February 19, 20187 yr Maroon 5-Moves Like Jagger Will Young-Jealousy Rihanna-SOS Nelly Furtado-Maneater Shakira-Hips Don’t Lie Train-Hey Soul Sister Estelle-American Boy Robyn-With Every Heartbeat (this is surely the biggest example-in the wilderness for 9 YEARS)
February 19, 20187 yr Carly Rae Jepsen! Given her first big hit screamed one-hit wonder. This is going back a bit, but I wouldn'tve predicted Katy Perry becoming as big as she did when she'd just released I Kissed A Girl. Back when she was still doing the grungy/alt-lite pop girl look a la Kate Nash or Lily Allen. Did not seem like someone who'd go on to be one of the A+ list pop girls. Craig David and James Arthur would be two more big ones.
February 19, 20187 yr Craig David has to be the obvious recent example as others have mentioned. Going further back, again as already mentioned, Take That's return was far bigger than anyone could possibly have expected. For another example, I shall go back to before most members were born. Pink Floyd had two hit singles (Arnold Layne and See Emily Play) in the 1960s. After that they had some highly successful albums, particularly Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, but didn't release singles. Then in 1979 they released Another Brick In The Wall Part II and it spent five weeks at number one.
February 19, 20187 yr Bee Gees You Win again in 1987 well outside their big eras! Edited February 19, 20187 yr by Steve201
February 19, 20187 yr Hozier screamed one-hit wonder but he had a second (and far superior) top 20 hit much to my surprise.
February 19, 20187 yr lol Im a big fan of Hozier since day 1, his follow up was decent but not a patch on Take me to church, musically or lyrically
February 19, 20187 yr Yeh Take me to Church was and is his defining hit, prob one of the best songs this decade for me.
February 19, 20187 yr Of those that haven't already mentioned, probably Eliza Doolittle with Big When I Was Little. Pack Up seemed like such a brief novelty and the UK seemed to tire of her quickly after that, pretty much all down to her feature on Disclosure, but it was quite a turnaround. Train I think surprised me the most though, was so random them coming back after nine years of nothing with a song that didn't sound particularly different to their other hits and had such a big hit with it, more surprising still that they would have further success after that!
February 19, 20187 yr Eliza Doolittle is actually still going but she's renamed herself ELIZA now Her Disclosure feature was such an unexpected bop :D
February 20, 20187 yr Blondies ‘Maria’ was one of the biggest for me - 18 years after their last Top 10 hit to come back with a #1 single and Top 3 album was unexpected.
February 20, 20187 yr Blondies ‘Maria’ was one of the biggest for me - 18 years after their last Top 10 hit to come back with a #1 single and Top 3 album was unexpected. And a very welcome return for people who saw them live in 1980
February 20, 20187 yr Crying In The Club —> Minor hit in the UK, flopped elsewhere Havana —> One of the biggest hits of 2017, #1 in UK and USA This surprised me!
February 20, 20187 yr I'm gonna say it out front: The Chainsmokers - Roses one novelty hit and I thought that was it but then came this masterpiece and after that it was history
February 21, 20187 yr I'm gonna say it out front: The Chainsmokers - Roses one novelty hit and I thought that was it but then came this masterpiece and after that it was history Good call actually. Had them pegged as novelty until "Roses" which was excellent.
February 21, 20187 yr Britney - Scream & Shout. Everyone had lost hope a decade before that she would have another UK #1.
February 21, 20187 yr Rita Ora's recent return I think could be one. I honestly thought she was just naturally fizzling out, she hadn't had any major hits in a good 2/3 years, but now she's bagged a string of top 10 hits in quick succession the past 6 months. Craig David is another one if its not already been said, his last top 10 hit must have been in the mid 00s prior to WTBD.
