Monday at 22:242 days The other issue with new entries becoming rarer, is that the UK singles chart which was known for its variety. has lost what made it special. There was something for everyone and all genres, musical tastes. But with only 1 new entry and that from Gracie Abrams who already had other songs in the top 100 and last week 3 new entries, how can people latch onto new artists and discover new music. I do think a review is necessary or Mr Brightside will be in the charts this time 10 years later! I do think first week streams should be weighted higher or older songs continually reduce their stream value every few weeks.

Tuesday at 09:031 day The thing is the charts are not meant to show what’s new or fresh they are meant to show what’s popular.There is a major issue at the moment with newer artists seemingly not connecting with audiences - but I think that’s a bigger issue as how can new artists get their music out there to the masses, radio and TV is not as effective as it used to be, and plonking a song on a streaming playlist is not the answer - it might create inflated streams and maybe a chart entry but not convinced it’ll help long term.

It's crazy that only three artists this year have reached the top ten for the first time (Bella Kay, Prospa & Cloonee and ANOTR feat. 54 Ultra). Labels and A&R are surely absolutely tearing their hair out at the state of things, nothing is connecting outside of the big superstar releases, and even then many of those are underperforming against expectation too so we're stuck with old revivals and the same song at No.1 all year, it's actually crazy. Of those, Doechii, Alex Warren and sombr already have more than one top 10 hit, while Skye Newman has another couple of hits and Sleep Token had a #1 album (and HUNTR/X obviously had other hits from the film). It already feels like Bella Kay's hype has died down as her album's made no splash at all, and time will tell if Prospa or ANOTR can score any future hits I guess.
Tuesday at 11:101 day I think there are multiple factors here-Fragmentation of the market. You can listen to any song ever made basically. You can have record consumption but they aren't listening to new stuff-Expansion of the audience base. Downloads came out and it was millennials on their PCs downloading from itunes. The chart was controlled by younger people for a LONG time. But streaming is really available to everyone from 10-60 now. That changes things. People with jobs and kids don't have as much time to find new music. They put on what they know and like. Music becomes background noise.-The streaming model being repetitive. You are charting how often things are listened to, even passively, rather than the active choice to buy. I don't see how we get around that.As for the charts maybe they need a rethink. Top 40 has always been the gold standard because that is what was considered to be what the market supported. In the US, its a bigger country, top 100.But with the diversification of the market and audience perhaps top 40 is a bit restrictive?

Tuesday at 13:551 day I believe it would be good to start something like a retro chart where all songs having reached the top 40 more than one year ago are included. These songs would then not appear in the main charts and would make way for much more place for new stuff - particularly the christmas chart would be cleared. Still older songs can appear in the main chart if they did not reach the top 40 before.

Still older songs can appear in the main chart if they did not reach the top 40 before.I don’t disagree something needs to be done but creating more charts just makes a farce of the actual charts - the charts are meant to represent the most popular tracks not the newest, current/new artists, songs that haven’t made the Top 40 before etc.,We’ll end up with Billboard style charts with one for every genre and exclusion.

Tuesday at 15:061 day I think along with the drastic changes to the industry meaning the charts are being dominated by select artists, social media and streaming giants which has never been seen before, I just think it's too hard for new artists to break through with the economy as it is and cost of living skyrocketing, record labels are at risk of going bust if they don't get results and streaming services don't half take advantage of smaller artists, and that's not even taking AI into the equation. Unless you've got industry connections, are a highly marketable prospect or managed to build a small following, it's really hard for up and coming artists. The live/touring circuit is more likely where a lot of the money is these days.I suppose 2026 has lacked a huge undeniable pop culture moment like Brat, K-Pop Demon Hunters etc. or headline-grabbing phenomenon artists like Sabrina Carpenter or Chappell Roan, Could still happen I guess, these things do tend to take us all by surprise.
