Fantastic understated dance tune, a surprising but wonderful number 1.

This would also be the runner up for me.

    I loved it… then I hated it… now we’re on speaking terms

Oh it should be subjective, much more interesting to see how you rank them rather than list what you think other people may want to see ☺️

Love is All Around is okay for what it is, but not something I’d ever seek out - same evaluation I’d give the other mammoth film soundtrack hits from the first half of the 90s. I wouldn’t rank it last

I didn’t like this one at the time… because I was a huge Erasure stan and hated everything that was higher than Always as I had hoped that would debut at #1 😂

But I do now like it, it would definitely be top 5 for me. And I’m delighted to see that we share the same favourite for 1994, great track

Baby D are singer Dorothy Galdez + the guys from the House Crew. "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" was originally released in 1992 on the Production House label. Production House started as house label founded by former Galaxy members Phil Fearon, Laurie Jago and Raj Malkani in 1987. Production House developed into one of the most famous and profilic UK hardcore label in the early 1990's. The House Crew were main part of the early 90's cast of Production House and produced banger after banger including "All We Wanna Do Is Dance", "Keep The Fires Burning", "We Are Hardcore" and "The Theme". In 1992 they released under the moniker Baby D "Let Me Be Your Fantasy". It became one of the biggest underground dance hits in 1992, but took two more years for topping the UK charts thanks to the re-release on Systematic Records, a sublabel of London Records. "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" combines the wonderful vocals of Dorothy Galdez with uplifting breakbeats. The lyrics itself are also very good and carry the vibe very nice:

I'll take you up to the highest heights

Let's spread our wings and fly away

Surround you with love that's pure delight

Release your spirit and set you free

Come and feel my energy

Let's be as one, soul and mind

I'll fill your world with ecstasy

Touch all your dreams deep down inside

Let me be your fantasy

The perfect dance song and a well-deserced #1 of this countdown. I have heard it first at the end of 1992 in th Steve Mason Experience on BFBS Radio and was initially blown away by it. It is worth to check out further versions of this wonderful song:

  • Ruffer Mix (a bit more underground version than the original version from the initial release in 1992)

  • Dancing Divaz Remix (an uplifting house remix from the hit version in 1994)

  • Rank1 Remix (the uplifting trance treatmeant by the "Airwave" creators Rank1)

One of the most wonderful songs of all time!

'The Real Thing' has great production, I like the progressive house/techno vibes.

'Let Me Be Your Fantasy' is also a good emotive dance tune.

Two fantastic dance records to round out your countdown, great choices!

Thanks for your hard work @DaTilt , I really enjoyed reading and commenting!

  1. Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy

  2. Tony Di Bart; The Joy Brothers - The Real Thing

  3. D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

  4. Stiltskin - Inside

  5. Whigfield - Saturday Night

  6. Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In the World

  7. Doop - Doop

  8. Take That - Everything Changes

  9. Pato Banton & Reggae Revolution - Baby Come Back

  10. Mariah Carey - Without You

  11. Take That - Sure

  12. Manchester United Football Squad - Come On You Reds

  13. Chaka Demus & Pliers;Jack Radics - Twist And Shout

  14. East 17 - Stay Another Day

  15. Wet Wet Wet - Love is All Around

That's a great No.1, brilliant 90s dance song indeed.

It's a shame so few of the 90s dance classics actually made it all the way to the top. I've never been quite as enthused by The Real Thing but it's nice that such an unlikely artist got to No.1 (and that this happened quite fairly regularly in the 90s).

Going with this as my rank:

  1. Whigfield - Saturday Night

  2. East 17 - Stay Another Day

  3. Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy

  4. Take That - Everything Changes

  5. Wet Wet Wet - Love is All Around

  6. Doop - Doop

  7. Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In the World

  8. Tony Di Bart - The Real Thing

  9. Pato Banton & Reggae Revolution - Baby Come Back

  10. D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

  11. Mariah Carey - Without You

  12. Chaka Demus & Pliers, Jack Radics - Twist And Shout

  13. Stiltskin - Inside

  14. Take That - Sure

  15. Manchester United Football Squad - Come On You Reds

It's only the top three I really love though, the record buying public got it wrong this year! The No.2s list deserved everything the No.1s list got.

Thanks for doing this @DaTilt - a fun countdown with great reviews, and lots of remix suggestions for me to check!

I approve of your top 3! Unsurprisingly I don't have the same New Labour gripes as others as I was born in the year they took to power. I do vividly recall it being played on a speaker when Rishi Sunak called that General Election while standing in the rain though, lol.

'The Real Thing' is fabulous <3 the version I'm most familiar with and love (Joy Brothers Dance Mix that you also highlighted) is only the second most streamed version on Spotify though, behind a version that's just labelled as 'Radio Edit'.

'Let Me Be Your Fantasy' is one of my mum's favourite songs (taste) so it was a staple growing up; I soon ended up loving it myself. On the subject of remixes - I own the song on CD single and approve of just how many banging ones are included on there, as well as the timeless original.

Thank you DaTilt for a highly enjoyable countdown! I think my own top 10 would look like this:

01 Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy

02 Toni Di Bart - The Real Thing

03 Whigfield - Saturday Night

04 Stiltskin - Inside

05 East 17 - Stay Another Day

06 D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

07 Doop - Doop

08 Take That - Everything Changes

09 Wet Wet Wet - Love is All Around

10 Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

Great choice of number 1, I think that would be my favourite too and it was great to see a rare instance of rave/hardcore make number 1. The Real Thing's OK, but not one that sticks in my mind much, there were much better 90s dance songs. D:Ream is pretty cliched (I wasn't around for the first New Labour use, but did experience it's revival in the last election which...feels a long time ago now oops x), but it's quite fun and always very singalong and uplifting.

Thanks for running this, I think this would be my top 10 roughly (scraping the barrel a bit after the top 5 whoops x):

  1. Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy

  2. Doop - Doop

  3. East 17 - Stay Another Day

  4. Whigfield - Saturday Night

  5. D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

  6. Wet Wet Wet - Love is All Around

  7. Tony Di Bart - The Real Thing

  8. Take That - Everything Changes

  9. Stiltskin - Inside

  10. Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

Thanks for taking us through the 1994 number 1s, DaTilt.

I think my top 5 would be:

1. D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

2. Stiltskin - Inside

3. East 17 - Stay Another Day

4. Doop - Doop

5. Whigfield - Saturday Night

It was a poor year for number 1 singles so I'm not giving a position to anything else.

Amazing number 1 of course - would be mine too. I’ll do my rate later in the week, but great thread, thanks!

Good rundown Da Tilt, well done, and good top 2, I probably wouldnt have placed them at the top at the time with D:Ream, East 17, Stiltskin getting a bit more love then, but these days those are the 2 I most enjoy hearing again, never over-played and under-appreciated on oldies radio.

Here’s my list

  1. Whigfield - Saturday Night

  2. Take That - Everything Changes

  3. Doop - Doop

  4. East 17 - Stay Another Day

  5. Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy

  6. Stiltskin - Inside

  7. Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In the World

  8. Tony Di Bart - The Real Thing

  9. D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

  10. Pato Banton & Reggae Revolution - Baby Come Back

  11. Mariah Carey - Without You

  12. Wet Wet Wet - Love is All Around

  13. Chaka Demus & Pliers, Jack Radics - Twist And Shout

  14. Take That - Sure

  15. Manchester United Football Squad - Come On You Reds

Fab number one to finish up with. Just an utter euphoric dance classic <3

1 Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy

2 East 17 - Stay Another Day

3 Whigfield - Saturday Night

4 D:Ream - Things Can Only Get Better

5 Wet Wet Wet - Love is All Around

6 Prince - The Most Beautiful Girl In the World

7 Take That - Everything Changes

8 Pato Banton & Reggae Revolution - Baby Come Back

9 Doop - Doop

10 Stiltskin - Inside

(11 Mariah Carey - Without You)

and cba to do the rest as don't like them.

Thanks for running this Da Tilt.

Great top 2 - I really liked 'The Real Thing' at the time, and although it's dropped off my radar over time, it's held up really well on the times I have relistened to it, the blissful dance production and soulful vocals. 'Let Me Be Your Fantasy' is a brilliant one to top this list which I still listen to regularly, and a fine exponent of where dance was in the mid-90s - it would be #2 for me behind only Whigfield, with Tony Di Bart and East 17 taking #3 and #4. Thanks for the countdown Till!
