The JCVI has already confirmed yesterday that they're continuing to recommend AZ for 30 and over: https://publichealthmatters.blog.gov.uk/202...zeneca-vaccine/

Local GP surgeries in Birmingham and pushing ahead with giving AZ to people in their 30s. I know a number of people getting it this weekend as they've already done a lot of the 40s on a local level here.

Surely the concern here is we seem to be pileing through the lower ages and not with great speed in the numbers that the Government reports. Suggests to me, lots of people are choosing not to take the vaccine under 50. The numbers are just not there.

That's because a lot of under 50s have already been vaccinated due to being vulnerable. There are ~26 million people over the age of 50 in the UK, but almost 34.5 million people have had their first doses. So, assuming all 26 million over 50s have had their first dose at least, almost 10 million under 50s have likely already recieved their first dose.

Just got my 1st vaccine. Got the AstraZenica one. I’ve got a massive craving for Battenberg, but I’ve been assured that it’s not one of the side-effects of the vaccine.
They always say with the AZ that the side effects are worse in the first dose than the second dose

In spite of Saturday being a public holiday in Germany (Germany takes public holidays v seriously and everything shuts down) we did 1.3m doses from Fri through to Sun. Up from 1.19m the week before - impressive given the holiday.

Berlin has moved onto Priority 3 and I at long last (P2) have been able to book in! I get my first dose of Moderna 3 weeks today and then the second dose 9 weeks today.

Just need Sturgeon to remove hotel quarantine from vaccinated folks now and then I can book to come home 🥳

Absolutely ridiculous and completely unjustified! They didn't do the same to us when the UK was full of COVID-19 back in the winter.

In other, somewhat better news - an informative thread on herd immunity here and how we *should* approach it towards the end of June.

Australian border policy has always been far more lenient towards white countries. As much as I love Australia, to say that it’s a wee bit racist is like saying Boris has a wee problem with the truth or america has a wee problem with gun

Fantastic news on the heard immunity threshold but slightly concerned that this is all about after *1* dose. Reality is that it will be much much later as full immunity only kicks in with 2 doses and pretending otherwise harms the uptake of the second dose

Sounds like a tier system like last summer will more likely make a return in late summer then rather than anything serious enough to warrant another lockdown...this is an optimistic analysis and I hope its true.

However I still think the pace of easing of lockdown is too fast of course, I fear that we will have some sort of moderately sized spike in Covid deaths in a month or so's time.

I honestly wouldn't worry too much Snake. Even the Government pessimists have changed their tune. International Travel is still a bit dodge, but at least we have a better system in place compared to last summer. The EU states are really pushing it, whereas we seem to be airing on the side of caution ever so slightly although it really does seem as though we're in a bit of a rock and a hard place.

It's really hard to press more caution when we're averaging roughly 2,000 cases a day and the majority of the vulnerable are vaccinated. I don't think the next stage of re-opening will have that big an effect in terms of case numbers either.

Yeah given we're at the same levels as last Summer and this time round over half the country has been vaccinated, I really can't see what could cause another surge that would even risk overwhelming the NHS.

The above could indeed be amazing.

On another positive...Got my first AZ dose today!! Reykjavík got some extras so they sent out randomized appoinments this morning and I got lucky.

Firmly in favour of an IP Waiver. My biggest issue is that it is now like a year overdue and waiving the IP won't fix the issue we have right now because of the lead in times.

Moderna a while back apparently said they wouldn't enforce the IP during the pandemic, but I am not sure how viable it is for generic producers to suddenly spring up and start making the mRNA ones given its a new highly advanced tech. Think it would be very tough to do, which is why Moderna has said that. It gets a PR win with the knowledge no one will probably take their IP anyway.

Think the likely candidates are AZ, Sputink, Sinovac, Sinopharm, and Novavax. Thats a lot of potential vaccines and with IP waivers and then mRNA contributions to COVAX we could really start to make waves in the global south. I hope this happens because we are all at risk until the whole world is vaccinated.

What fresh right wing hell is this: https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/...-the-move-legal

Imagine getting five years imprisonment for simply flying to your home country

Its a really difficult situation though, protecting the public (especially those from ethnic minorities who are more likely to die from covid) from a variant that weakens the vaccine vs being accused of being racist and perhaps breaching human rights (the right for those born in India to return to their country and/or see family members. I would be inclined to want to protect the public to be honest. Though 5 years imprisonment is an excessive sentence I think.

Although on top of what I said before, I am aware as you say that Australia does have a general problem with racism so that's what makes their five years imprisonment decision seem more racist in that context.

Yeah, ‘perhaps’.

Yeah, ‘perhaps’.

I edited my post before you responded, as I didn't like the weakness and indecisiveness of the word 'perhaps' in my last post either

The Independent is reporting that the remaining 30-39 age group will be offered an alternative to AZ in addition to under 30s with an announcement to be made tomorrow. The UK should still have enough Pfizer & Moderna supply to reach its target of end of July for all adults having a first dose.

For those who are interested in the maths the latest yellow card data was out today - there have been 242 confirmed rare blood clot cases whilst 22.6m first doses & 5.9m second doses of AZ have been administered in the UK.

(Notice how they've waited until after polling day 👀)

Given that everyone of my age seems to have taken bad reactions to the first dose of the AZ vaccine, I'm not surprised they're changing the guidance to over 40s for it. I'll still be getting a 2nd dose of it at the end of June.

I’ve my second dose in for Tuesday week and had no reaction to the first dose.
