Matt Goodwin is the Reform candidate.

He is a right-wing loon even by Reform standards. Reform claim to be upholding democracy. Here is a list of the people who had a vote in the selection of a byelection candidate.

Farage, N

That looks remarkably like the list of voters who chose the leader of the party in Scotland. A search of membership lists in Gorton and Denton and in Scotland found no members called Farage, N.

Horrible person!

Been reading about Gorton/Denton, you have people really convinced it'll be a real battle, I'm not so sure. Even Denton, the white, working-class area of the seat, doesn't have a history of voting much for Reform or antecedent parties, they didn't stand a candidate here at the last locals. Certainly Greens and WPB going full throttle to dislodge Labour could see Reform come through without a split vote, but if Runcorn was only narrowly lost, this might be an easier Labour hold?

Of course if they do lose it to Reform it's an apocalyptic sign, which might make them fight harder.

The Candidates for the Gorton and Denton by-election have been announced -

  • Nick Buckley (Advance UK)

  • Charlotte Cadden (Conservative Party)

  • Dan Clarke (Libertarian Party)

  • Matt Goodwin (Reform UK)

  • Sebastian Moore (Social Democratic Party)

  • Joseph O'Meachair (Rejoin EU Party)

  • Jackie Pearcey (Liberal Democrats)

  • Hannah Spencer (Green Party)

  • Angeliki Stogia (Labour Party)

  • Sir Oink a Lot (The Official Monster Raving Loony Party)

  • Hugo Wils (Communist League)

Literally something for everyone there, with commies, social democrats, libertarians and continuity FBPE thrown in to the mix.

My predictions - Labour won't win this. They already dropped points when Andy Burnham wasn't selected, and now with the Mandelson stuff thrown in I can't see them taking it. I feel the Greens have been oversold by media wanting a straight Green/Reform fight, they'll poll better than 2024 but nowhere near winning. At the moment, my money's on a tight Reform win.

Looking at that candidate list it looks like a comfortable win for the Greens in my opinion.

Quiet on here about Gorton and Denton but the campaign has been very interesting (and at times worrying) to follow over the last few weeks. Voting is going on, we'll know the result by tomorrow morning.

Seems to have turned into a dead heat 3 horse race. In that Labour, Green and Reform are probably going to each have ~10,000 votes with one of them having 11,000 and winning, each setting up an entirely different narrative for the next phase of British politics, but I could not tell you with any certainty which of those will have the winning vote number, even though I like to go against perceived wisdom in election predictions a fair bit.

seriously, if you go on social media it seems like campaigners from all 3 parties are flooding the constituency - the last time I remember a by-election getting anywhere near this much coverage was Batley & Spen and I think this outstrips that.

I’d thought that Labour would have no chance until Keir Starmer went to the constituency this week to campaign. If he’d thought that Labour were toast here he would’ve stayed a million miles away from it, so he must have some good data for his party on early postal voting. Of course if they lose now then he’s even more tainted.

I’m still thinking a slight Reform win, but I think Labour will be second, rather than the Greens.

Weren't Labour forecast to be completely battered a few weeks ago?

It probably shows the Labour vote is not disappearing as much as you would hear, but they are not necessary bleeding votes to Reform or the Greens. Even if Labour lose the seat (which I think they will to the Greens) I'm not sure how much this tells us really. Reform has esentially morphed in the 2019-2023 Tories and their extreme fringe seem have got bored of them now. I think this tells us we're in a bit of a mess, but plenty of time for everyone to get their act together on a national level.

Ideally, I would like to see Labour winning the seat with the Greens second. Of course, the broadcasters would still be far more interested in hearing what Farage has to say than anyone else.

It has been reported that Reform have had a lot of people outside polling stations talking to voters on their way to vote. This is illegal.

Really nervous for the results of this, I don't think I can bear the thought of Reform taking it. Least of all because their arrogance will be off the scale.

It’s be a huge surprise if reform won imo, it’s not in their top 100 targets (same for the Greens) and there’s only really one half of the seat that they can do well in as one half is urban and diverse. The urban diverse Labour side of the seat also has twice as big a population so will likely see a left leaning party win the seat.

Hope the Greens can pull this off after Starmer trying to smear them at PMQs on Wednesday saying they are the party of making it legal to take crack cocaine with no irony at all after all that’s happened in the past 2 months!

Sky News quoting a credible ‘Labour source’ stating they believe they have lost the seat and the blame game has started already…

"Early signs at the count indicate the Greens have been able to turn out support in a way they wouldn't be able to replicate at a general election," Labour sources tell the PA news agency.

salty bitches

Looking forward to the result, let's hope it is an emphatic win for Hannah.

Easily coming home for the Greens, I've just woken up but no doubt about the result, Reform were late in the game trying claims about the legitimacy of the election because of course they were, and the Greens now have a clear record of making inroads in Labour safe seats where the might not even have been expected to go before.

Makes my (and possibly many many others) chances of giving a vote to a Green candidate that much more likely in the future.

It’s good to see.

I was expecting to wake up to a narrow Reform victory. So it’s good to see the Greens take it with ease in the end!

Relieved to have not woken up to a Reform win. A pretty emphatic Green victory in the end too…

What a result 💚

Amazing news to wake up to! The party I have supported all my adult life finally getting moments like this outside of Brighton!

(Side note, my claim to fame of going to uni with Zack will become more of a claim to fame!)
