Recently Michael Buble seems to have become as much as a certainty for the Christmas album number 1 as Wham are for the singles. But do Christmas albums have relevance any more in the streaming era of playlists? Pretty much everyone has an favourite Christmas song but does anyone here have a favourite Christmas album? Maybe one made up of cover versions, original songs or perhaps a mixture, soundtrack albums or collectives? I’d be interested to see any recommendations you have!

My own favourite would be ‘The Gritterman’ by Orlando Weeks (from the band the Maccabees) and narrated by Paul Whitehouse. It’s a lovely gentle album and story (with illustrations) but with really beautiful songs. Quite reflective and bittersweet, a bit like my favourite pop Christmas song, Greg Lake’s Father Christmas, or my favourite carol, In The Bleak Midwinter. It’s well worth a listen.

  • Yeh it’s reallly great! Gonna listen to it through this season I think!

As they both by Kelly im gonna say both wrapped in red and when christmas comes around

But I do love Leonas christmas with love and Lady As on this winter night

This is probably my all-time favourite Christmas-related album:

Love that The Ronettes' version of 'Sleigh Ride' from this project has been a U.K. top 40 staple since 2019 and still reached a new peak last year *.*

Yeh I have the Phil Spector album on vinyl.

My favourite recent Xmas albums are the Goo Goo Dolls one from 2023 It’s Christmas All Over Again and strangely enough the Gary Barlow The Dream of Christmas one from 2021 which is fantastic. A mix of covers and new songs.

Oh forgot The Killers - Don’t Waste Your Wishes - does it count as a compilation?

Fruitcake by Sabrina Carpenter

Christmas & Chill by Ariana Grande

They are literally the only Christmas EP's i listen to repeatedly. An album is way too much Christmas for me

Kelly Clarkson's two albums - Wrapped In Red & When Christmas Comes Around. Just SOOOO good.

I enjoy Leona's Christmas album too.

However, Tinashe's EP Comfort & Joy is possibly the only Christmas album that is front to back perfection for me. The way she managed to curate traditional Christmas hymns into full blown, fully produced, slick, R&B songs... her creative mind never ceases to amaze me! Just flawless.

'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'? HELLO!!!

'Angels we Have Heard on High'? HELLO!!!

'O Holy Night'? HELL-TF-O!!!!!! HER VOCALS?? One of my favourite vocal performances in recent years. Just sublime.

Her version of 'Last Christmas' is pretty much the only one I go to nowadays too...

My favourites:

The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys' Christmas Album

Ben Folds - Sleigher

Bowling For Soup - Merry Flippin’ Christmas

Dolly Parton - A Holly Dolly Christmas

Dolly Parton - Home for Christmas

John Denver - Rocky Mountain Christmas

John Williams - Home Alone (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Kacey Musgraves - A Very Kacey Christmas

Louis Armstrong - Louis Wishes You a Cool Yule

Michael Ball & Alfie Boe - Together at Christmas

Pokemon Christmas Bash

Slade - Crackers

Smash Mouth - The Gift of Rock

Sufjan Stevens - Songs for Christmas

Train - Christmas in Tahoe

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Christmas Eve and Other Stories

Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas

Although I still have The Pretty Reckless to listen too. The Futureheads one is great, their interpretation of some classics is class!

Leona's is a really great one, it has a mix of classics that she did a good job with and enjoyable originals - can play it from start to finish without wanting to reach for the skip button.

I'd say Gwen Stefani's album is pretty underrated, it has a nice retro feel to it!

Both Kelly Clarkson Christmas albums are strong.

Mariah's Merry Christmas is a classic. I like the original tracks (particularly... well, it's obvious which one kink ) and she does the traditional covers beautifully.

In regards to strong female vocalists, Celine Dion's is a very pleasant listen.

Girls Aloud's bonus disc of Christmas hits (which as of this year is now its own separate release!) is a lot of fun; I love all four original tracks (three uptempos that are as quirky as you'd expect Girls Aloud to be) plus a lovely ballad - one of their best ballads imo. The covers are fine, enjoyable enough!

There's a good Christmas album in Kylie Christmas somewhere... but I find it to be very bloated, and some of the covers are total misfires for me. I created my own playlist of favourites from it to make it a better personal listening experience.

As you can tell, I prefer to spend my Christmas with female vocalists. kink But I do have time for Michael Bublé's album, I prefer a few of his covers over the originals.

He's only actually been Christmas album #1 once - in 2011!

He tends to get to the top in the chart week after Christmas.

"A Charlie Brown Christmas" is obviously the crème de la crème 🎄 and you can't go wrong with the Sufjan Stevens albums

usually Hybrid Kids' "Claws" and Aqua Teen Hunger Force's "Have Yourself a Meaty Little Christmas" will get at least one spin a year now 👀

Of course, sorry😆! Should have said number 1 each year around Christmas!

These are mine:

The Carpenters - A Christmas Portrait

Angelis - Angelis

I give you the recorded debut of one Jon Bon Jovi.

I don't know that many tbh but I have listened to Tori Amos' Midwinter Graces a lot during the season. I also like her four-song Christmas EP called Christmastide.
