Okay I'm interested in where you all go when visiting the cinema!

My local cinema is an Odeon so that's where I go, it's a Luxe as well so it is a pretty nice one with big screens and recliners etc. I do have an Odeon card which I feel like I've made my entire personality since I got it a couple of years ago  I probably would still go to Odeon even if I didn't have the card and it wasn't as local although I do really like the Vue that's in Glasgow. I find I enjoy the experience of going to the cinema a lot more with the card, just having the freedom to go whenever I want to as often as I want to without worrying about the cost as if I see at least one film a month I've had my monies worth! I used to very rarely buy a drink or snacks at the cinema before I had the card and would just bring stuff in but now I'll at least get a giant drink and sometimes some popcorn (salted of course x) since in my head my cinema ticket is free so I can afford to spend on that :kink: It still feels like a special treat the way it did when I was a kid getting cinema popcorn so it makes the experience that little bit more enjoyable for me

Anyway I love the cinema, I use it as a place to escape to a lot. I wanna know your relationship with your cinema though? I assume most of you will go often like me but I know a lot of people are a lot more casual about it and maybe only go if there's a really good film out etc

Exclusively cineworld (until recently, it was the only major cinema in our town). Have had an unlimited card since whenever Toy Story 3 was released (2010?). Don't really go to the cinema as much these days, but we try to go once or twice a week (that's very dependent on what's out that we want to see though!). Did used to see literally everything though!

Sweet and salted... Hannah Montana popcorn plz

Showcase (I work there )

I frequent a few others too: Cineworld (for IMAX releases); Savoy Cinemas & Broadway Cinema.

My Cineworld trips won't be happening any more after my last trip there tomorrow... they've announced that the Nottingham branch will be closing due to rent! :drama:

EDIT: Working for a cinema for 14 years kinda puts you off Popcorn a little bit  However, I don't say no if I'm offered it... unless it's salted. Salted popcorn is horrendous! I actually opt for Caramel/Toffee if I was to choose popcorn!

We basically only have Vue, there is a small Odeon in town and some independents that show certain films so I go to those if they are showing things I like, the Vue not far from me is decent. They closed Showcase in town which was by far the best but we’re getting a new Odeon this year apparently so we’ll see. Vue by me is fine anyway and with O2 it’s cheap as anything as well, it’s not the most bougie and I don’t think they’ve touched it in about 10-15 years lmfao but it does the job for the price.

Popcorn is absolutely f***ing rancid in all forms like eating polystyrene 🤢

Didn’t know until reading your post Jonjo that Cineworld was closing, that’s a big loss to the city centre :( I go there sometimes so that’s really sad to read, Showcase isn’t really a viable option for me because of where it’s located

We have an Odeon where I live but it’s a small one so doesn’t show anything aside from the major films. On the plus side it’s only £5 these days

Cineworld for me, or else I have to travel into Bournemouth which is too much hassle, though the Odeon there is lush and new and Cineworld is tired-looking and staffed by a few young people, with huge queues at busy periods/holidays. I'm guessing that's how they keep on surviving closures as if they go so will all the food eateries at Tower Park - rent deals I expect as the landlord will get sod all if the pizza KFC's etc go.

Cineworld, as I’ve been a member for about ten years. We have a big 16 screen cinema in the city centre which shows most things. I am nervous about the closures though, especially after hearing the huge Nottingham one wasn’t safe and the fact my home town Cineworld in Bedford closed last year :(

If Cineworld isn’t showing something, then we go to the local independent cinema as a treat. We wouldn’t really go to another chain unless we were in another city or something but then we’re not usually watching films on our holidays. I’d like to go to the indie ones more, or Everyman as it’s such a nice experience, but moviegoing really does cost a fortune nowadays.

What's the issue with it being staffed by young people, everyone has to start somewhere?

My local Cineworld is convenient, so I go there most often, but sadly this is one that is closing as well :( apparently being replaced by an Odeon at some point.

Team sweet popcorn all the way x

I used to go to Cinnemaxx which is a chain owned by Vue and has the same branding fonts etc. I used to go to Vue when I lived in Salford Quays so it’s a nice little reminder of home. Now that I’ve moved we use UCI Luxe which is an Odeon brand I believe. It is expensive but we got a discount via my boyfriends gym membership that made it reasonable. He’s changed gyms now so god knows where we will go if we find anything worth watching

Showcase, very convenient to get to for me in my town, just a short drive in the car. Always been a roomy cinema and good value if you go on Monday nights with their Insider programme - I saw Nosferatu there last night.

Depends where I am of course, I went to Cineworld over Christmas as that was the one that had the film we wanted to see while at my parents.

Other - Picturehouse! I was so sad that my local one closed down in August (very sad this seems to be a trend </3), it's one of the only places that shows some of the best indie flicks and has respectable cinema-goers. My local's now a Vue, but despite the convenience and the comfortable reclining seats, it's always packed and attracts people that are clearly not there for the movies and more the social experience...who can sod off x I don't mind honestly just travelling to a nearby Picturehouse as it's always a great experience. Odeon is a bit here and there again depending on how busy the screening is and actually there's no Cineworld's near me so haven't been able to take advantage of them yet.

I have a membership with Picturehouse but deciding whether to renew as I did get a year's subscription to BFI so it might not be worth having both just for the costs as both would require travel.

I don't tend to eat while watching a film, and particularly as it's ludicrously overpriced and huge, but all about sweet popcorn x

Mine is currently an Odeon (I get a free Vitality ticket per month) - but my local Odeon is being demolished.....my free ticket will now be used at either a Vue or another Odeon when I go into the office.

I also run a queer film club at my local Filmhouse

I tend to take food with me (so much cheaper) but at my local filmhouse they do Mint Choc Chip ice cream, ginger beer and cheese/jalepeno popcorn so I get those a lot!

Cineworld has been my go to for about 10 years and I am a member there still, though I don’t seem to go as often as I used to. I have started to go to a Picture House since one opened in Chester.

Sweet popcorn for me.

Oh forgot to pledge my allegiance to a popcorn type... it's the sweet/salty mix for me, although it's rare that I have it when watching a film.

I also forgot to mention the lovely Broadway cinema in Nottingham, I go there more than the Cineworld as it's independent and shows a great variety of films.

Up until we recently we only had a Showcase but an Odeon opened in Peterborough City Centre in November with an IMAX screen so it's now my go to because it's convenient and closer to home, has a wider seat range catering to various budgets etc.. Showcase has a brilliant Insider deal on a Monday though so if the timings work out it is still good to go there.

P.S. I am an avid solo cinema goer, would really recommend

My area has both Cineworld (which has IMAX and 4DX screens) and odeon luxe but as I’m an unlimited member, I go Cineworld but I do sometimes go to odeon if there’s a film I really wanna watch and Cineworld aren’t showing it or doesn’t have any suitable show times

What's the issue with it being staffed by young people, everyone has to start somewhere?

I didn't say it was an issue, it was just descriptive. Nothing wrong with it per se at all, but it shows they are generally low-paid jobs (my niece worked for one chain - before it closed last month - when she's not at Uni). Just like I started in factories shifting boxes or stuffing rolls into bakery bags. Not highly paid. The end result: you get a fluid workforce who will happily leave at short notice for a better-paid job and very long lines as 2 or 3 of 'em try to cope with masses of people wanting tickets and popcorn. During the weekdays it's great for old people. cheaper tickets, no queues, 2 members on staff on duty, one for the popcorn tickets and one for spare, don't even get the tickets checked. So I don't go at weekends or evenings if I can help it, I only went last time on a Saturday as a treat for my 10-year-old great nephew to see The Wild Robot! Fine if you enjoy standing in line for 20 or 30 minutes though but he was getting very bored and agitated and there's no mobile signal inside to do it online while you wait. promises of sweets and drinks coming up was my solution :teresa:

I've had a Cineworld Unlimited card for over 10 years, got it as soon as I moved to London, and I grew up with Cineworld being the chain in my hometown. There are four branches in London that I can get a direct train to, my nearest is Wembley but that one only tends to show the big releases as they do a lot of Bollywood/South Asian releases as well and it only has 9 screens. I've started going to Leicester Square more frequently as most of the screens (aside from the IMAX and Superscreen) have only 3-5 rows of seats and I've been liking the intimacy.

My nearest cinema though is actually a Vue and I've been a few times over the past year as it's good at showing the smaller releases and sometimes is just more convenient with the times and how close it is. £6.99 for the cheapest seats at Vue isn't bad at all, and I've recently upgraded my Monzo account to the Perks tier which gives you a free ticket for Vue each month, so I think I'll be making use of that whilst still getting my moneys worth from Cineworld.

I prefer to take snacks/drinks to the cinema to save money (or not to have anything at all - I'm more selective with what I go to see these days so don't feel like I need any snacks to help get through what will ultimately be a rubbish movie), if I do get popcorn it's more often toffee or salted caramel. But I'm team sweet over salted, okay with a mix but I would never get just salted.

One thing I hate about cinemas is when they don’t show some films or they’ll only keep some of those films at the cinema for a week yet there’s films that came out 2-3 months ago and are still in the cinemas ie. Paddington and Wicked
