In terms of the supermarket thing, how are you all doing it these days?

I use one hand to shop with and sanitise it before I get my wallet out, sanitise my bag and the top things in it before I leave, and then wipe down all my groceries when I get in before putting them away.

I'm starting to get the sense that if it's spreading in supermarkets it's because people aren't being careful enough?

I don't think it's spreading in supermarkets, at least if it is, it is the exception rather than the norm.

I just go shopping and go about my normal business. I have noticed a few of the bigger supermarkets are re-inforcing queing and numbers again, so perhaps they got the heads up ready for when their sales go through the roof for the next couple of weeks!

Israel got a full lockdown the other day for a couple of weeks due to the New Year holidays. Tel-Aviv is already empty~
They don’t have a clue what they’re doing but it’s so hard to listen to them going on about ramping up fines when they all rallied round Cummings back in May.

If there is another lockdown I’ve decided that I will continue to see my family if I’m still expected to go into work. I will simply not refrain from seeing my loved ones if I’m still forced to spend all day with up to 150 children when I don’t know where they’ve been, who they’ve seen or what they’ve been doing. I followed the rules last time even though I live alone but if it’s ok for me to go into work, it’s ok to see my family.

Exactly the government want to have it both ways a restricted economy which continues to function and slowing the virus but it can’t be done imo!

Scotland’s restrictions are a weird one. You can’t go round to someone’s house but you can meet them inside a pub or restaurant. Surely that will just make pubs and restaurants busier. Anybody would think that’s what the Scottish government want.

It could be a consequence of where guidelines aren't being followed and where contaminations are occurring (= once in each other's houses and no longer in public). Similarly, many countries are closing bars and restaurants mid-evening as when people get drunk later at night, social distancing is adhered to less and less. Then there's Ireland's strategy of more restrictions on bars that serve only drink - classed as 'wet' - compared to food-serving restaurant-pubs, classed as 'dry'. Yes, there's a risk of spreading COVID wherever you go, but an equally crowded room is more risky if it's in private than if it were in public.

I find the cynicism about governments protecting the economy a little tiring because 1) the economy does need protecting and 2) even if pubs etc. have few restrictions, footfall is much lower and they need financial help anyway.

I'll be honest, I'm utterly broken up by this announcement. Clearer once again evidence that this government literally doesn't give a shit about anyone but homeowners who fit the nice socially prescribed model. They are roleplaying at being leaders, not actually leading.
I appreciated Nicola vowing to make sure all NHS services are properly up and running as that's a concern of mine (my mum for example has a blood pressure condition that can be serious if not treated and she's had her appointments delayed five months). Presuming we can meet in people's gardens (can we lol) the restrictions aren't too bad I guess? Tryna remain optimistic  but I have a feeling it won't be lifted by Christmas :')

It says it's for the next six months doesn't it? I don't know about Scotland though.

So facemasks COMPULSORY in all retail from Thursday. Will shop security and workers enforce this? What if people take them off as soon as they get inside which I've seen them do?

Fine doubled to £2000 for not wearing one.

I disagree, having pubs closing by 10 is probably the right thing to do. It will detour more from going out (especially with Universities returning) to drink at home. The problem is with pubs outside of London, Track & Trace is just not operated efficently and there is naff all social distancing in many pubs with queues of people. It won't cut the infection rate, but I think it will have an effect.

Those against the pubs closing at 10 say it'll just make people drink quicker and buy more before 10pm. Same people will still go out, just maybe a bit earlier.

I know, but what would they rather, pubs shutting at 10 or pubs not open at all? I honestly think it is people being over dramatic. I think it will have only a small effect anyway, but it will detour some people from going out and allow businesses to operate thus reducing contact for people. It's inevitable if the infection rate gets much higher then they will stop contact with other households. I suspect that was what Whitty/Vallance suggested, but rightly for now the English Government have gone against it.

Guarantee you now, in 4-6 weeks there will be a ban on households meeting then from Christmas Day - Boxing Day they will reduce the rules and then possibly allow small gatherings on NYE and NYD as "reward in good faith".

I’m so pissed off and I don’t even know what Wales is doing yet. Everyone being told to work from home but I can still mix with all their offspring.

Good. I'm honestly sick to death of the anti-mask brigade acting like they can do as they like and treat retail staff with the serious levels of disrespect they have been.

At my work it's been more a case of 'you need to put these posters out stating it's mandatory for everybody to wear a mask', that's turned into 'ok we can't enforce it just put up with it' because of the backlash. I really wish we were able to just turn these people away, tell them to wear a mask, and if they don't comply they can go and bank elsewhere. It's ridiculous and disgusting that in the UK customer service takes precedence over the lives of both staff and other customers.

It's a good idea I am all for it, but shop workers understandably don't want to act as police on top of their possibly already stressful role in these times. It will therefore fall to security as you say but of course some smaller shops may not have security staff.

Indeed, retail staff understandably don't want to invite a security risk to themselves or the shop by arguing with customers.

I'd happily stand and tell a customer to leave and call the police if they refuse to wear a mask or leave. And I'd happily take the time to close their account if they became abusive or didn't comply. Sure, there are other things I could be doing instead, but expecting us just to ignore the situation, exposing us to the risks of the virus because people we're interacting with can't be bothered or are too stubborn to wear a face covering is not it. The bullshit needs to stop for the sake of 'omg i'm the customer my feelings were hurt because u asked me to wear a mask'.

What about people like me who are medically exempt but have forgotten their GP letter that day? They may have mental health problems that makes them forgetful but they need to do urgent banking. If you don't allow them in will you waive any additional charges to their account if they can't deposit some money to bring it in to credit? This is a potential minefield. If a chemist does similar, refuses someone in to get their prescribed drugs that they urgently need can they be sued if they die without them?

Slight tangent but I still can’t get my head around you wishing to police other people’s mask use (see earlier posts) when you’re almost smug about your own exemption.

I am not smug at all. It is simply a fact that I have panic attacks and it's a risk to wear one. Why not answer my question about your bank? Would I get a charge?

I'm not talking about vulnerable groups though? I'm talking about the twats that clearly have no health problems and refuse to wear a mask because it's all a conspiracy and it doesn't affect them or anybody they know, etc. It's pretty easy to distinguish between those that are exempt and those that just can't be arsed / don't want to wear a mask anyway. Generally the former will be polite and happy to explain they're exempt. The latter will be confrontational, angry and stroppy.
Just listening to 5 Live and a caller says someone with a lot of spare money should test the Scottish rules in court as how can it be right that you can go to a pub with friends but not have them to your home for a drink? I agree, it contradicts itself and Sturgeon should have seen this.
