January 8, 201214 yr Just because there's less dance stuff in the charts right now doesn't mean it's because of Adele. There's ALWAYS a time of the year where dance stuff does better than alternative, and vice versa. The current #1 is a dance record, and we still have LMFAO in the top 10 and 'We Found Love' is still hanging around even with massive sales, plus Taio Cruz is looking like he'll enter the top 5 this week with a generic dance track, and you can guarantee David Guetta will have tons of hits this year with his album. Likewise, we'll have the odd indie track doing well, too. I don't think Someone Like You has has ANY impact on the charts at all (beside the fact it was a huge seller). Yeah, maybe you're right. There were a lot of piano-led ballads late 2010 (and of course Empire State of Mind, Part II) I suppose. You Da One.
January 8, 201214 yr I take it Party Rock Anthem is now a million seller? What a bizarre act to get a song past the milestone considering some of the classic acts that have never managed one! If it isn't then there's a big porkie in this week's commentary
January 8, 201214 yr I have had the 'You Da One' and 'The One That Got Away' mash up on repeat this week, so it is strange to hear 'You Da One' with its original instrumental. I actually prefer this song over the 'The One That Got Away' instrumental, makes it far more fun: oARx5fdxvmo

I agree with Eric in this instance (although I wouldn't used the phrase 'saving pop music'). There's definitely been a LOT more MOR/Ballad type stuff, especially from females, since Adele's BRITs performance of Someone Like You. That was a massive event which helped to define music in 2011 IMO and marked the beginning of the end of club banger domination. Look at the songs we've had so far in the top 40 - all but a few of them are slow songs with 'real' music (as opposed to electronic music). This would never have happened in the year or two before SLY's performance.
January 8, 201214 yr This Rihanna track is so awful that it actually makes me angry. Just what were they thinking going with this for second single? It won't even go top 10, and this is from an artist who has proved time and time again that she can release just anything and it'll sell. Well, this now proves that she CAN'T release just anything and it'll sell. I do think this is one of her songs that deserves good sales though. I really like it. This Sean Kingston song is very generic. Taio Cruz's remix will be #2 most likely aswell.
January 8, 201214 yr I actually don't mind 'You Da One'. The verses and beat is pretty catchy but the chorus is just sooooo average, and the video is shit.

January 8, 201214 yr Its odd with Katy, the songs that miss the top 10 are often better than the ones that make it. Also, still annoyed that Teenage Dream wasn't Number One
January 8, 201214 yr Well, this now proves that she CAN'T release just anything and it'll sell. Yes, hopefully it'll teach whoever was behind this decision not to be so stupid in future.
January 8, 201214 yr So, the big chart news is that Beyonce ISN'T #22. :-) Congrats to her & Jay Z on the Birth of their Daughter Today.

Empire State Of Mind (Part 2), Your Song, You've Got The Love, She's Always A Woman, Let The Sunshine, Sweet Disposition, One Day Like This, Pack Up, Hey Soul Sister, New York, Fireflies were all big hits before the Brits and they weren't dance/electropop. Tons of other hits either. Likewise in the albums chart, we had Plan B dominating in 2010 with a soul album.

January 8, 201214 yr Get it McMorrow, represent that folk music! I hope everyone listens to 'This Old Dark Machine', its less 'high' than Higher Love but equally as stunning.
January 8, 201214 yr The One That Got Away.... very fitting title. It's the only release from this era that "got away" from the top ten in the UK and the #1 spot in the US. :(
