from the chart perspective, Thursday was the worst night to do the TV show,

definitely Fri/Sat would have been better

I know the aim was to raise $$$ not to be #1 but sure they also had that in mind too

and a race for #1 also generates more publicity and more sales and more money

There's obviously no way to tell for sure but I really doubt there would have been many people who purchased the Live Lounge song straight away who wouldn't have instead just pre-ordered if its release was delayed 12 hours ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe if it was just put up at midnight without a pre-order being put up it could have lost some sales from people with very short attention spans but even then I don't think that'd be a huge issue.

You'd be surprised! Part of my teams work on digital traffic and the drop off rate is enormous if something isn't available at the time they want it. Especially if that audience is a casual one that you're trying to target.

Even for a charity release though? The point of downloading this is surely to aid the charity rather than to have the song.

Yep, the trajectory of people would still tail off. Maybe not quite as high as there is an additional driver but people tend to drift away unless there is a strong personal gain from doing the action, especially if they're not the type of person who would routinely visit the iTunes store.

(although potentially it wouldn't actually be a bad thing as their driver would be supporting the charity and they may just donate instead if they couldn't access the song)

They definitely should introduce another rule change this July. ACR isn't having the desired effect and that's no direct blame on the OCC (this time). A rule of this magnitude was always going to need tweaking during its lifetime.

ACR...

I think a switch on a Sunday rather than a Friday would be interesting.

And I would prefer maybe 10+ weeks (in say a rolling last 100 weeks) in top 40 as one type of trigger, rather than weeks since release date.

Sorry if I've already missed this, but why are so many Greatest Hits collections charting this week?!

Streams count towards both the original host album and one Greatest Hits album if applicable, Therefore, most streams of popular songs from yesteryear will count towards a Greatest Hits set. That means that albums like Abba Gold are in or near the top forty almost permanently. A lack of new releases and pitifully low real sales at the moment both mean that Greatest Hits sets reach a higher chart position on roughly the same "sales" as the ones they have been getting for months. Some of those sales figures are boosted by an apparent increase in people streaming their favourite old songs while confined to home.

I’m guessing it’s to do with people streaming them and the lack of actual new releases.

And low sales as well often provide unpredictable charts in the albums!

Thank you both! That makes sense. I've been listening to more Michael Jackson then usual, so I'm probably responsible for some of that!

Maybe people are just relieved they released a song with a pulse again after their last couple?

(I've not heard it yet but I've read that it's another very 80s-y song which have been doing pretty well in the charts this year so it probably fits in quite nicely)

Yes the 1975's song is actually quite good, I still don't like the singers voice but the producion is good. There are lots of 80s influenced songs in the charts at the moment, not just Blinding Lights, Physical, Break Up Song and now If You're Too Shy but also Halsey's You Should Be Sad is very 80s rock ballad sounding imo with the dramatic production and Doja Cat Say So is quite early 80s disco/funk.

The Weekend did very low figures today on Spotify, 125K relative to last week, so not sure if he'll avoid ACR at this rate

Finally some social media activity for ‘Times Like These’ - Dermot Kennedy has said on insta that the song has a chance to get to #1 and is encouraging downloads etc., he’s also posted his solo version of the song.
The Official Charts Midweek Sales Flash is in, and The Weeknd has moved clear of Live Lounge Allstars in the race for the singles summit.

Blinding Lights could be set for its third stint at No.1, moving 42,271 units compared to the 36,052 sales recorded by charity track Times Like These (BBC Radio 1 Stay At Home). Saint Jhn is a non-mover at No.3 with Roses (33,557 sales), with the Top 5 completed by Drake's Toosie Slide (4-4, 28,987 sales) and Physical (6-5, 23,724 sales) by Dua Lipa.

Elsewhere, there are new entries for Houdini at No.9 (19,914 sales) by KSI ft. Swarmz & Tion Wayne, The 1975 with If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know) at No.11 with sales of 19,337, and The Scotts (18,159 sales) by Travis Scott & Kid Cudi at No.13.

Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia is on course to return to the top of the albums chart, advancing 3-1 after selling a further 7,176 copies, ahead of Lewis Capaldi's Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent (4,927 sales) at No.2. Last week's No.1 The Bonny by Gerry Cinnamon falls to No.3 with sales of 4,208 and What Kinda Music (4,173 sales) by Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes is the highest new entry at No.4.

Fine Line (2,984 sales) holds stead at No.5, with Trivium's What The Dead Men Say (2,887 sales) straight in at No.6.
