Typically how long should each semi last? I know there's no formula for this as numbers change every contest, but let's assume it's 28 per contest... and it's two hours in length... then that gives each participant 4:28 to showcase their entry. Some will be less than this and some will be more, but if the overall semi length exceeds a set time perhaps encourage some of the longer entries to be reconfirmed to shorter ones (or send a radio edit) for the average listeners and then a link to the extended versions for those wanting a more deeper experience. Just a thought, probably unachievable but it's something.

I only listen to a long songs in full if it captivates me after the first couple of minutes. You gotta earn those extra minutes

Is this serious? I'm genuinely asking because if so, can I withdraw please?

Mods - I am being 100% serious btw. So please just let me know. Thank you.

I don't mind long entries being entered ofc. But I feel that there is a limit for me personally, especially when we have to listen to so many songs at once etc.. I don't mean for this to sound rude at all. People can enter a track however long they like, but I'd rather know so I can withdraw and not partake.

Sorry if this comes off as boring/miserable.

I don't intend to withdraw... But I'm kinda in the same camp... I don't think I've ever enjoyed a song longer than 10 minutes long, and it's pretty rare for me to care for anything longer than about 6 minutes.

As Hennessy says, it really sometimes feels like a competition to send the longest song (and the discussion around these seems to establish a long song as a badge of honour), but I almost always prefer to move onto something different and different fairly quickly! (On top of that, most of the 6 min+ songs that have been entered this year, I really haven't enjoyed)

As an example... There are plenty of long songs from musicals I enjoy in the context of their musical, but generally the ones which I gravitate to listen to outside the musical are the shorter ones!

Maybe I need to start doing this. Maybe flick through to see if it gets any better? đŸ¤£

You know another trick, is use the Spotify/Apple playlist embedded link to preview the songs for about 20 seconds and if you like what you hear then you can listen to the rest of it in full!

My opinion

If someone wants to send a song that long, let them. We all know it will qualify and get high votes from a select number of people - so some people will enjoy it and that’s what it’s all about right?

With that logic you could avoid all the long songs in the semis and wait for them to appear in the final and then listen in full!

When does a song become a long song? At what exact second of the song?

If you say that longer songs will definitely make it to the final, are people voting for the length and the boldness of the choice, or for the song itself?

Are we talking about the same contest? How many of songs over 20 minutes have even been entered overall? They rarely even do well. Not to mention, none ever came close to winning before.

I hardly doubt that one country sending a longer song every once in while is entirely proportional with dramatics like threatening to withdraw over it. It just shows a somewhat shallow view of what a song is supposed to look like. Just skip if your short form content brain isn’t able to handle more than 2:20 of one musical performance at a time. Or, indeed, withdraw.

Yeah, I'm sure there are people that do genuinely enjoy them (I highly doubt that people are voting for songs they don't enjoy). But in the grand scheme of things, surely there aren't proportionally that many long songs that we end up with a few every contest... Which is why it feels like it's a competition to send the longest song (at times) from the perspective of someone that doesn't generally love long songs, rather than the best song.

But people can send whatever they want! I don't lose any sleep, and one contest the longest song might just be my favourite!

A song being judged by its length is a little odd, there's so many different types of what that looks like, techno adventures, rock epics, contemplative sounds, dramatic finishes to an album, experiments, steady unchanging electronic beats etc

It's quite a cool and diverse type of entry to stake your support behind and the intense feelings such a listen gives you is why they often attract high points - though a lot of the time I don't indulge because such songs are often the deep cuts, the rewards for going so deep into an artist's discography while BJSC by its very nature promotes a shallower sampling of a lot of different artists (not necessarily a bad thing!)

since that you're never really voting for more than a third of a field, I don't think I would judge anyone who knows that after they've listened to a good proportion of the song and had an idea of what it's trying to do that it isn't for them simply not spending the time with the rest of if its length was excessive, the artists that record these long songs tend to make them for their biggest fans anyway.

Are you talking about the people reacting in here or those sending longer songs (đŸ‘€)?

Are you sure? It’s 4 minutes, that’s way too long.

Taste is subjective, and it feels silly to complain about someone entering something they genuinely like, especially when others might respond to it just as much. Don Salsa was some of the most fun I have ever had with BJSC for example. Realistically it's no different to sitting through 10 songs that all sound the same đŸ–¤

i swear by bjsc constitution that i didn't send long for because it's long x

I do get the simple practical concern that if a couple of songs are going to turn a 2 hour semi into 3 hours that’s a 50% larger investment of time than you might have set aside. At the same time I think it’s nicer if there doesn’t have to be a limit to what is sent.

Separately I very much doubt anyone votes for the long songs just because they’re long, any more than someone would vote for a song just because it’s short.
