1 The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber - STAY (easily my song of the decade, not remotely close)

2 Harry Styles - As It Was

3 Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved (loved this before it was a hit so I enjoyed watching it blow up)

4 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You (this never really wore on me actually)

5 Post Malone & Swae Lee - Sunflower

6 Ed Sheeran - Perfect (think I liked this more than Sunflower at the time but this one has worn on me, and I never liked it as much as some other Ed ballads e.g. Thinking Out Loud)

7 The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

8 The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather

9 Drake feat. Wizkid & Kyla - One Dance (one of Drake's better songs to give it credit)

10 The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk - Starboy (never liked this one much)

I actually just groaned looking at this list, what a depressing ranking 😂 01 As It Was 02 Blinding Lights 03 One Dance 04 STAY 05 Someone You Loved 06 Sunflower 07 Starboy 08 Shape Of You 09 Sweater

  • Mr Brightside is as #37 according to the list I used (believe it is Spotify only data). It's also all time, as Coldplay's Yellow is at #13. Interestingly the highest placed song from the 20th century

  • Christmas songs get basically nothing outside of 2 months each year so not surprised to see none of them high.

I struggle to see Shape Of You as top class at all and that’s not just a slight towards Ed Sheeran but it really was him at his most “jump on a trend for obvious success” at a time when he was already at the peak of his popularity. I’ve always thought it sounds like a lazy version of Cheap Thrills with pretty poor faux-inspiring lyricism and a phoned in vocal.

I think “Starboy” has only got better over time and I’d rather hear it than “Blinding Lights” so I put that 1st. “Sunflower” would complete my top 3.

“Perfect” for worst: have never enjoyed that, though I do have a soft spot for “Thinking Out Loud”.

1 Starboy

2 Blinding Lights

3 Sunflower

'One Dance' has really grown on me over the years! A few years back it would have probably been about 6 in this list!

It’s quite a mediocre list :/ none of them are awful but they’re also all nothing special 😭

  1. Starboy - one of the weeknds best imo, it’s aged very well and still a banger.

  2. Shape of You - I can’t believe I’m putting this here but I actually really like it after not hearing it for ages, such an earworm

  3. As it was - I also can’t believe I’m putting this here as I was quite a hater but after not hearing it for a while I’ve come to appreciate it for what it is!

  4. Sunflower - such a tune, need post to go back to this and stop the country shtick

  5. Blinding Lights - it’s a classic

  6. Someone you loved - a solid ballad but it’s not Lewis’ best at all

  7. Sweater Weather - still odd to see this be so well streamed. It’s again solid but not amazing.

  8. Stay - unlike some of the others above I’ve liked this less and less overtime. I think the chorus is a bit too grating

  9. One dance - it’s ok, I’ll enjoy it when it comes on in the club or at a party but that’s about it

  10. Perfect - somehow this has aged worse than shape of you. So corny 😭

1 The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

4 Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved

5 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You

6 The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber - STAY

9 Ed Sheeran - Perfect

10 Post Malone & Swae Lee - Sunflower

I think for me it's being that much of an effortless earworm while being such a simple song. Seeing it live was great too as the whole thing could be quite easily recereated with his loop pedal, it's essentially a very simple backing track loop but I find it quite hypnotic to listen to, especially as it builds and layers towards the end.

Obviously it did rip off the production of Cheap Thrills (and I guess No Scrubs in the melody as they had to be credited, although I didn't even pick up on that at all at the time), but there is just something about it I have never got bored of.

I think he's said in interviews he was expecting Castle On The Hill to be the bigger hit and was surprised this took off more than that. I suspect he was hedging his bets just in case one wasn't liked, going with both a classic Ed kind of song and a song that fit the charts of the time. Of course both were gigantic in the end, but it was his heyday and he could have released anything. However the fact they both hung around so long and led to the album smashing records and causing a whole change to the chart rules is testament to the quality of the two songs imo. I still love that album.

1 - Harry Styles - As It Was

2 - The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber - STAY

3 - The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

4 - Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You

5 - The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather

6 - The Weeknd Ft Daft Punk - Starboy

7 - Post Malone & Swae Lee - Sunflower

8 - Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved

9 - 8 Drake Ft Wizkid & Kyla - One Dance

10 - Ed Sheeran - Perfect

Not the greatest of lists... I'd only choose to listen to the top 3!

01 The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

02 Harry Styles - As It Was
03 The Weeknd - Starboy (feat. Daft Punk)

04 The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber - STAY

05 Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved

06 The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather

07 Post Malone & Swae Lee - Sunflower

08 Drake - One Dance (feat. WizKid & Kyla)

09 Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You

10 Ed Sheeran - Perfect

Ed Sheeran can sometimes be good when he wants to be, but I can't stand listening to either of those - especially that abomination I've placed 10th puke

#01 | The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

#02 | The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk - Starboy

#03 | Harry Styles - As It Was

#04 | Post Malone & Swae Lee - Sunflower

#05 | Drake feat. WizKid & Kyla - One Dance

#06 | The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber - STAY

#07 | The Neighbourhood - Sweater Weather

#08 | Ed Sheeran - Perfect

#09 | Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You

#10 | Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved

Great:

1) Sweater Weather (10/10)

2) Starboy (10/10)

3) STAY (10/10)

4) Blinding Lights (10/10)

5) As It Was (9/10)

Good:

6) Sunflower (8/10)

Meh:

7) Shape Of You (5/10)

8) One Dance (4/10) (Do You Mind SAVES it)

Bad:

9) Perfect (3/10)

Terrible:

10) Someone You Loved (1/10)

Listen to a lot:

Shape of You

Listen to sometimes:

Starboy

One Dance

Listen to rarely:

Blinding Lights

Sweater Weather

Don't dislike, but wouldn't listen to:

Sunflower

Perfect

Find quite annoying but I feel like I should like it:

STAY

Never want to listen to:

As It Was

Someone You Loved

I was really torn between voting for As It Was or Someone You Loved and wish I voted for As It Was now as nobody else did. I don't know why I don't like As It Was at all as it sounds like Blinding Lights (and Take On Me, etc.), but I just can't listen to it.

At the time I was 99% certain that he was trying to copy The Weeknd's situation where Can't Feel My Face took off very quickly and the less mainstream The Hills was more of a slow burner, even though they were released close together. I think Ed was expecting Castle On the Hill to probably climb to #1 after Shape of You. But Shape of You was bigger than expected and Castle on the Hill (at least in the UK), was big right out the gate instead of being a song slowly climbing the charts so that plan didn't really work out.

Thinking back to how we met, I wonder if there are other reasons why you hate that song 😜

Blinding Lights is by far my favourite, but the top half are all good.

01 Blinding Lights

02 As It Was

03 Starboy

04 Shape Of You

05 Sweater Weather

06 One Dance

07 Someone You Loved

08 STAY

09 Sunflower

10 Perfect

The lack of female representation (besides Kyla) is striking.

  1. Starboy - the one 10/10 for me. Was obsessed with it when it came out and still love it now.

  2. Sunflower - my second favourite Post song after Circles. 9/10

  3. Blinding Lights - a great song but not even the best song on its own album #justiceforInYourEyes 8/10

  4. Shape Of You - still very catchy 8/10

  5. Someone You Loved - the better of the two slow/ballad songs on the list 7.5/10

  6. Perfect - Beyoncé duet benefited this 7/10

  7. As It Was - never understood the hype for this but I do like it. 6/10

  8. One Dance - has aged well and like it more than I did on release 6/10

  9. Sweater Weather - so low purely because it is the only one i can’t recall without listening to it. Not bad, but not very memorable. I understand this the USA’s Mr Brightside as the song that never leaves the Spotify chart, so imagine this would be much lower if just UK. 4/10

  10. Stay - can’t stand The Kid Laroi’s voice and the shouting which spoils this for me. Production is the only saving grace but not enough to give this more than a 3/10.
