I don’t think it matters? She’s the lead (or co-lead) artist on both of them. Pretty sure not many people bought Hips Don’t Lie for Wyclef Jean!

Considering he had multiple chart hits up until that point to say noone bought it because of him is an incredible disservice and he definitely enhanced the track as well

He hadn’t had a top 10 hit since 2001 and his only chart entry at all since then has been thanks to Raksu

Edit: also I said “not many” not “no one” x

By your own argument shakira had only had 1 top 10 in the "same timeframe"

It's fair to say Wyclef was part of Hips Don't Lie's success because he's not just a small part of the song. That said, a lot of the success has to be put to Shakira too so let's not downplay her own success. The Oral Fixation era hadn't set the charts alight at that point but Don't Bother had still been a top 10 hit just 3 months before.

The song is definitely one that speaks for itself, though, given it ended up being bigger than the sum of its parts.

If you asked me to name the feature on Shakira's Hips Don't Lie I woulda been stumped!!

'Hips Don't Lie' was a real surprise hit at the time! Obviously it seems strange to think of it like that now, but prior to its release it wasn't expected to do much!

I'm still mostly in favour of a low life-time stream cap per user, but something (probably less feasible) could measure users who have chosen to add a song to their library - obviously re-add would be excluded/duplicate versions. That could cause chaos around big album release weeks though, so maybe the label could nominate post album singles as and when (with restrictions to how often), with album track adds counting to the album chart? 🤣 I dunno lol

Just a reminder that the effect of a hard-cap would probably not accomplish what you expect. There's no particularly strong evidence to suggest that these older hits are actually resting on egregiously greater person by person streams, and in many cases it might be the opposite. These songs chart so well because they're so well known that they have a huge audience to bounce around the burden of maintaining their streaming numbers. New music is generally starting from the ground up and has a much smaller potential audience to utilise. An audience that is very likely jumping off them to hear the latest new stuff (it's me, just about to finish all of New Music Friday as I type this, I will never hear most of these songs ever again).

I've made and now nested several posts about this! (Today's thrilling update, "Ordinary"'s ratio has gone from 10 to 10.5 in the last 8 months)

For similar reasons, the notion of these older songs having more passive listeners is something I'm not convinced of. I'd sooner believe it's a lot of new music that's overstepping reality thanks to aggressive algorithms and label pushes to get people to try out these new sounds (and also some songs of late whose success looks very suspicious).

Well I’m not sure what you mean but that’s just not true no matter how you put it lol Don’t Bother was a #9 hit before Hips Don’t Lie (albeit that didn’t take much in 2006), and she’s had plenty of chart entries since then

She didn’t release anything in this country in that time period heehee I don’t know what vendetta you have against Shakira. Out of the 4 singles she had released before Hips Don’t Lie, only one missed the top 10. Jumping on a technicality that both of her #1s were collaborations doesn’t discredit her success in any way

I have zero vendettas 🤭 I was literally her biggest supporter for zoo going top 40 on here your the one thats started something because I said I was suprised she hadn't had a completely solo number 1 , id of bet money that whenever wherever had gone number 1 🤔 but I was wrong

‘Hips Don’t Lie’ was a massive success because it’s a great track.

People didn’t buy it because of Shakira or Wyclef. They bought it because they loved the track. Or you could say it’s because it was a great collaboration.

Whenever Wherever was really high in the year-end chart and the decade-end charts. If it missed #1 it is probably because it got unlucky and blocked by an even higher-selling song I would assume. Even if it technically isn't a #1, the statistics say it's a "#1-sized hit".

And Beautiful Liar was kind of a 3-way collab with the Freemasons. I heard the (amazing) Freemasons remix way more than the original at the time.

'Whenever, Wherever' had one of the biggest gaps between #1 and #2 ever, it was released the same week as Will Young's Pop Idol coronation single so it never stood a chance. I don't recall what kind of sales it did but I imagine probably enough to have been #1 on plenty of other weeks?

The song was actually a Wyclef song called Dance Like This retooled for Shakira so he definitely didn't play a small part in it, it wouldn't exist without him.

I love his part on the track, both him and Shakira were integral to its success, and the version Heart play that cuts a lot of him out feels half empty to me.

And yes, Whenever, Wherever got super unlucky and could have released a week earlier to beat Westlife's World Of Our Own. It definitely sold over 100k first week.

Shakira deserved to have so many more hits but she has done well considering the number of English singles she has released compared to Spanish is pretty low. To be having top three hits with a span of 24 years is impressive for anyone, but her first Spanish hits were in the mid 90s (Antología, Inevitable, Ojos Así, Dónde Estan Los Ládrones, Estoy Aquí, i could go on - all wonderful). And then La Tortura, Chantaje and so many more since her English breakout.
