So there we have it as we probably suspected - 2 doses of vaccine is pretty rubbish against Omicron. Those boosters are gonna be essential getting us through the winter.

I'm reading the news about this and it's all very confusing (unsurprisingly). So is suddenly being double-vaxxed completely useless and these boosters are drastically different or does it solely relate to the waning immunity? Cos surely if you had your second jab not that long ago you wouldn't need to get a booster as urgently as the early double-vaxxed.

It's important to keeping an eye on whats happening in South Africa with Omicron. Hospitalisation rates still seem to be low in South Africa for omicron compared to previous forms of the virus, that doesn't necessarily show its less severe than Delta but suggests that most people there even who are unvaccinated have had another form of Covid before and so have antibodies?

It looks like double jabbed with AstraZeneca is effectively useless after a few months and Pfizer/Moderna is OK, but significantly reduced. There will still be some levels of immunity, but maybe not enough to reduce transmission with vaccination. Suspect for the next 2-3 years everyone will need at least an annual covid booster and the at risk groups might need it twice. It does look likely it is a less "lethal" strain as you would probably expect, but the exponential growth estimates look crazy so any gains in how lethal the virus are, would be wiped out by the sheer volume of people who catch it.

So this vaccine passport that is introduced has to be electronic via the NHS app- you can’t use the signed paper card you got when you were vaccinated can you? Have been using that previously. Bit of a faff…

The app pass is easy to sort we have them in ni!

The anti-vaxxers are going to feel triumphant :(

Why South Africa? Omricon is all over the world. It did not even start in South Africa. Our scientists were just the first ones to speak out about it

Because South Africa is ahead of Europe and the UK in terms of Omicron variant wave spread, and their scientists are very good at monitoring it there. Yes I know it probably didn't start in South Africa!

You can request a covid pass letter be sent to you by post - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-c...id-pass-letter/

Because it has the best data from any country as the current wave it's undergoing appears to be primarily driven by Omicron. Whereas Omicron is yet to become the dominant strain in most other countries worldwide. The data coming out of South Africa can give a lot of valuable information regarding the new variant.

Other countries could be hiding data to prevent travel bans being imposed on them. South Africa doesn't really have a choice.

I'm really cautious with believing what every media article says. Got an e-mail today from a future guest asking me about the "South African variant" and I was fuming to read people calling it that. It just proves how easily the media controls people's thoughts and actions

It's summer holiday season here as well so people are naturally much more out and about. Oddly, we had a national election in November where millions gathered to vote and no spikes in case numbers thereafter but now there are with the variant and travel ban announcements.

I guess we will have to wait a few weeks as daily deaths are still in the 20s which is the norm for the last few months.

The deputy prime minister Laura Kuessenberg is saying no new restrictions tonight. So what’s the point in the presser?

Attempt to get everyone to forget about the parties?

It should be a resignation but it won’t be.

A party political broadcast. That should mean Keir Starmer and Ed Davey get their turn in the next couple days, but I won't be holding my breath.

And it isn’t a press conference, it’s a prerecorded address. He’s such a f***ing weasel.

Weirdly yesterday the Department of Health and Social Care put out a tweet (below) that said Covid passports would be required from 15th. It was then swiftly deleted after the Covid spartans in the Conservative Party kicked up a fuss - wonder if the PM is planning on dropping the vote and the restrictions in order to appease them and ensure his survival? They did this before in the summer when they put the idea out there and then pulled them at the last minute.

I still don’t understand the point of that address.

But he looked like a corpse

Trying to change the narrative. The problem is he's so up his own arse he think it'll work. Friday morning could be interesting if he loses the by-election, a January leadership contest?

What’s the betting I end up with Omicron this week just before I’m scheduled to get my booster?

I’m not sure why schools are still open if they’re this concerned.
