I am not even surprised that the British government has managed to come up with an excuse to prevent people under the age of their voters from getting the jab once all their voters are done and all Pfizer are cordoned off as 2nd doses for older people.

I worry that a lot of 30-40 year olds in the UK will now refuse the AZ vaccine and perhaps other Covid vaccines too.

As for Brazil I think it needs to be prioritized now for vaccine supplies I think.

The visualisation shown by the MHRA during their briefing now really illustrates the issue well...

The thread of this tweet is a nice easy to read summary.

The side effects of the vaccine regarding blood clots are still so small, that most would benefit. Many drugs/vaccines have side effects that are similar. Hopefully the blood clot side effects will be studied in detail and people can be appropriately advised not to take it if they are at more risk.

I'm just hoping this doesn't negatively affect the global vaccine rollout too much as the AZ/Oxford vaccine is one of the best at cost vaccines that is easy to store.

India records another day of record cases with over 126,000. I hope the cases don't continue to climb like they are - it could mean some really bad death totals in the coming 6-8 weeks the way they're climbing though. :(

Another country to watch is Turkey. They recorded ~54,000 cases and 276 deaths - a record high for both.

Brazil continues to see lots of cases and deaths. Over 90,000 cases and 3,700 deaths today.

Argentina sees new daily record for cases at over 22,000.

It looks like a lot of countries are being hit quite hard by this next wave of Covid-19.

And the news keeps getting better.

And let’s finally put to bed any idea that blood clots and AZ is political/brexity shall we? Janssen is Belgian

It is, however, very noticeable that the "Oxford" part of Oxford / Astra Zeneca seems to have gone out of fashion here.

but is herd immunity really something scientifically proven that it will happen?

Sorry if I sound too pessimistic or negative nancy but this past week I haven't heard that many positive news with so many variants being broadcasted on TV, Brazil current situation etc. etc. and it is bringing me back a bit to worrisome state!!!

I am trying to be more positive about it though especially since I've got vaccinated and I feel protected in some sort of way!!!

The J&J jab is the same tech as the AZ jab isn't it? And the Sputnik jab is the same as well. Slightly worrying about the latter, as I'm not sure we would hear anything about the safety efficency from the Russian State and would have to rely on a whistleblower. I wonder what it must be, I'm sure there are some working theories but no solid scientific evidence yet.

Seems all the jabs have a small risk attachment, you just don't hear about them and don't know whether they are linked to something else or actually the vaccine itself.

Every vaccine ever invented has had a risk attached to it. If these vaccines had been rolled out at a more normal pace then I suspect we would never even have heard about the risk of clotting.

I think it’s the same tech. The Russian one I have done an abrupt u-turn on since the News out of Slovakia that they tested it, found it was not as described and then the Russians went pure mental at them. So I’m on a „would I f*** trust that“ side of the fence on that one.

Im still optimistic about heard immunity. Theres some evidence that despite being vastly more infectious, the P1 / Brazil variant is actually tackled by the vaccine. As long as Brazil can get on top of things before they developed a variant that escapes the vaccine then we will be ok. The US going so good on vaccine right now, and the UK is motoring and the EU is finally pointing in the right direction. We might get a late summer out of 2021 after all

All medications contain warnings of risk no matter how small. I really wish the circus over this would calm down, getting my first jab tomorrow, not sure which vaccine I’m getting.

Kind of - the vaccine roll out in Israel is showing signs of approaching herd immunity. Covid-19 has an R0 (reproductive number) of 3 which is very infectious, however you can calculate a rough percentage of population needed to be vaxxed to get herd immunity by: (R0−1)/R0) which is 2/3 = 66.6%. I guess if new variants are more transmissible by 30% then R would be more like 4 and it'd be 75% but generally you don't need to vaccinate *everyone* except with really really infectious shit like measles.

Lucky you having the vaccine doses already !! Yes- you are definitely protected, basically near 0% of hospitalisation or serious illness and a good protection against transmission as well.

UK and Israel the only states heading for the landing zone so far (see below from John Burn-Murdoch @jburnmurdoch)

I thought Covid was just as infectious as measles!

I also thought it was more people than that that needed vaccinated for herd immunity. So the under 18s probably won't need to be vaccinated then? (there are ethical concerns associated with that as very few children get severe Covid.)

Just received my first dose of the vaccine today. I got the Pfizer one so it should be about 6-7 weeks until I’m fully vaccinated. So relieved to get it down before the full school return on Monday. The vaccination team were absolutely amazing, I can’t praise them enough.
Finally going back to the gym this week! Excellent timing considering my bike (which had been the sole form of exercise all of 2021) completely broke yesterday sending me into a frenzied fall! (I'm ok tho)
Wish I could join you! Wales aren’t opening gyms until 3rd May. It would be nice to have some stress relief after returning to full school today. A nightmare.
