know, exercise classes, etc. Casual social contact is still a thing of the past and it's something I really feel the lack of.

Boris is being condemned for opening nightclubs and now he is being condemned for trying to operate nightclubs in the safest way possible by enforcing vaccine passports. He can’t win either way
Is it any surprise these views come from a health secretary who’s hero is Ary Rand?

The vaccine passport is a truly awful situation to be in. I'm supportive as it's risk adverse, but at the same time I favour personal choice and if people don't want to take it, then that is their choice. It really feeds in to the anti-vaxxer propaganda though, of course they will forget the fact that hundreds of other ridiculous statements they've made.

I mean, I don't really see Boris bringing in the requirement come September - so much absolute bollocks comes out of his mouth it's hard to believe anything he says anyway.

Zero sympathy for Johnson. A good leader leads and then apologises when he gets things wrong rather than over promising for the rhe “likes” and shirking responsibility..

If the only safe way to operate a mass participation close up event is vaccine passports then so be it. Yes it will be sad for the people who medically can’t have vaccines but that is one of the many downsides of the virus (and wouldn’t it be risky for them to be in such an environment anyway?). And conspiracy theorist crap about slippery slope to Big Brother can do one. If it turns out if/when the pandemic subsides that the scientific advice is that COVID passports are not necessary but the government insist on having them then by all means protest. I’d be joining them.

I don’t understand why you’d bring it in 2 months after you open the bloody places. That is the most ridiculous thing I think

Im strongly in favour of them, And they should already be in place with the ability to show a negative test if you’re not fully vaccinated. Once everyone has had an offer for a jag then you charge for the tests to encourage take up of the vaccine, which is what France is doing and despite a mouthy minority it’s actually lead to record numbers to sign up for getting their jags

The Netherlands seeing a 36% decrease after the 600% rise from the past weeks

Yaaaas

Portugal And Spain have levelled out as well. With the UK turning around it looks like Delta maybe rips through quickly but also quickly runs out of steam. Pretty good news I think.

Hopefully the falls are sustained. But it's likely the Euro Football caused a lot of the rises. We could see cases start to increase again next week - or perhaps positivity rates (as with schools out there will be a lot less testing).

There seems to have been a sudden explosion in tourism. The hotels on my street are busy again, central station was heaving, the underground was packed.

I don’t like it can we go back to lockdown pls.
