Now borders can be closed, as you have seen, supply chains disrupted massive economic damage on top of the massive economy damage from the pandemic, more lost jobs... Absolute LUNACY that Brexshit puritans demanded brexshit in the year of a pandemic, when ALL POLLS showed a CLEAR AND MASSIVE - not 51% lol - majority in favour of delaying it!!!

LOL. None of us knew when we voted that Brexit would come about and a pandemic at the same time. The only poll that mattered, after which May triggered A50, was a leave win. Stop clutching at straws. We're off-topic by the way and you started it.

OMG panic buying's started. Supermarket shelves reported to be emptying very quickly today. Once again, loo rolls, flour, yeast, sugar, bread, canned beans, veg, fresh meat and fish.

Started just after 8 last night. Supermarkets say they have a lot of everything and more deliveries now so no need to panic buy at all. Will take my chances when we need something. Fully stocked right now.

OMG where's that Panic Buying thread? Can a mod reopen it?

LOL. I doubt any of us will admit to buying 100 loo rolls or 80 cans of beans today. :o

It was obvious it would happen at the start but whether it continues is anyone's guess.

I doubt that there is widespread panic buying. Simply that there are pockets of it, amplified and broadcast by those media outlets desperate for clickbait and the useful idiots that end up re-posting about it on forums to drive others into panic buying.

In the first lockdown I just used our local Co-Op and went at quiet hours- there was always stock, there were no queues and no need to panic at all.

It's hard to know what time to go TBH. If you go at 7am you'll probably queue in the cold to get in. Go at 5pm and what you want may be sold out. Found I can only get single pints of semi-skimmed milk in Asda in the morning. All gone later and we don't use much. Tesco have stopped doing single pints altogether since last March. They'd rather use the spaces for more 2 and 4 pints.

The new case/death figures are out, not going to quote them here, but looking at worldometer website the figures are pretty much the worst in the UK of anywhere in the world. The US of course has higher figures but when you take population into account the UK is almost certainly doing worse at the minute, which I find a bit strange because restrictions have been less in the US than in the UK in general of course.

I mean Italy is bad at the minute in terms of daily covid deaths but the case numbers are going down.

Critical Incident at Lincoln Hospital

Source: BBC News

A critical incident was declared at Lincoln County Hospital on Monday night "due to the large number of patients requiring admission".

The hospitals deputy chief executive Mark Brassington said the trust currently had 198 Covid patients.

He said: "The number of inpatients who have been confirmed as having Covid-19 across our sites remains higher than in wave one and we remain extremely busy across our wards and intensive care units.

"Our position is compounded by challenges with staffing due to a lack of availability of colleagues due to a number of factors."

He added that the public could help by following government guidelines to reduce the spread of the virus.

My cousin came out of a Sheffield hospital after a long 18 hour shift, with overtime, as a Covid nurse on Saturday to be jostled and swore at by a group, men and women, young and old, saying she should stop being a sheep as Covid doesn't existPolice were there but just watched. She asked why she should be spokeN to like that and they say they have free speech and it's up to the NHS Trust if they want them removed from their land. They weren't committing a breach of the peace. They should move them all, stupid idiots. Happening at a lot of hospitals now as workers leave their shifts.

Heaps of positivity came out of my first day with the children today. We had 4 key worker children in and then a staggering 24 access my live lessons online - so in total I was able to teach 3 lessons to all children in my class except for 3!

We have now set up rotas too whereby some days I will deliver these lessons from home and some from school to reduce numbers of adults in school.

Also not a good look for the government to boast about how we've vaccinated more people than rest of Europe combined yet we are in the worst position!

The UK is doing worst because the government is utterly incompetent AND made up of poshos completely isolated from normal peoples existence. It's not rocket science.

Hardly any of the UK rules OR exceptions have been fit for purpose to get public buy-in & support, UNLESS you happen to be a homeowner who can easily WFH with your own support network right there.

For example. Single person households alone being allowed support bubbles. That's immediately a class/wealth-based health aid. Anyone who can't afford to live alone or independently in a free-standing building is denied ANY human connection. Utterly unrealistic it would be abided by by a nation of mostly renters, house-sharers, lodgers and subletters.

There seems to be an increasing amount of anger with these idiots on social media. It's bad enough having an incompetent government without dunderheads like this spreading disinformation.

I hate to use the whole Trumpism, but we ARE testing more than most parts of the world. It's a good borometer, but you also have to take in to consideration some of Western Europe locked down in December whereas we had come out of a lockdown. I think when you look at the US (and along with Brazil etc.) is the cases hit a peak number and then they kinda plateau out in terms of daily infections.

Worst part of that press conference was Witty suggesting we may even need some restrictions for Winter 2021/2022..

You've lost me here, surely if you can't afford to live alone then by default you'll be living with someone else (more than likely at home with parents) and therefore have a human connection? Or am I completely reading this wrong?

The numbers themselves are bad, but they are not the whole story. The positivity rate is now at the same level in London in the community than it was when we were *only* testing in hospitals back in the spring. The ONS data estimates that 1 in 50 have Coronavirus currenty (1 in 30 in London) - that far exceeds any previous maxima - approximately 2% of the population or 1 million in England alone.

lots of people livein e.g. bedsits or shared accommodation where they live in e.g. a studio multiple studios to a floor and those don't count as single person household.

People living like that or in any kind of flatmate/with stranger/live-in landlord/sublet/lodging/work-provided accommodation like an au pair have been left high + dry by those rules. & aren't able to have a bubble. Or the likes of e.g. assisted living.

In my view would have been better to blanket let every household have one bubble. Bc if you aren't allowed to see anyone ever, people are imo more likely to throw it out the window & see multiple friends/fam IF they feel at the end of their tether.

With respect the idea that everyone either lives 1) alone 2) with happy family 3) with friendly flatmates/friends or 4) with just their partner is exactly the kind of shortsighted view that the gov has taken & misses out people by.

Yes, even taking into account the UK does more testing than other countries, it's still doing far worse when you look at figures like the above.

I'm just really hoping the vaccination effort works well enough that by late spring/early summer we'll be able to go back to some sort of normal with more vaccinations over summer in preparation for winter 2021/2022.

It looks like my question as to why they can't get the vaccines out quicker might have been partially answered - it's partly due to a shortage of GLASS VIALS of all things.

People have talked about the whole Blitz Spirit when the lockdowns started, yet it's beggars belief that we haven't put everything in to ensuring the vaccines are rolled out 24/7 as soon as we get them. We've only vaccinated 1 million to date, yet in England 2 million a week will need to be vaccinated in order to meet the target of getting all over 70s vaccinated by mid-February. There isn't the sense of urgency that I would expect in sorted out the one thing that's needed to get things back to near-normality.
