December 18, 20213 yr Happy to see people agreeing with me that lockdowns should be selective rather than applied to us all. I still think they could have been from the start and the gov couldn't be arsed to organise it.
December 18, 20213 yr Some positive news, South Africa have had their first day of decline in hospitalizations
December 19, 20213 yr I guess our current situation is the consequence of getting rid of the red list and allowing unrestricted travel to low-vaccine-percentage countries. And of course not helping those low vaccine uptake countries out more with their uptake. Both factors have allowed new variants to emerge and spread. Faith in the vaccine and vaccine uptake may be eroded in the future by us having a lockdown after Christmas because people thought they were getting the vaccine to maintain their freedom to meet their friends and family. Advice for shielding should return right now certainly for the vulnerable and certainly nightclubs should close now. I don't know if opting for another full lockdown is over-panicking or not and whether we should wait and see if the hospitalisations increase a lot first. Considering the hospitalisation and death rates in South Africa seem to be lower for Omicron than Delta and also that the vaccine booster still seems to work somewhat in reducing hospitalisation and death rate chances. Although looking at the evidence I am inclined to agree with the SAGE scientists and act out of caution and think we shouldn't wait for more evidence about Omicron or wait for hospitalisations to rise further but introduce restrictions as soon as possible. There are a lot of factors driving the very high cases in the U.K. right now. It’s not just the new variant because infection levels have been high over the past few months. The lack of preventative measures has been a concern for some time. They ditched face masks and social distancing earlier in the year. In many European countries, they vaccinated children from certain age groups over the summer holidays but the U.K. government dithered and delayed. My parents live in Cyprus where they have far fewer cases than here but to visit a restaurant or bar you need to present either proof of your jab or a negative PCR. Currently, the U.K. has one of highest number of daily cases in the world and that can’t solely be blamed on the new variant but more a combination of issues such as gross incompetency by the government, mixed government messaging / public mistrust and lack of any proper plan to deal with the situation. December 19, 20213 yr And that has now happened. First time in over a decade I had actual NYE plans and Covid has come and shat on them. 14 day mandatory quarantine, no early release and no exemptions for vaccinated. f***ing Boris and his useless shower of c**ts. Not to mention the merry band of dipshits who refuse to get vaccinated. Literally loathe every single one of them right now NYE is vastly overrated anyway. You can drink and celebrate at home and at least you're not hungry and homeless like some. Count yer blessings dude. :)
December 19, 20213 yr One thing I'm interested in is if the number of tests being taken is sky-rocketing? I'd imagine a lot of people are taking them because there going home or to visit vulnerable family for Christmas when they wouldn't normally take a test to WFH or for their job. Some of the positive test increase is surely just cases that wouldn't be detected outside Christmas?
December 19, 20213 yr Anti-vac crank Piers Corbyn has been arrested for calling for MPs who voted for vaccine passports to have their offices burned down. Whilst I'm normally one for free speech, I don't extend it to direct calls to violent action, especially when we're barely a few months from the murder of the MP David Amess. The book should be thrown.

Count yer blessings dude. :) This is such a boring response, just because you don't like it lol. Let people be upset without this patronising "we've got our health you're not homeless" shite lmao. Small events like NYE are things that help people with their mental health/happiness as something to look forward to.
December 19, 20213 yr One of my close friends is an extreme anti vaxxer and she's REALLY been testing my patience lately. We agree to never talk about Covid together but she has an alternative Facebook account under a fake name that I'm friends with (I know I should 'unfollow' but I'm just curious to read her insanity sometimes) and her and her psycho friends have been smugly sharing stories about random footballers dropping dead and passing out and using it as 'proof' the vaccine is out to kill everyone. Apparently there's a massive Telegram group where they've all found a way to fake their vaccination status and fake QR codes and it's been working so they're all celebrating together. It's just such a shame. She's such a smart woman in other aspects of life and is such a good friend to me and this stuff is just enraging.

I used to have a friend like that who was into the conspiracy theories and wanted me to sign a petition which was weirdly about the government stopping locking people up in institutions with covid. I refused to sign it. I think some people have been seriously affected by the pandemic in terms of their psychological well being.

Wife's employer is actually a microbiologist who develops new drugs but wasn't involved with any Covid ones. She didn't have either dose, much to the annoyance of her husband who had them. She said she knows how long it usually takes to develop a new drug and these were just developed too fast. Her sister's a GP and begged her to have it. She got Covid quite bad, is 58, and then as soon as she was better she had the jab. :o

Well I didn't discuss it with her but she was trying to persuade Nita not to have it either.
December 19, 20213 yr @1472643385790021633 Na toll. Looks like lockdown light 2.0 is on the horizon for me
December 19, 20213 yr Are the FFP2 masks going to be provided by the government? It's £10 for a pack of 5 masks here in the UK and they're single use. They can't ask everyone to use masks like those everywhere they go unless they're going to be provided for free surely?

The vaccine passport system is open to a lot of corruption then, it was a good idea but is probably not going to work long term :(

They do actually provide masks to low income folks but we’ve had them mandated since like April (for a while they let us wear the surgical ones in stores again but public transport has always had FFP2 ones in my state. And while they’re „single use“ folks tend to reuse them 👀 I also get 5 free from work each week (because if you’re in a workplace then they have a legal obligation to provide you weekly masks and two corona tests)
December 20, 20213 yr Cabinet at 2 - so prob new restrictions going to be announced. They'll be awful but we can't wish this virus and its variants away - have strong leadership and support the buisnesses that will suffer. But something as simple as that is not possible for our immoral lazy leaders.

But something as simple as that is not possible for our immoral lazy leaders. The thing is, some of the mooted restrictions are so rubbish that I don't know what I'd support. Very depressing, but guess we just don't know when Omicron will burn itself out.
December 20, 20213 yr I can only envisage another multi-month lockdown sadly starting December 27th. A circuit breaker would do f*** all and would just delay the problem.
