Kid Ink - Show Me starts interesting, but doesn't really go anywhere imo, a bit boring towards the end.

For the "Random Retro" this week, we go back forty years, to a week when two of the perpetual Christmas classics were at their peak:

Week Ending : 22/12/1973

1 (1) Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody

2 (2) Gary Glitter - I Love You Love Me Love

3 (4) New Seekers - You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me

4 (6) Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day

5 (3) Alvin Stardust - My Coo-Ca-Choo

6 (5) Marie Osmond - Paper Roses

7 (24) Leo Sayer - The Show Must Go On

8 (7) David Essex - Lamplight

9 (8) Mott The Hoople - Roll Away The Stone

10 (9) Roxy Music - Street Life

Sidestepping 1971, when "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)" was number one, and 1972 when the top two were "Long Haired Lover From Liverpool" and "My Ding-A-Ling" we arrive at 1973 and one of the Christmas classics topping the chart.

"Merry Xmas Everybody", the third biggest selling Christmas title ever (behind "Mary's Boy Child" and "Last Christmas", although "White Christmas" may have also sold more) was at that time one of a very few records to enter the chart at Number One, and the fifth of Slade's number ones. It gets regularly into the Top 75 each year, and has had two Slade related remakes (a live version from the 1980 Reading Festival credited to Slade & The Reading Choir and a remix credited to Slade vs Flush. Suffice it to say we'll be hearing it next year, the year after, and for years after that.

The same cannot be said about the number 2, as Gary Glitter's criminal record has led to him being ignored and omitted from most 70s reviews. "I Love You Love Me Love" was typical Glitter, a catchy chorus, overblown visual image and not much else, but it was enough for this to also be a million seller.

The New Seekers were formed from the ashes of the 60s group The Seekers, and managed six Top 5 singles, including two number ones, this being the second, early in 1974 with a top 10 run of 7-3-4-3-3-2-2-{1}-5-3-8. Typical early 70s MOR, of which more later.

Back to the Christmas classics at 4 - "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" with the full artist credit being famously "Wizzard featuring vocal backing by The Suedettes plus the Stockland Green Bilateral School First Year Choir with additional noises by Miss Snob & Class 3C" but original copies just say "Wizzard" on the label on both the 1973 original (HAR 5079) and the 1981 re-release (HAR 5173) and only later copies of the latter give the extended credit.

More "Glam" at 5, but perhaps a watered down version. Alvin Stardust featured in last week's 1984 Retro with one of his last hits, this was the first under the Stardust name, and was on the way down after peaking at number 2

I mentioned early 70s MOR above, and one of the biggest purveyors of some of the mushiest of it, was the Osmond empire. The brothers group, Donny solo, Donny & Marie, Little Jimmy, and on this occasion, Marie solo, they were everywhere. "Paper Roses" had been a hit for three different acts in 1960, and was revived here. To be fair, of it's type it's not bad, but you still get the feeling that she would have not had a musical career had she had a different surname

Leo Sayer was only on his second ever week on the chart with a song that would eventually peak at number 2 in the new year. His two number ones were nearly 30 years apart, "When I Need You" in 1977 and "Thunder In My Heart Again" by Meck featuring Leo Sayer in 2006.

David Essex was having the second of his 25 hits, he too would go on to have two number ones (in his case within 12 months of each other) before becoming a West End singer in musicals such as "Evita" and "Mutiny!" he was awarded the OBE in 1999.

Moot The Hoople were a prolific album group that had morphed from late 60s R&B (no real relation to what is known as R&B today) to glam-rock, and despite large amounts of critical acclaim (both at the time and since), don't have many hit singles to their name. "All The Young Dudes" (a David Bowie song) being their best known. This was one of their only two other top tenners.

Finally at number 10 we have perhaps the "thinking man's" version of glam rock, Roxy Music. Led by the suave Bryan Ferry with the innovative Brian Eno creating unusual synthesiser-based melodies (long before electric music became commonplace). "Love Is The Drug", while not a patch on their debut "Virginia Plain", spent 4 weeks in the top 10, and was revived in a remix version in 1996.

In other places, Wizzard front man Roy Wood had a solo record, "Forever" at number 11, Steeleye Span's version of "Gaudete" (recently covered by Erasure) leapt up from 27 to 14, there was more Osmond presence at 15 (Donny) and 19 (the group), and another festive regular, "Step Into Christmas" by Elton John slipped one place to number 26. This week's chart was published as a Top 30 only, but positions 31-50 do appear in some sources, most likely "retro-fitted" the official Top 30.

Great retro choice what a classic Xmas chart with Slade, Wizzard & Elton in the top 40!!

What a random new entry. It's not bad but Chris Brown's presence and the Show Me Love sample doesn't exactly help sell it.
Oh wow, this has done next-to-nothing the past few weeks! Hopefully X Factor can save it tonight if that's what she performs!

Biography

A former Christian artist, Katy Perry rebranded herself as a larger-than-life pop star and rose to prominence during the summer of 2008. Before she topped the charts with songs like "I Kissed a Girl" and "California Gurls," though, she spent the better part of a decade recording music under a different name. Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (or Katy Hudson, as she billed herself on her 2001 gospel album) was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California. Raised in a religious household as the daughter of two pastors, she was forbidden to listen to secular bands as a child, although a childhood slumber party introduced her to the music of Alanis Morissette and Freddie Mercury. Religious music remained at the forefront, however, and Katy released a self-titled Christian album in 2001 under her original name. She would later abandon the genre (and her given surname) in favor of a pop career.

At age 17, she began working with hitmaker Glen Ballard, who had produced and co-written Alanis Morissette's chart-topping Jagged Little Pill in 1995. Several years later, she teamed up with the Matrix, a Grammy-nominated production/songwriting team whose résumé included collaborations with Avril Lavigne, Shakira, and Korn. Tired of producing music for other artists, the Matrix had plans to record an album of their own, with Perry serving as one of the group's two singers. The project was ultimately shelved, but not before Perry appeared in a 2004 write-up by Blender magazine, who hailed her as "the Next Big Thing!"

With the Matrix's unreleased album sitting in the vaults at Sony Records, Perry went back to the drawing board and began working on a solo album for Columbia. The project was eventually canceled, although two of its songs were later given to Kelly Clarkson, who scored a Top 40 hit with "I Do Not Hook Up" several years later. Perry (who, by this point, had shed her original surname due to its similarity to actress Kate Hudson) then signed with Capitol, who encouraged their new client to write her own music and helped establish her image as a boisterous, tongue-in-cheek pop star. Perry's debut single, "UR So Gay," generated a small buzz with its mischievous lyrics and clever music video, but it was "I Kissed a Girl" that proved to be her breakthrough hit, topping the charts in 20 countries and pushing its accompanying album, 2008's One of the Boys, into the Top Ten in America. Perry supported her debut by joining the Warped Tour that summer, where she toured alongside her boyfriend at the time, Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. Meanwhile, "Hot N Cold" became her second multi-platinum hit, "Thinking of You" (one of the album's three songs written solely by Perry) cracked the Top 40, and "Waking Up in Vegas" cracked the Top Ten.

Such success meant that Katy Perry had officially become one of the industry's biggest pop stars, celebrated as much for her outsized behavior and outrageous fashion choices as the music itself. She continued touring through the summer of 2009 (albeit without McCoy, whose boyfriend status had been revoked earlier that year) and found time to tape an installment of MTV Unplugged, which was released in November. Meanwhile, she worked on a new album and started up a whirlwind romance with comedian Russell Brand, eventually becoming his fiancé. Recording sessions for her album wrapped up in early 2010, and Perry scored her second number one single with "California Gurls," which was released that May. The accompanying album, Teenage Dream, followed in August. The album would be reissued in 2012 as Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, with the bonus track "Wide Awake" earning Perry a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Solo Performance. - iTunes

Still not liking this Katy Perry song. Sorry. I'm hoping 'Walking On Air' is the next single. :D

'Unconditionally' So doesn't deserve to do bad at all. :( Hopefully it gets a massive boost following tonight's performance!
Kinda hope Katy trolls us all and performs 'Roar'. (Or, even better, 'Dark Horse', causing that to be Xmas #1 *.*)
Well when Dermot announced who was singing tommorow an image of the unconditonally video came up so that proves she could be singing that
Kid Ink sounds like an artist I'm going to absolutely despise in 2014. Good to see he's started 2 weeks early.

with luck he will be rubbed out before the year has started.

#UnconditionallyforXmasNumber1

This is doing so poorly considering the airplay and TV play it's receiving. I actually prefer it to 'Roar' now, but that's not saying much since I absolutely loathe the latter.

Quick question - was listening to Clyde 1 in work and they had this at #2 (as well as James Arthur in the top #5 with 'Recovery') behind Lily Allen in their chart. How is that even possible? I'm pretty sure it's the Vodafone Big Top 40.

Chance The Rapper in the top 40 YAY.

So Bieber has got 10 top 40 hits from this series - he has 5 new tracks out next week but I don't think any of them will trouble the top 40 as his fans will just download/complete the album.

Biography

Pop singer Justin Bieber was barely into his teens when he released his platinum-selling debut, My World, and became one of 2009's youngest success stories. An Ontario native, Bieber had placed second in a local singing competition two years prior and began posting his performances on YouTube. The videos caught the attention of Scooter Braun, a talent agent and former So So Def marketing executive, who helped Bieber land an impromptu audition with the R&B star Usher. Impressed by what he saw, Usher — along with Island/Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid — quickly signed the 15-year-old Bieber to a recording contract.

Bieber released his first single, "One Time," in May 2009. Supported by a popular video that featured an appearance by Usher, "One Time" went platinum in both Canada and America, a feat that was replicated later that year with the release of My World. The disc was technically an EP, featuring only seven songs, but it reached number six on the Billboard 200 album chart and sold over a million copies. Less than a year after his debut, Bieber returned with the "second half" of My World, a ten-song release titled My World 2.0. Further demonstrating his and his management's marketing power, over 8,000 fans who pre-ordered My World 2.0 had their head shots used in a photo mosaic (formed to look like a portrait of Bieber) that was displayed on the back side of the disc's booklet. The release topped the Billboard 200. A few weeks later, a combination of My World and My World 2.0, titled My Worlds, appeared in some territories.

By the end of 2010, Bieber issued My Worlds Acoustic, a set featuring acoustic versions of nine songs off the My World discs, as well as one new song. The following February, the 3-D documentary Never Say Never was released to theaters. The seven-track Never Say Never: The Remixes, released just days after the film, maintained the flow of Bieber product, and featured appearances from the likes of Kanye West, Usher, and Miley Cyrus. Just in time for Christmas 2011 came the holiday-themed Under the Mistletoe, complete with several celebrity guest duets and an original song, "Mistletoe," for the first single, which entered the Holiday Songs chart at number two. In 2012, Bieber returned with his sophomore studio effort, Believe. Featuring the single "Boyfriend," the album also included guest appearances from Ludacris, Nicki Minaj, Drake, and others. It became his fourth number one album. Believe Acoustic, a sequel to My Worlds Acoustic, followed in 2013. ~ Matt Collar & Andy Kellman, Rovi / iTunes
