The OCC look back at 2004:

There's only one possible response to this list of 100 songs turning 20 next year: "2004, what a time to be alive!"

The first new Number 1 of the year was Michelle McManus' Pop Idol winner's single All This Time, which topped the Official Singles Chart for three straight weeks after being released in January. Once Pop Idol was succeeded by The X Factor, it became standard practice for winners' singles to drop in December just in time for the annual festive chart battle. In fact, from 2005 and 2014, seven Christmas Number 1s in 10 years were claimed by the latest X Factor winner.

Anyway, back to 2004. It was a year where four beloved artists – Busted, Britney Spears, McFly and Usher – claimed two Number 1s apiece. Busted reached the top with Who's David and their double A-side release Thunderbirds/3AM, while Britney scored Number 1s with her iconic dance-pop banger Toxic and gorgeously haunting ballad Everytime – that's what we call range.

Meanwhile, McFly gatecrashed the mainstream in style by reaching Number 1 with their first two singles – the perky pop nuggets 5 Colours in Her Hair and Obviously – and then scoring a Number 1 album with their debut, Room on the 3rd Floor. Like Britney, Usher displayed his range by making Number 1 with a club banger (Yeah!) followed by a more reflective ballad (Burn).

Other notable Number 1s included Eamon's scathing break-up bop f*** It (I Don't Want You Back) and Frankee's equally salty answer record F.U.R.B. (f*** You Right Back). Though Frankie claimed at the time to be his real-life ex, Eamon insisted this was just a clever marketing ploy. "I have never met Frankee and she is definitely not my girlfriend or ex-girlfriend," he told MTV News at the time. "The only way I was associated with [her song]was when I was asked for licensing permission by Frankee's representatives, which makes me a writer on her song by copyright law."

The final Number 1 of the year was a much more family-friendly effort: Do They Know It's Christmas? by Band Aid 20, the third iteration of the charity supergroup following 1984's original team-up and 1989's Band Aid II. Performers who featured on the 2004 recording of Do They Know It's Christmas? included Busted, Sugababes, Dizzee Rascal, Coldplay's Chris Martin, Beverley Knight, Dido, Jamelia, Joss Stone and Will Young. Their collaborative single went on to spend four weeks at Number 1 – just one less than the 1984 version managed.

Meanwhile, 2004 also yielded some absolutely classic Number 2s – among them Girls Aloud's The Show and Love Machine, Rachel Stevens' Some Girls, Kelis' Milkshake and Kylie Minogue's I Believe in You. On top of this, it brought the Official Singles Chart debut of The Killers' Mr Brightside, which has gone on to spend more weeks in the Top 100 than any other song in history. We'll say it again: what a time to be alive!

Just looking at the chart toppers: 3 absolute classics in Toxic, Lola’s Theme and Yeah!

A few other really good ones like These Words, Take Me To The Clouds Above, Vertigo and Everytime.

But also a huge shower of rubbish. :D Overall you have to say the quality had really slipped since 2000, as well as sales going through the floor.

I'm no Britney stan but she has the best 2 #1s of the year hands down

Only the OCC could discuss 2004 without mentioning Anastacia at all.

The singles charts are a poor indication of what was popular at the time anyway. People weren’t buying singles, they were buying albums and there were lots of classics in that regard back in 2004.

But as usual, the OCC only focuses on the singles chart and more specifically no.1s.

One of the peak eras of my chart music listening tbh! LOOOOVE this year. 2004-2009 is my favourite period.

Oh wow, I didn't actually realise Lose My Breath was 20 years old?! Still sounds SO fresh to me personally, an absolutely HUGE track that never lets up.

Left Outside Alone is another all time fave here.

Scissor Sisters having the EOY #1 album that year is so fabulous  as for the #1 hits - 'Toxic' and 'Lola's Theme' are two of my favourites of the noughties.

20 years ago, though... :drama: I'd say 2005 is when my early signs of chart geekery were creeping in, thanks to the Now series, but very much remember a lot of this year musically as well.

This was the year I first remember actively listening to the Sunday chart show and I have vivid memories of it being the week that Lola's Theme was #1.

LMB is so timeless! It's incredible. Definitely my favourite Destiny's Child song!
Toxic top single, Scissor Sisters top album for me. As it was a terrible year for me personally for the second in a row, I have no rose-tinted spectacles, but there is a mix of top classics versus a load of rather mundane chart stuff. Pretty much par for the course then! Quite a few of the chart-toppers I can happily never hear ever again and quite a few are fabulous. :)

A forgotten classic right there!

yeah, such a shame it bombed right out the chart within a month of its entry and was never heard of again

20 years? Wow! Can still remember it clearly.

It does make me feel slightly though. I was starting the 10 at high school.

My favourite period in UK charts (1999-2003) is over and YVA started their glorious music career only in 2005 year.

I don't know which retro year will be the next in my "Gražios Dainos" cycle after 2003. 2004 is the one of possible options (others are 1974, 1989 and 1994).

On the first looking...

Album of the year : Mango - Raskila

It's their best LP and the one from the most important Lithuanian pop albums.

Best track : Vaikyste

Single of the year : Courtney Love - Mono

Yes, it's not "Toxic", "Show" and even not "Give You One For Christmas ". A little bit unpredictable choice, but it's the second most successful rock entry in all history of my chart (# 1 is LaFee - Prinzesschen).

Illegal cover version of "Dragostea Din Tei" also was big hit in Europe.

(# 1 in Austria and Sweden, # 2 in Germany and Switzerland, # 4 in Netherlands and Norway, # 7 in Denmark)

Much preferred Kylie's Red Blooded Woman to Britney's Toxic at the time and still do - there was a lot of media hype about both songs at the time I remember, like it was to be a chart battle.

You forgot one song in the list danG. Its a nostalgic favourite of mine. I won't give it away.....

Both are songs that i dont really rate from either, both have far far better singles.
