Let's not pretend Jess Glynne's album underperformed too :drama: Jess' album outsold Ariana's as she had a big Q4 push anyhow (and she's more of a natural album seller in the UK market).

Jess released in Q3 and didnt really push in Q4 :teresa:

Always In Between is the second studio album by English singer and songwriter Jess Glynne, released on 12 October 2018 by Atlantic Records. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart.

October is Q4 :P

I dunno why i thought it was last week in september so my bad  thinks it because it only sold 30k to get number 1, she didnt really push it though, but i dont think it underperformef either.

Whoopsie :P :D

Not denying the success of Sweetener, but I don't think it played a big of a role in the success of "Thank You, Next". I think that was more due to the media storm around Ariana due to the death of Mac shortly followed by her split from Pete. She released the song only a couple weeks after the split iirc.

Both NTLTC and TUN opened with 73k in their respective opening weeks, so she was just as big when she realeased both really, sweetener didnt help but didnt hinder her, it didnt underperform either

That move up to B List on Radio 1 working already I see! Hopefully will pave the way for more dance music in the chart again!

'thank u, next' was released midweek wasn't it? Its first 7 days total would have been a fair bit higher than that of 'no tears left to cry'.

Technically she released it on Saturday

I think what is meant when people mention push is that Jess had a single from the album she was promoting around the time.

Ariana basically gave up on promoting Sweetener/Breathin’ when Thank U, Next dropped. I am sure Sweetener did benefit from Ari having another hit, but not as much as it would had TUN been on Sweetener.

She actually filmed the Breathin video while TUN was being released and then released the video after TUN was released, as the song was doing well everywhere - so the idea she moved on in some massive panic because the era was flopping is silly. I can actually see Sweetener being one of the biggest sellers for an album that only lasted a few months.
She literally did not move on because it was underperforming, that is 100% made up by you. She was at a weird place where she wanted to promote two things at once. She said she was sick of sticking to the rules. Sweetener is still doing good numbers world wide. Breathin was still growing on all metrics when Thank U Next came out.

You could even argue that it was called "Sweetener” because it was always going to be seen as a precursor to something bigger. Like here’s a taste, more to come shortly.

Labels do not rush out other projects, within weeks, by one artist if they're disappointed with their sales. That is just not how it works. She proved her viability with Sweetener and was able to take a risk.

I agree with the majority in this thread who are talking sense.

Well she was supposed to release the TUN album last year originally, which is the opposite of your argument since its been "delayed" but i agree with your point otherwise

You know you’ve made it when you generate 8 pages of discussion on TUN and her album in the iTunes thread.

Nope. It was rumoured. Nothing was officially stated except for Ariana saying "hopefully before the end of the year", I believe.

I think people are forgetting about something big, the death of her ex and then the split of her fiance. The album was heavily influenced by Manchester, moving on from Mac and finding love again with Pete. She stopped all promo for it to deal with her personal life. She said she started recording the new material as therapy and to have some fun with friends, if I remember right she also alluded to no longer wanting to sing about what was on Sweetener.

Breathin was doing well and growing at the time she stopped promo and started recording new material. In fact part of the reason her label haven't allowed her to put out the new album yet is because Sweetener is still selling well, last week it was #13 in the US and now #18. They still want to milk some more sales out of that before allowing her to move on.

I’m assuming this was used/performed on TV last night somewhere. But anyway YES *.*

Lizzo currently at 41 too and Calum Scott at 49!

Yes they do look at Rihanna's Music of the sun started off well but the 2nd single underperformed and it was a bad album with no more hit potential. They rushed out a 2nd album with more pop/dance leaning songs and A girl like me was released less than 8 months after Music of the sun. It essentially saved her career.

Whilst I dont think Ariana's career needs saving moving on from Sweetener was defo a wise move given its quality and sales.
