November 29, 20214 yr I for one can't wait to finish discussing the minutes of last year's meeting and get back to debating the merits of the lyrics in "Fairytale Of New York", "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" for the Xth year in a row, perhaps this year we'll finally settle it.

I'm gay and Fairytale Of New York is my favourite Christmas song. The insult makes sense within the context of the song, I can't be arsed endlessly debating it though. Baby It's Cold Outside was never about date rape or anything until some radio station thought it might be a few years ago and the internet has never given up arguing about it since. What is the controversy about the lyrics of Band Aid? Has this one just completely passed me by? (just googled it and I remember now, that's probably the most valid criticism of all of them tbh) Basically none of them offend me in the slightest, but equally if an individual radio station decides not to play them then I couldn't care less. They have always had control over what is and isn't played on their individual station and we only seem to pretend radio is the main form of music consumption for the whole country when it comes to shit like this. November 29, 20214 yr That is quite a long time though. It’s at least 5 weeks a year where the chart is completely dominated by Christmas music. Over a decade, it’s basically a whole years worth of charts that are dedicated to just the same Christmas songs. Exactly. If it was still like the download era and Mariah and The Pogues graced the Top 20 for a fortnight with a bunch of others floating in the lower half of the Top 100 then I wouldn't really care. But the scale of it now year after year is very significant.
November 29, 20214 yr I think most of the discussion about "Fairytale of New York" was more so radio not censoring the F word. They censor swear words/other slurs, so they should treat the F word the same. I'm gay and have no issue with its use in the context of the song (in fact I screamed it loud during karaoke once  ).
November 29, 20214 yr Its a vicious circle because if the old xmas songs are in the charts then the radios and streaming playlists will have them in heavy rotation or at the top of Christmas playlists. I don't think whether they are in the charts or not has any significant bearing on that. People are still going to want to listen to those songs at Christmas time and the radios and streaming playlists are going to cater to that because that's what their public wants. We're already looking at the possibility of this week's #2, if it's not a Christmas song, being something that's not even in the 10 most streamed across all platforms, and that's only going to amplify through December. There's only so much the OCC can do to produce a meaningful chart out of songs which clearly aren't the most popular of the moment.

That's seemingly not a problem when whole albums are starred out bar the top 3 tracks. If the OCC can stop brand new tracks from charting then they can certainly bin a load of old Christmas songs. I'm certain if Mariah and co weren't in the charts and other artists had the chance to chart high labels would push for new xmas songs to be top of play lists and in turn radio would play the new xmas songs that are charting high.
November 29, 20214 yr Just read that Adele sold 105K vinyls in the US, so a much better performance in the US for her vinyls funnily Taylor's re-issue of Red sold even more (112K) ;)
November 29, 20214 yr Radio are going to play old Xmas songs regardless of whether they're in the charts. Just star out any Xmas song not released this year
November 29, 20214 yr Radio are going to play old Xmas songs regardless of whether they're in the charts. Just star out any Xmas song not released this year I'd give them three years to chart before been starred out, in line with the permanent ACR rule. Add in a clause that anything older that has never previously charted in the Top 40 is free to chart, that allows for the possibility of a forgotten hit getting proper attention for the first time.

November 29, 20214 yr There's only been one re-issue of 'Red'... :P @1465229046032203783 Interesting to note that this particular chart stat is surprisingly female dominated - 7 of the top 10 are female artists, all of those being released since the Billboard rule change that has allowed 'vinyl sales' to reach high numbers like this again. (Notably before that most vinyl sales ended up not actually registering as vinyl sales because they were sold as bundles which counted as digital sales instead, hence the lack of 'folklore' on the list for example). The only post rule change album by a male artist to make this list is Paul McCartney just scraping in at #10. (The older albums on the list are Jack White's 2014 album at #7 and Pearl Jam's 1994 album at #8 in case the titles aren't familiar). Kind of expected Adele to be #1 on this pretty easily given the sheer volume of vinyls they pressed for it (and it did beat the overall pure sales Taylor got) but it seems they just severely overestimated the demand for the album on vinyl specifically oops.

Were Mariah and co getting as much airplay in December of say 2001 as now when they weren't charting and we had battles for xmas #1. I'd be willing to bet they weren't.
November 29, 20214 yr The 'version' that was released a couple of weeks ago which is the only 'version' it could possibly be referring to? I'm not sure what is unclear xx
November 29, 20214 yr I think Taylor Swift will sell 10k this week. Her sales are going to be OK for the third week in the UK Charts. The signed albums are going along great.
November 29, 20214 yr Baby It's Cold Outside there isn't anything wrong with that song at all. It's the most bizarre of the Christmas song lyrical content criticisms.

Not to undermine Taylor's numbers but I want to know does she sell good amount of vinyls outside of release week? I think and hope that Adele she could still pull good numbers especially with Xmas weeks upon us. Any information regarding biggest selling album on vinyls? (21st century obviously)
