I think what this year has proved to me is in the current climate, the name of your band won't get you anywhere. You HAVE to come up with a good lead single or you're basically screwed. Hopefully we'll see some record labels learning about this next year...

Quite right - never mind the previous success, if the lead single is pants and not promoted properly, the whole project is doomed!

I know that KGB is a flop but I think it is because she havent done promotion, the video is c**p and she have realised the album just after 2 singles that missed the Top 10, and Keeps Getting Better isnt a great track is just Ok. I think that she will do the big comeback with her new album. I cant wait!
Biggest this year?, Anastacia. Each studio album has sold around 5 million worldwide each, (with each studio album selling just over 1 million in the UK, (UK Sales, 3.6 million if you include GH), yet Heavy Rotation has failed to even sell 150k, (worldwide!!!).

Sandi Thom did terrible compared to last time round

The Fratellies as well

Anastacia

The Automatic

Will young

Dido (Sadly, but thats what happenes when you dont promote)

Boyzone?

Leon Jackson?

Anyone who isnt a major female singer! I think Females have ruled the charts this year, Leona, Amy Winehouse, Britney, Duffy, Girls Aloud, Amy MacDonald, Katy Perry, Beyonce, Adele, Pink!

Yes

I was watching a Top of the pops from 1968 on BBC4 the other day. Every single one of the top twenty was male!.

Not sure why female talent is recognised more these days, because there were some great female acts in the sixties that never really got chart recognition.

Yes a few female acts charted, but they were by far the minority.

Well there's a lack of big male solo artists at the moment, well, in pop at least. I can only think of Justin Timberlake...
Ummm. No.

In the UK she sold 75k+ the first week, and even though she fell ten places she sold more then 50k her second week. How is that a flop, especially considering it's the best one of her studio albums have done since her sophomore album? Womanizer has also sold just under 200k, and has spent 6 weeks in the top ten, and looks set to have 1-2 more...something she hasn't done since her debut single.

sales > chart positions

Not to mention she has the highest debut worldwide album sales this year for a female artist, selling 816,000 her first week.

Earth calling Tyler...come in from planet brit fanatic please.....your reality'o'meter is dangerously into the RED!!!

75K at @4 on an Xmas period week is completely average i'm afraid ESPECIALLY when you consider where the record is NOW - what is AMAZING is for it to BOMB so far 2 weeks in a row with all those Xmas shoppers looking for stocking fillers, it won't be even top 20 by the end of the week given its history.

I notice Jive has taught you well with all the HALF TRUTHS U R spouting here eg Why not cf 75k to her last album's opening - the one where she she was having the most NEGATIVE publicity of her career, the one released in November before the high sales Circus benefited from ie Blackout #2 = 50k !!!! 75k is hardly a massive increase considering Xmas sales + she DID promo, without those it might have even sold LESS than Blackout's opening week :o

Circus + "best" together only in the mind of a LOON! fanatic - what are all these reviews saying how overfull of FILLER it is? Its hardly surprising when Jive are nothing but a sausage making manufactured 'music' factory with NO quality control - NO half taken seriously/respected mature act/artist releases a full studio album only a year after the previous one - Jive have just slapped any old SH!T together to get an albums worth of songs, so they can capatalize over "Britney - THE TRIUMPHANT RECOVERY™" (the irony being not only did they do nothing to help her in her most desperate time of need they made her worse by forcing her to keep on the tread MILL - GOD will she die if her Kids see those vids - JIVE is just pure heartless GREED + EVIL)

6 wks in the TOP 10 WOOO! WOOOOO! Perhaps you should check out how long some of Madonnas early 80 songs spent in the Top before you treated us to your convenient dearth of UK chart history (that just coincidently always puts the positive spin on Britneys despite the dismal reality ;) ) Britney came on the scene in 99 when the charts were very unstable - it only as downloads have had progressively more impact on the single charts that the nature of the chart has reversed so its not the big acheivement you are trying to make out (with your convenient Uk chart ignorance - oh you are from USA........but have been "studying" the (Britney part of) UK charts for years )

816,000 !!!!! OMG!!!!! I'm in shock! btw her "flop" album you know when everyone hated her - 'Blackout' wasn't it... would you like to tell its equivalent number ? No, you'd prefer to be indenial as usual?! OK I'll have to deal with the "unpleasant" reality you let your life revolve around . The thing is "FLOP" Blackout SOLD 1,000,000 (yes 1 Million in its first week, last year - much more than her "COMEBACK" Circus sold). Things get BLACKER when you find there is ONLY ONE big country where Circus did sell alot more than BLACKOUT - yes her fellow trailer trash etc came out in their DROVES in the USA for her new album which sold about 500K.......As you can see if you take 500k from 816K you get NOT ALOT left to spread around the rest of the world ie Britney only sells records in the US - a "local" artist. Like in the UK, the rest of world see her for the GOSSIP column filling manufactured puppet she unbelievably STILL is...only now she is also a broken soul that will take many years away from the glare of celebrity to fix.

Kanye West is another one. Big lead single but on the album front had flopped as it only went to number 11 and bar The Collage Dropout which went platinum anyway all the others have gone top 2 with at least two big singles. The Collage Dropout (Jesus Walks), ( Late Registration (Diamonds, Gold-Digger), Graduation (Stronger, Homecoming)

Through The Wire & All Falls Down were bigger hits than Jesus Walks I think

I'm so happy with Britney's sales, so I wouldn't call her a "Flop", it's just a classic case of Positions mean nothing compared to sales. Just like many people say Beyonce flopped with her album (Before this week -_-) Just coz her album reached Top 10... It still sold over 30k (For a number 10 album, that's impressive nowadays) and didn't she manage over 30k despite falling the second week in the chart?

lol mk.

Actually, Blackout sold just under 450k worldwide it's first week, so yes please, check your facts again.

So if Blackout sold 450k worldwide, and sold 290k in the US, that means it sold 160k internationally it's first week.

If Circus sold 816,000 worldwide, and sold 505,000 in the US...that means it sold 311k internationally.

OH WAIT A SECOND. That's 215k more in the US! And that's 151k more internationally!? Hmmmmm?

:)

<_< Someone said Alesha has flopped comparing to her last solo efforts aka lipstick and knockdown. She is doing phenomenal plus I bet her album is approaching 100k.

Poor Poor FOB there album is brilliant and PATD totally flopped 2.Keane kind of have flopped also for there super high sales.Iam worried about Lily Allen next year I predict after highish first week sales she will flop hard.

I Hope Mika's new album flops hate him :puke2:

I think its goodbye for Lemar also and Craig david also UK males not doing v well unlike the girls.

Yeah I know but I couldn't think of them then and I could only think of Jesus Walks

Really I think trhere's just a lot of poor material. I haven't bough a single UK/US album this year, for the fact that it's all just $hit.
People's interpretations of flops are very different...

Some of these indie bands like Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs etc. may have not sold well, but they'll still sell out all the arenas they play. Is impossible to say they've flopped really as they're the real winners at the end of the day, not their label...

I think they've flopped, particularly Razorlight and The Feeling, maybe not so much Snow Patrol and Kaiser Chiefs. I think touring "flopping", if theres such a thing, will come later.

Will has gone platinum and held his own in the top 40 albums since his release of let it go back in September. His sales have been a lot slower than previous albums, but he's had a mountain to climb in that radio one haven't supported him at all, and male solo artists - (especially British), are somehow not flavour of the month at the moment. James Morrison has had amazing airplay, but even he, who is considered a bit cool, hasn't gone platinum as yet.

Katy Perry, whilst having had a huge hit single, hasn't sold that many albums. It's albums that are the measure of success, in my opinion as that's where the fanbase and the money really count.

There have been few male solo artists around - Lemar has flopped shockingly. I can't think of any others????

The best british male category at the Brits is going to be interesting!!

^Well i think the UK is slowly turning into Buzzjack then :P

^Yep, both are swimmin with wimmin.

Yes British males aren't doing well at the moment. Maybe next year!

The launch of Bryn Christopher and David Jordan flopped. Taio Cruz has had lots of airplay but hasn't sold that many albums, Leon Jackson is struggling, Will Young doing OK but not great. James Morrison is doing well, but needed a woman to help increase his album sales lol.

As for Lemar and George Sampson well......

It seems difficult for males to be 'cool' enough for Radio One and mainsteam enough for commercial radio. Female singers seem to manage this with ease - Leona, Adele, Duffy, Estelle, Kate Nash, Lily Allen etc.

How can you say JM is doing well & Will just ok when Will has sold quite a few more albums than James Morrison? A successful single doesn't make a succesful artist.

Poor boys... I guess Bryn will get R1 airplay again with the next single unless gave it up...

To David, um... next album?

Good for them. :)

Estelle? Did her album sold as expected? I didn't remember... sorry.
