Thank the lord Sweet Caroline is out, I hate it with all my soul. Already bracing myself for blocking out those heinous 'BA BA BA' shouts this summer x

  • 'The Windmills of Your Mind' is the first of my votes to drop out! Wonderful psychedelic imagery, piano and strings. The vocal performance is charming too.

I've been revisiting The Black Parade a lot since reviewing the #1 hits of 2006.

'Famous Last Words' is my second favourite track on the album after the epic 'Welcome to the Black Parade', of course. So another great single choice from the era. Those two songs go hand-in-hand in my mind as the music videos are a continuation from each other.

I would've liked 'Famous Last Words' to progress further but did suspect it would fall short

29. Orange Juice - Rip It Up 217pts

Writer - Edwyn Collins

Top points - Jaz13music 25, AH Gold 24, chartjack2 24

Scottish band Orange Juice had nine top 75 singles but this was the only one to reach the top 40. After the group split up in 1985, Edwyn Collins had a top 5 hit with 'A Girl Like You' ten years later.

26. Bjork - Hyperballad 227pts

Writer - Bjork

Top points - dandy* 25, Borza 25, DaTilt 24

This was Bjork's third and final top 10 hit with all three of them coming from her second solo album 'Post'. The song in 25th place also has a score of 227 points so Hyperballad misses out on a place in the final on a tie-break.

That's 19 of my 25 through, very happy! Shame Many Of Horror and especially Famous Last Words didn't have enough legs...

18 of my 25 through, but 'Many Of Horror' is the biggest loss from my first round vote so far. A real shame to lose 'Hyperballad' on a tiebreak too, will be very interested to find out which song won that one!

I think Exile was my biggest loss, that's way better than some of the modern tracks that made it in! I also enjoy Many of Horror and Famous Last Words.

Mine were dropping like flies originally, but I’ve only lost one in the last 10 I think. Surprised to see ‘Many of Horror’ drop out.

But impressed that 15 of my top 25 made it through, but that also means that of the 25 to make the final, I voted for the 15 of them - which seems a high proportion.

Edit: oops - I actually lost at least a couple between 30 and 35 too.

'Rip It Up' is good, the first song to use what would become the acid house style bassline. Orange Juice not to be confused with Oran "Juice" Jones who had a 1986 hit.

'Life For Rent' is melancholy but a good song.

Gutted that Hyperballad didn't make it through, it's an absolutely amazing track

Oh, lost 3 in that last batch! I almost got my favourite (and wildcard), ‘Rip It Up’ “, into the final but pleased and surprised it got so far. Perfect pop IMO, that heavily influenced Franz Ferdinand’s career.

Got 17 of my votes through though, which is pleasing.

Shame to lose 'Life For Rent' but at least we still have an even better rent-related song to come smile

Only 7 out of the top 15 I voted got through, but I'm not surprised obviously!

Famous Last Words was my last one to leave.

Oh poor brave 'Hyper-ballad' losing out on a tiebreak 🥺 one of my big losses along with Taylor and MCR. That Dido song is good too.

I think that's 19 of my votes through then.
